Chapter Text
Namjoon met Yoongi when he was almost 4 years old.
It was his first day at the day care and if he was being completly honest, he'd much rather stay at home. Before this him and his mom would spend all day together and the thought of leaving her for a whole 5 hours (that was as much as counting a whole hand!) didn't sound all that appealing.
But his parents had said that it was important that he'd spend more time with kids his age, so he had bit his tongue and swallowed all of his complaints, because if they thought it would be a good thing it couldn't really be all that bad, right?
That didn't change the queasy feeling in his tummy though. Afterall, even though he was supposed to play with the others, that didn't really change the fact that he didn't actually know any of them. So, as his mom had dropped him of with the nice lady, who would be looking after him for the day, he had to try really hard to collect all of the bravery in his heart as he made his way through the big playroom.
It was really loud, everywhere around him kids were running around, playing in small groups and screaming gleefully. It was all a little overwhelming to his senses, so used was he to the slow mornings of drinking tea and juice with the radio in the background playing 80s ballads.
It was in that moment, surrounded by unfamiliarity and overall noise, that he zeroed on a corner in the very back. There, apart from the overall mayhem, sat a boy maybe a year older than him. He sat by himself surrounded by building blocks and was playing around with something that Namjoon couldn't really identify from the distance.
When asked about it later, he wouldn't really be able to say what had made him move that day, though if he was any more religious or spiritual, he might have called a higher power or god or fate. What he did remember though was the clear aura of calmness that seemed to surround the other, so unlike most kids their age.
Before he knew it, he was standing next to the boy who slowly looked up from what Namjoon could now identify as a toy piano, blinking at him with seemingly sleepy eyes.
With no small amount of uncertainty, Namjoon had asked if he could sit with him. (He still remembered clearly how pround he'd been that he didn't stutter even a little when asking the question).
The other had blinked at him before nodding slowly and maybe a little shyly, quickly turning back to his little toy piano. Namjoon didn't mind, he'd found his small corner of quiet, already feeling much calmer than even minutes before.
It would take another hour before he'd learn the older boys name.
('Min Yoongi' The voice had startled Namjoon who had been day-dreaming about drinking tea with a talking tree and a bunny- which is beside the point.
It took him a moment to locate where the voice had come from, his so far rather silent companion, and about the same time to react with a quiet 'huh?'
'I'm Min Yoongi, you can call me Yoongi-hyung' the other, Yoongi, repeated.
'Oh' Namjoon's eyes widened and he felt himself smile 'I'm Namjoon')
And another hour after that for the two of them to actually start talking but when it was time for lunch break, Yoongi actually pulled Namjoon along by his hand to ensure the two of them would sit next to each other and when Namjoon’s mother arrived to pick him up the older one shyly hugged him goodbye. Yoongi also makes him promise that tomorrow they'll play together again.
('I haven't even shown you the coloring books, yet!' the other had said, 'So we absolutely have to spend the day together.
Neither of the kids had seen it, but both the day care worker and Namjoon's mom had exchanged indulgent smiles above their heads, though none of them could predict just how long lasting or strong the bond between the two of them would become)
-
Yoongi had a best friend, Kim Namjoon, who was one year younger than him and attending the second grade, while he himself was in the third grade.
Kim Namjoon had been his best friend for forever and even though they weren't the same age, Yoongi could tell everyone that this didn’t matter, at all. Because Namjoon was the most intelligent person Yoongi had ever met and they could talk about everything with each other like music and HipHop and the cool book Namjoon had found in the library or the weird building Yoongi had seen while driving through the city with his dad. And really, age between best friends is arbitrary anyways, so there!
(He really didn't care what Jaehyun or Mingyu or any of them said, they were just jealous that they didn't have a very best friend!)
Anyways, Kim Namjoon was his best friend and even though they were in different grades, they did attend the same school and so most breaks the two of them could be found in the general vicinity of each other (in other words: practically connected at the hips). At this point, when of their teachers or other friends went to look for them, they'd first head to either of their classrooms and when asking around for one, they'd ask for both of them, because even if they weren't together, they would most definitely know where their other half was.
Yoongi liked that with Namjoon he didn't always have to talk. That, really, neither of them had to talk when they didn't feel like it. At the same time whenever he did feel like he needed to talk about something he could count on Namjoon being there to listen.
Bother of their teachers would often smile at the duo when they found them, heads stuck together above a book or a magazine, or, more often than not secretly sharing the headphones of Yoongi's Walkman (which was against school regulations but most of them tended to turn a blind eye for the cute duo).
Yoongi had a best friend and even though being older than him could be difficult at times he wouldn’t change it for anything in the world.
(What Yoongi didn’t know was that he and his best friends were a regular part of the lunch break gossip at their school. As most teachers were wont to do, theirs also liked to do speculate about their students’ futures and the unbreakable duo made such a compelling subject of discussion.
Hardly anyone thought they’d grow apart (though such things could always happen) and some even speculated that someday, in the far future they’d have their families living closely together, maybe even as neighbors.
On some occasions the young student teachers (along with some of the more open-minded older teachers) would giggle about the possibility of them skipping the ‘finding a family part’ and just being with each other.
Though, as previously mentioned, Yoongi never knew about these discussions, if he had, he probably would have snorted derisively and rolled his. Namjoon, after all, was his BEST FRIEND. Nothing more and nothing less and that’s just the way he likes it.)
