Summary
“Kate, baby, I can’t have you doin’ that.”
“Doin’ what?” Kate shouted over the howl of the wind whipping her hair in her face.
Tyler sighed and adjusted one white-knuckled hand on the steering wheel while the other gripped the loose passenger harness strap. “You know exactly what you’re doin’.”
“There’s only two of us in this truck, and you’re driving,” she pointed out sensibly, her voice almost lost in the wind as the top half of her body hung out the passenger side window. “What would you have me do?”

Summary
When Jeb and Kate first said ‘I love you’, it was young and sweet and everything you’d expect from two naive college students. Just two kids absolutely thrilled to find someone who understood. Kate was even the first to say it, her voice full of youthful enthusiasm, having no fear of the feelings exploding out of her chest or voicing them out loud.
Then the worst happened. And suddenly, her life was smaller, and her heart was shattered.
And then, to her surprise, someone picked up the pieces.

Summary
She fell too fast. She fell too hard too fast. This was what she got for being so egregiously out of practice, for years hiding out in her apartment like a nun or a monk or some other religious figure that knew better than to fall head over heels in love with their brand-new, fresh-out-of-the-box boyfriend after three weeks of dating.
She hadn’t even taken the cellophane off yet. Metaphorically speaking.
------------
Kate and Tyler say "I love you". Two ways it could have happened.

Summary
“Mom didn’t look mad, did she?” Kate asked from the passenger seat.
“Nah,” Tyler said, one hand on the steering wheel and the other intertwined with hers on the center console. “I think she just expects it at this point. Anyway, I already promised her we’d stay at least five miles away on the west side of the storm line.”
She groaned. “Tyler!”
He didn’t even chance a glance at her, his eyes locked on the upcoming frontage road. “I can’t have my mother-in-law mad at me on *Day 1*, Kate. Not happening."
