Summary

Summary
The village of Blackthorn Hill had always lived in some strange limbo with the King of the Beasts and his Darkwoods. He and his subjects never bothered them. Well - unless a hunting trip went too far, and certainly not excluding the reckless actions of the occasional prideful teen. The peace between them was tentative, and unofficial, but it worked.
But that was until the owl came, spat out its parchment on the long table held by the village elders. With its feathers, threadbare and black as grime, its broken, hooked beak, and its bloodshot, rolling eyes, they needn’t guess twice where it had come from.

Remus, a poor farm boy with a furry little secret is rejected from his village, gifted to the King of the Beasts as an offering, a mate. He looks and acts as savage as they say, but Remus soon learns that there is much more to it, much more beneath the rough black fur and blood-soaked snarl.

“Bilbo said it belonged to an elven prince long ago,” Legolas sighed. He was certain he was flushed bright red as Gimli’s beard– he felt as if he were being set on fire from the inside.
“Yes, he did say that.” Frodo’s brows pressed together, now with confusion. “Am I supposed to know the names of all elven princes from ages past?”
“No,” Legolas said slowly. “But, I, ah, suppose on your journey you have met… one.”

Pippin turned to Gandalf, caught by this new idea. “Can you make me into a hobbit-sized weasel?”
“For mercy's sake,” said Gandalf.
In which Pippin has approximately sixty uninterrupted leagues to find out everything that can be found out from Gandalf and gets approximately sixty times more than he bargained for.

Thorin isn't sure exactly when that point is, but he knows that it's probably some time before the person in question saves your life. On the far side of the Misty Mountains, Thorin realizes that he never quite caught the first part of Mr. Baggins' name, and he finds that it's astonishingly harder to learn than he would have thought. Fili, Kili, and Dwalin are no help whatsoever.
