The sun breaches the horizon at the exact moment the clouds shift to cover it. The result is a haze of dim cast over the park, pulling the threads in Mu Qing’s throat. The glint in Hua Cheng’s eye vanishes along with the light.
It’s awful.
“Then don’t.” Hua Cheng unclenches his fist and sets his hand on Mu Qing’s knee, so gentle he barely feels it. “You’re not treading water. This is your life. You’re fucking swimming in it, okay? It’s the fucking ocean.” His hand tightens, nails digging into Mu Qing. “You want to go somewhere else? Fine, I’ll take you somewhere else, wherever the hell you want to go. Wherever the fuck, I love you, nowhere is too —”
“You’re joking.” Mu Qing can’t help but say it. It’s his heart, jumping in his chest. His skin, prickling and uncomfortable. His throat, closing.
