Work Text:
The morning sun filtered through the small windows on the left-hand side of the room and Korra groaned, low and annoyed, stuffing her face further into the closest soft mass. She had not complained about Asami, thoughtlessly, calling the left side of the bed when they first moved in. She was not going to be the one to ruin her illusion by bringing up the window and the lack of curtains they had yet to properly attach.
Regardless, she was, rudely, out of her deep and blissful sleep and her big soft mass of something was moving. Concerned only for a quick moment about the personification of her pillow, before she realized she was halfway melded into Asami’s chest as her girlfriend tossed a half hazard arm around her shoulders. Another plus side to the right bedside, sexy boss girlfriend always faces you and thus, cuddles forthcoming.
Korra grinned into the skin of Asami’s chest and took in a deep breath of flimsy pajamas and Asami’s perpetual smell that Korra would probably be able to identify from a mile away now. She groaned slightly and peaked one eye open, slowly craning her head up to peer at Asami’s face, scrunched up in sleep like she was solving a math problem behind the dark of her eyelids. If Korra didn’t know any better, she probably was having some wet dream about … numbers or some shit.
Intending to smooth the crease, Korra wiggled slightly higher and planted a soft kiss between her brows, trailing slowly down to her cheeks, jawline, to her collar bones, and on the soft dip of her chest. Asami stirred and hummed, hand unconsciously tangling in Korra’s hair as she stroked, a habit that apparently was now wired into her even in sleep. Korra was not going to be ungrateful and complain now was she?
Finding her arm in the mess of blankets and skin and clothes, Korra pulled it out and lightly stroked down Asami’s arm peeking out of the top of the blankets. She had such smooth skin it was quite unfair. Not Korra’s fault to want to kiss it every chance she got. She never did pride herself on self-control.
Asami, yet again, tightened her arms around Korra and she lightly chuckled, “Darling, I, unfortunately, do need my lungs for the remainder of my life.”
“Mhmm.”
“Your way with words is one of the things I love most about you.” Korra grinned, planting a kiss on the very tip of her nose. It was adorable in the way it scrunched up as Asami pouted.
“Attitude before 7 am, who do I complain to?” Asami croaked out, voice about a million tones deeper than usual that had Korra wanting her to pin her to the mattress and have her way with Korra to her heart's content.
“Please leave your complaints in the suggestion box on your way out,” Korra whispered into her ear, nibbling slightly on it. Weird? Sexy? Turn on? Didn’t matter. She kissed her everywhere she could.
“Gasp. Kicking me out of my own bed to fend for myself in the cold. All alone.” Asami pouted further as Korra leaned back a little to gauge her reaction. Asami peeked one eye open and looked at her with a sleepy gaze. Ugh, Korra loved this woman so much. She made her chest do weird things. All very cheesy and gag-worthy things.
“It’s a mean world, Asami Sato.” Korra retorted, kissing her one more time on the nose before lying back on the pillow, staring at her girlfriend in a Very Not Creepy Way. She only got to do it for about two seconds before Asami snorted and shoved a hand in her face.
“Stop it, I will poke your eyes out,” Asami said, hand still uncomfortably on Korra’s face as Korra gave it a long lick, smirking as Asami pulled away looking unimpressed.
“Real mature.”
“I was being suffocated.”
“You were staring.”
“I can not be blamed for that,” Korra replied, raising her eyebrows at the image of Asami in front of her. All very perfectly I woke up like this, with her hair fanning in a fashionable bird's nest-esque style around her, and her silky night top really not doing anything much for coverage. Again, who was she to complain, really?
“Poke.” Asami groaned.
“You can’t just say it, babe. That’s like me saying ‘Breakfast Made’.”
“If only you would put even that much effort,” Asami sighed wistfully as Korra let out a strangled gasp, hand on chest and everything.
“Excuse me.”
“You are excused,” Asami deadpanned. An expression that lasted for about three seconds before she giggled and grabbed Korra’s cheeks in her hands and kissed her, very exaggeratedly on the lips. All mushing of skin together, and pulling away to hug her closer, face back in between her boobs.
