Ye Baiyi had a plan. After washing his hands of Wen Kexing and Zhou Zishu, he was going to swing by the mountain to see if those two idiots succeeded in opening the treasury then go from town to town, eating and drinking his fill (he is never full) until his long awaited death grasped his old, ornery heart and freed him from this prison. Simple, foolproof.
But instead of sitting in a warm restaurant and drinking it dry, he’s holed up inside a shabby safehouse on the side of the mountain with a trembling, wounded scorpion who seems determined to die.
Ye Baiyi allows himself a long suffering sigh. He’s earned the right.

Zhou Zishu takes to checking on Chengling even on the nights when she’s too restless to join her in their room, moving on silent feet to stand outside the closed curtains and listen. It’s almost a relief, one night, to hear quiet sobs. Good.
Let her be a child, and not a weapon.
By all rights, it should be Wen Kexing that Chengling turns to for comfort. They’ve invaded her house, and she’s decided to cluck over them instead of turning them out. During those first few days, Zhou Zishu had thought maybe she had stumbled on someone just as strange as she was—but now Wen Kexing has found out Chengling’s favorite foods, and apparently tells her bedtime stories. Zhou Zishu thinks that if Chengling didn’t hold the power the Five Lakes Alliance has been waiting for, she could happily place Chengling in Wen Kexing’s care. She could leave.
