To my readers; I love y’all.

Work Text:

“Wow, your quirk is so cool, Tokoyami!!”

He felt his face- well, bird face- go red. Could he even turn red? Well, if Fumikage could blush, he would’ve.

Thank god he has a bird head.

“Ah; thank you, Midoriya,” He managed to get out, still suffering from the butterflies in his stomach.

‘Oh god, I’m so fucked,’ Fumikage thinks to himself.
Out of the corner of his eye (He’s currently staring at the floor) he sees Midoriya smile and turn and talk to Uraraka.

He can feel her cold stare directed at him.

Does she seriously think he’s a threat?

Thankfully, it lingers for only a second as her attention is captivated by Midoriya.

After school, Fumikage walks home. The sun is setting. He allows Dark Shadow to take form in his regular shadow.

“Someone has a crush!” He sings, extremely giddy. Fumikage tenses up and feels his stomach go wild again.

“Dark Shadow, I swear-”

“Nah, nah, your secret’s safe with me, bud,” Dark Shadow disappears as swiftly as he came. Fumikage can’t help but feel that this is not a good thing.

All throughout class the next day, Dark Shadow is sneakily traveling through the other students’ shadows, getting closer and closer to Midoriya until-
Fumikage senses Aizawa-Sensei’s glare and tries with all his might to put Dark Shadow away. After a beat, it submits and Fumikage almost sighs aloud with relief. Aizawa-Sensei’s eyes narrow, and he turns his back to the blackboard, continuing on with his lecture.

The bell rings, and his voice is cut and clear.
“Tokoyami, a moment, if you will,”

Fumikage can hear some of the other students’ laughter and giddy talk as they leave the classroom.
Leaving poor Fumikage behind.
If the boy with a beak would’ve looked, he would’ve seen Midoriya worriedly look back at
him and bite his lip nervously.
The door shuts and Aizawa swiftly turns around, radiating an aura of no-bullshit and serious business.
Fumikage gulps nervously, despite not even being guilty of anything.

“I won’t cut to the chase. What the hell was Dark Shadow doing out?”

Fumikage is doing all he can not to hyperventilate or flinch. “My greatest apologies, Sir. I can’t say that I was exactly aware that he was active… Nor do I know his intentions. Sometimes, when he’s really determined, I…”

Aizawa glares. “He is your quirk, Tokoyami. I expect you have complete control over him at all times,” He sighs, apparently tired out from the lecture. “Get out of my sight,” He grumbles.

Fumikage hesitates, then bows. “Again, I’m sorry, Sir,” He walks out quickly, ashamed.

As Fumikage walks down the echoing school hallway, he hears Dark Shadow grumble.
‘I am Not a dog. I am an individual!’

‘Then start acting like one,” Fumikage snarks back, still shaken from Aizawa’s scolding.

A couple months pass. The students get dorms. That means no long walks home, and no large amounts of freedom for Dark Shadow.
It’s late one night, and Fumikage is doing all he can to try and fall asleep. But…

‘Why don’t you talk to him more? Why can’t you soothe that feeling inside your stomach, Fumikage?’

“Stop,” Fumikage grumbles, too tired to mentally scold Dark Shadow.

‘Stop being such a wimp, Fumi!’
Is… Dark Shadow laughing? Is he out? He’s too loud to be in his head-

Fumikage gets up and vomits into the trash can.
He hugs himself and tries his best to keep it together, but then he hears it.

A soft knock on his door.

“Tokoyami…? Are you okay? I thought I heard you-”

He hurls again, this time more violently and ends up with him coughing and sputtering. Midoriya opens the door and runs to his side.
“Tokoyami! Are- are you okay?”

He coughs. “I- yeah, it might be due to my quirk-”
The laughing returns. Tokoyami and Midoriya freeze.
Tokoyami frowns and with all the strength he can summon, forces Dark Shadow to return to the depths of his mind.

“...Tokoyami? Was that-”

“Dark Shadow, yes,” Tokoyami grins weakly. “He tends to get wild during the early morning. This, uh, usually never happens,” He wipes his beak on his sleeve.
“Thanks for checking on me, Midoriya. I appreciate it.”
‘Please stay,’ He thinks, almost desperately.

“Ah, it’s no problem, really!” Midoriya gets up and smiles. Fumikage’s heart feels like it’s going to burst. “Call if you need anything, okay?”

“T.. thanks. Goodnight,” he says weakly, and if Midoriya notices it, he doesn’t comment.
‘Godammit. You’re too good,’
Fumikage closes his eyes and clutches his stomach.
‘You’re too good, Izuku Midoriya,’
