This, the clothes, and the meticulous checking of every nook and cranny is anxiety, her neuroticism coming up through the floorboards while she’s trying to move into this new house that is her body.
His hand splays open palmed against her belly, the other following her arm until he can wind his fingers with hers, bringing her hand to his mouth to kiss. “I can multitask.”

“His name was Tim.” Dick said. “And when he was your age, he looked just like you. You know, my buddy Tim was teaching himself ASL because sometimes he found it hard to talk. Is he the one who taught you to use it?”
There was no reaction at all this time, the boy once again completely silent. Even his breaths were unnaturally quiet, as if he had been trained not to ever make a sound.
“I haven’t seen Tim for a long time.” Dick said. “Years, to be honest. I saw him at Gala’s mostly, and I remember we hid beneath the punch table, gorging ourselves on sweets. Do you like candy, Bud?”
Dick wasn’t sure if the kid had ever had candy in his whole life, his muscles were nearly non existent and he weighed enough to be blown away from the wind. Given how his arm was still bleeding, Dick was honestly getting a little worried that his body wouldn’t be able to tolerate it for much longer.
