"I think it's three cups of flour to one cup of sugar." Annette told him as she whisked the heavy cream.
"Did you add sugar to that?" Townes asked her in turn.
She slapped a hand to her forehand. "No!"
He chuckled. "Relax, we need to bake the cake before we can frost it anyway."
She reached to open the bag of flour and it tore down the middle, sending a cloud of white powder into the air.
"Oh my god, I am so sorry!" She exclaimed. It looked like a light snow had passed through. At least she had her apron on and flour didn't stain.
"Are you always this nervous?" He asked, shaking the stuff out of his hair.
"I just want it to be perfect." She replied. "I don't think Beth has ever had a birthday cake before."
"I'm sure she'll love it." He told her, still smiling.
She sighed. "We're a mess, you and I."
"That's half the fun of baking." He explained, reaching out a hand to help uncover her brown locks once more.
Annette smiled back and let the tension fall out of her shoulders. Townes had this easy going reassurance about him that was infectious. If he said everything would be okay, she could believe him.
A few hours and failed attempts later, they had a product they could be proud of. It might not have been perfect but it was made with fondness and whipped cream frosting. Like Townes predicted, Beth had indeed been overjoyed at the gesture.
