"Okay, let me see if I remember this. 'You have beautiful eyes' is...Tienes hermosos ojos, right?"
The Owl House. And sitting in the living room of the said house were Amity and Luz. Who leaned over and gave Amity a reward smooch on the cheek.
"That's right! See, I told you learning this would be a snap for you. After all, you are pretty smart. Of course, the reward smooches are probably a good incentive."
Indeed they were. While Amity loved the little Spanish pet names she and her smitten language teacher were prone to calling each other, she had decided to expand beyond that and learn more Spanish from Luz.
"Yes, they are quite the incentive. Though even without them, I'm sure I'd ace this."
Luz chuckled at this, grabbing a pen and jotting down another phrase.
"Try this one."
Amity took the paper from her, reading it over.
"Tu gran ego es lindo. Okay, I know one of those words means cute...wait, ego?"
Amity looked up from the paper, giving Luz a slightly annoyed glare.
"It means 'Your big ego is cute'. Stay humble, Mi Bonita Bruja."
Amity rolled her eyes, tossing the paper aside.
"Yes, very funny you...tonta humana? I'm pretty sure that's 'Silly human', isn't it?"
Luz nodded.
"Yes, but no smooch for calling me silly."
Amity chuckled, reading another one of Luz's cards.
"Just think, it'll be like a secret language we can share. No telling what kind of mischief we can get into when we're the only two people on the Isle who speak it..."
As that sentence ended, Amity could see a slight bit of sadness in Luz's face. Thankfully, she was getting better at the whole 'Supportive girlfriend' thing. She quickly scooted closer, taking Luz's chin in her hands and getting her to look up.
"What's wrong, Hermosa? You look down all of a sudden."
Luz quickly shook it off.
"It's nothing. It's just...I miss having conversations in Spanish. Mama always made sure that at least 1 day a week, we spoke only in Spanish to each other for the day. It was our special thing. And being stuck here, I've been missing it. But hey, it can be a special thing with us too!"
Amity patted her on the head.
"There's my happy Luz."
Enjoying the pat on the head, a thought suddenly came to Luz.
"You know, now that I think on it, how come everyone here speaks English? I never stopped to wonder how another dimension has the same language as mine."
Amity stopped and thought for a moment.
"...You know, that's a good question that I wager would drive us both insane if we looked into it. So let's just not think about that."
Luz happily agreed.
"So, what are some of the languages here? I'm teaching you Spanish, maybe you could teach me something you know how to speak."
Well, fair was fair after all.
"Well, I do know Elvish. Mother insists speaking it makes me come off as more dignified or whatever. Which is just beyond untrue. I mean have you ever met an Elf? They are so stuck up and snobby and elitist and..."
Amity had to stop when she remembered that sounded an awful lot like how she was before she met Luz.
"...You know, not important. Alright, I'll teach you a few basic phrases."
Laz sat up, bouncing slightly in excitement.
"Okay, repeat after me. Jren. Haram estin Amity Blight. That's 'Hello, I am Amity Blight'. So if you were to say it..."
Luz happily repeated after her.
"Jren. Haram estin Luz Noceda?"
Amity leaned over and smooched Luz on the cheek.
"Correct. Though you've got a bit of an accent. To be expected from a common..."
She had to stop herself before she called her super sweet girlfriend a 'Commoner'.
"Common...common...commonly person just learning the language. Yeah, that's it."
Thankfully, Luz didn't seem to catch on.
"Let's try something a little tougher. Lesatin foral xem pir tasinaran."
Luz repeated after her.
"Lesatin foral xem pir tasinaran...what's that mean?"
Amity blushed slightly.
"It means 'Your eyes shine like stars'...stop giving me that look. It just came out was all."
Luz blushed as well.
"Aw, you're even a flatterer in Elvish. I think your...foral? Yes, your foral are pretty too."
Amity scratched her cheek.
"You don't have to repeat this one. I just wanted to say...Losatak gev neser kevas ven forton quin. That means...that means 'I'm so happy that I met you'. I'm sitting here with a beautiful, amazing girl and learning a language from another dimension. If you told me I'd be doing this a year ago..."
Before Amity could pour her heart out anymore, Luz stole a for real kiss that cut her off.
"I should get you to speak Elvish more. You sound lovely speaking it, and it apparently makes you sappy. Which means more smooches for me."
Amity slightly chuckled.
"Well, Elves claim their language is one of romance. I guess they aren't totally wrong."
Luz took her hand.
"Well, don't stop now. Serenade me more with that awesome Elvish."
Amity rolled her eyes. It seemed her Spanish lesson was over for the day.
"Vesan Ostol."
Yes, that was Elvish for 'Silly human'.
