James returns from weeks at sea to news that Ruby is expecting their first child. Soon after, a storm brings the Black Pearl back to Port Royal, carrying Jack Sparrow, his crew, and Captain Teague. Then, after an encounter with Captain Teague, James receives word that his own father, Admiral Lawrence Norrington, is on his way to Port Royal as well. While he's on the brink of fatherhood, James has to face his own father and the reasons for their complicated relationship. Reasons which, of course, involve Captain Teague.

Summary
Set after Curse of the Black Pearl, but pretty much disregards the events of the sequels. James Norrington and Jack Sparrow are natural adversaries but find themselves with a common enemy: Cutler Beckett. They are helped along the way by a woman named Ruby, a reoccurring original character, also an unlikely ally. After uniting against Beckett, time and time again, the Commodore and the pirate go from reluctant allies to reluctant friends.

‘James Norrington, do you fear death?’ came the dreaded question, but as James raised his head to look Jones in the eye, he realised he felt no fear, only defiance.
No, James Norrington did not fear death – never had, if he was being honest, at least not since Elizabeth had ripped out his heart and he had sailed hundreds of men to their untimely deaths in that godforsaken hurricane. Perhaps he had even hoped for it, then – longed for it, death being the merciful bliss, the freedom that had never been bestowed upon him in life.
But he hadn’t died then. And he felt like he couldn’t die now, either. Not out of fear, but as one last act of defiance towards Jones, Beckett, and all the people that had tried to control him in his life. And suddenly, faced with the two radical options Jones had given him, he realised that there was a third one, and he chose to act upon it.
