Chapter Text

Wade looked at himself in the mirror rather critically. Maybe he should have worn something a little more traditional, but he happened to think that the fitted baby blue button up looked nice. [It matches our eyes.](*Bats eyelashes*) Maybe it would remind Peter of a nice spring day and he’d be even happier for his present. His jeans were a regular old pair, fitting perfectly, but a little worn in the thighs and at the knees. He had his beat up red Converse on, but if he was lucky, Peter wouldn’t be looking at his feet. He’d be so blown away by Wade’s thoughtfulness that he’d be working to get him out of his clothes as quickly as possible. (You’re really reaching, ya know that?)

Wade grumbled a bit. “What’s wrong with being confident?” [What’s wrong with bein- what’s wrong with bein-] (Demi is a babe.) Damn boxes. He’d been dealing with them every single day, non stop, since that time Peter showed off his powers in town. (I still wish we could have convinced him to have our babies.) [This is not an mpreg story] (PHYSICS BE DAMNED!) Nowadays, they only ever seemed to shut up when he was smiling at Peter or making him happy. Even with the small reprieves, Wade sometimes didn’t know how he managed to deal with them for the decades that he has. Thinking back, he probably hadn’t had a day where they were completely absent since his move in day. [We should start a reverse AA count. Days since last break in insanity: 885 days.] (Is that including today?)

He ran his fingers through his hair one more time, making sure it was attractively mussed before he turned to the present. (Damn, I’m glad this is a Pretty Wade fic. I always miss the hair.) [There are some good Scarred Wade with Hair fics, but it’s just not the same.] The First. Hopefully he didn’t need the whole list of things that Bucky and him had planned out, [Ha, we can go over gift lists with Steve at the next book club.] (I bet he’d have great ideas.) but he had it if he did. A big bouquet of flowers was on the table, Calla lilies, the same pale peach shade of Peter’s skin, pink Oriental lilies that matched Peter’s lips, and a single red rose. He took it in hand and made his way out of the apartment.

The first few steps were spent pressed against the wall, as there was a rectangle of sunlight on the floor and he didn’t feel like showing up to Peter’s place smelling like barbecue. (Maybe he’d like it. Parfum de Wade brûlé.) Once he was safely around it, though, he walked with confidence to Peter’s door, rapping at the wood. It opened and Wade smiled widely at the gorgeous man on the other side. “Hello, Peter. These are for you.”

He tried to hand him the bouquet, but Peter stepped back into the apartment, keeping his hands behind him. “Um, no thank you.”

“Are you sure? I bought them just for you.” This was not going how he expected it to. He was expecting a little more kissing, a little less watery eyes. Oh - “Oh, shit. Are you crying?” (Way to fucking go, asshole.)

Peter sniffed. “They’re dying, Wade.” Just as a tear dropped out of his eyes, Peter shut the door in his face.

(Well, I could have told you that would happen.) [Well why didn’t you??]

Wade stood there for a moment, just staring. What the hell had just happened? Why wouldn’t he like the flowers? They were pretty! Finally, he stomped over to Bucky’s door, pounding on it until the man opened up. “Your stupid Operation: What Would Bucky Do fucking sucks.”

Bucky blinked at him for a moment, then his eyes shifted to the giant bouquet. “Seriously, Wade? You gave a fae dying flowers?” He reached out and smacked him in the back of the head. “Trash ‘em. We’re heading out.”

He stalked into the apartment and tossed the flowers toward the trash, not caring much when they bounced off the side and dropped some petals on the ground before dropping inside. “Where are we going?” He yelled it toward Bucky’s bedroom, where his friend had disappeared to probably get dressed. [Missed POV opportunities.] (Mmm, nakey Buckykins. Me like.)

“Garden Center.” Bucky stepped out and patted his pockets, making sure he had his wallet, keys, and phone. “You’re going to grow him a flower, and keep it alive for a while, before you give it to him.”

[That sounds like a lot of lovey dovey work…] (Peter’s ass is worth it.)

Wade whined, but he followed his friend out of the building, stealing his blanket off the couch to throw over himself. Inside Bucky’s car, he buckled himself up, hissing when the blanket slipped and sunlight hit the back of his hand, instantly starting to bubble and boil. He rearranged the blanket so he was properly covered again. A small smile stretched his lips when Bucky reached into the backseat and dropped a sombrero on his head to shield his face better. [Best friend goals] “Thanks, darling.”

“Yeah.” Bucky growled at him. It didn’t stop Wade from knowing his friend cared about him. Why else would he keep the sombrero in his otherwise pristine car? [Cinco De Mayo?] “I can’t believe you’re such a dumbass. You know the guy grows plants. Grows them, Wade. Why the fuck would you think you should give him cut flowers?”

“I thought they were pretty!” [Pretty as a corpse lying in a-] Wade shook his head and glared out the window. (I refuse to take part in a necrophilia fic.)

Bucky just growled at him, and they spent the rest of the drive grumbling at each other. Bucky would say something insulting, Wade would whine at him and then insult him back. By the time they were parking and walking into the store, they were both laughing. “So, we’re buying flowers?”

You’re buying flowers, I’m just here to make sure you don’t consolidate your stupidity from earlier.” Bucky flagged down a nice looking woman. “Hi, my friend here needs to apologize for hurting his fae crush’s feelings.”

“Hey!” Wade glared at him, though he saw the woman chuckle before she covered it up with a small cough. So maybe he wasn’t as intimidating as he could be when he was wearing a black and grey plaid blanket and a giant red and brown sombrero. Sue him. (That would actually maybe be worth it. How much is he worth?)

“How exactly did you hurt their feelings?” She was trying to be polite. When Wade mumbled out his answer, she bent her head a little closer to him. “I didn’t hear that.”

Wade sighed. “I bought him a bouquet of flowers.” He got defensive all over again when her face went blank. Clearly, she was trying not to call him a dumbass. (She’s at work, she can’t be honest.) [She’s a fucking florist. She’d never make any sales otherwise.]

Finally, she nodded. “Alright, so this is going to take skill to make up.” [Looks like the big guy’s screwed.]

“If you want to impress him, you’ll want to start with a seed or a bulb, not a seedling. It’s less impressive if you’re not making it grow yourself.” She walked them toward that section. “I’m assuming you’ll be doing your gardening at night? Will someone be able to help you set it up in the sun?” Bucky raised his hand and she smiled at him. (Bucky is the Light of our Life.) [Him and Petey will give us sun sickness from the inside out.] (Hopefully less lethal, though.) [Speak for yourself.] (Ooo hashtag edgy.) [Hashtag trigger warning?]

“Okay. So, nothing grows too quickly from a seed or a bulb, unless you have gardening magic, which I assume you don’t.” Wade shook his head. She showed him different pictures, though he couldn’t quite understand how those beautiful flowers came from weirdly lumpy, bumpy brown things. When they left, Wade had a very large brown pot, organic soil, and a handful of pre-chilled bumpy bulbs that he was promised would grow into Prinses Irene tulips. This better be worth it.