“We need to stop meeting like this,” Korra said, voice muffled against pale skin and felt Asami’s chuckle vibrate through her body, into Korra’s own. Korra threw a leg over Asami’s and, as a rebuttal, Asami freed one limb to throw over Korra’s. A leg sandwich, one would say.
It was all sleepy bliss and Asami’s soft stroking of Korra’s hair before the worst sound in recent human history rung out through the room.
The alarm on the table beside Asami’s side of the bed.
“Throw it out. Throw the whole house out. We’ll move and have it stop haunting us.” Korra complained as Asami, trying to disturb their position as little as possible, pressed a button and the sound ceased.
“Fuck, it’s Tuesday,” Asami said into Korra’s hair.
“Worst day to be invented. Nothing to look forward to except more days with work.”
“Solid argument, my love.” Asami agreed, planting a kiss on Korra’s forehead and Korra groaned loud.
“Nooooooooo. No, no, no, don’t go.” Asami always kissed her forehead before leaving, the bed, out the door, anytime they had to say goodbye. Korra hated her for having such a sweet gesture followed by something as horrible as separation.
“Unfortunately the entire operation will fall apart without me,” Asami said matter-of-factly. But she didn’t untangle just yet so... It’s the small wins that count, Korra thought.
“No one tells you the dark side of having a successful, sexy, smart, businesswoman girlfriend,” Korra said, pulling her face away and up onto the pillow, throwing an arm over Asami’s shoulders to lock her in.
“Ah, my heart aches for you and your eternal distress.”
“Thank you but sympathy does nothing for filling up bed space. Please don’t leave me,” Korra brought out the wide puppy eyes and kissed all over Asami’s face.
“Having your spit all over me is definitely the way to convince me of all I’m going to be missing, yes,” Asami replied, slightly muffled as Korra kissed her on the lips. She leaned into it and brought the arm thrown over Asami’s shoulder to rest on her cheek instead, stroking lightly with her thumb and letting the kiss linger before pulling away.
“What were you saying about my mouth juice?” Korra replied to which Asami let out a loud laugh in surprise, leaning into the crook of her neck to lightly kiss the skin there before looking back at Korra, eyes more awake now.
“Your mouth juice is the only one of the kind I will make an exception for.”
“Thank you, I made it myself.” Asami laughed again and snuggled Korra closer, tighter than before, then pulling away and beginning to untie Korra’s limbs from hers, and the blanket, and the various clothing items that must have been nesting in the bed, gone unnoticed as they collapsed in it last night.
“See now I’m all cold,” Korra complained, as Asami properly sat up, all limbs successfully out of their traps. Korra held onto her hand, playing with her fingers that were so pretty. She lightly kissed her knuckles and looked up at Asami. “And you’re looking all sexy. Unfair. Unfair. Unfair.”
“Gonna need you to make your peace with it now, Korra,” Asami said, leaning down to kiss her, which Korra thought was slightly contradictory, but, again, who was she to complain?
Asami sneakily snuck her hand out of Korra’s grasp and pulled away. Grinning, triumphant, and kissed her lightly on her exposed bicep before pulling away fully to stand next to the bed.
“You should not be this happy about leaving my bed.”
“Our bed. I own fifty percent of this house.”
“You should not be this happy about leaving our bed. Is there something I should know? Some, gasp, qualms about my bed state?”
“Of course not, darling. Your bed state is as charming as always. Unfortunately, that paycheck at the end of the month is calling to me louder.” Asami replied, picking up a stray pair of pants and, on her way to the closet, passing Korra’s side of the bed and ruffling her hair.
“You look sexy.”
Asami looked over her shoulder from the closet, amused, “Is this how far we have fallen to flirting?”
“I was just voicing my thoughts…” Korra trailed off, crowding the blanket around her shoulders and wiggling to sit against the headboard, watching Asami pick up her phone from the table and then going to filter through the closet for an outfit. Korra loved seeing her get dressed. It was so … intimate to watch someone paint on their appearance for the day, knowing you’re the only one who gets to see them without it.
Or maybe Korra was just in love. Whatever.
Asami hummed appreciatively at some items of clothes and put them on the bed at Korra’s feet and disappeared into the bathroom. Korra stretched out her muscles, arms and legs burning satisfyingly, careful not to crease Asami’s clothes. She would be pissed and Korra would literally eat her own hand than want to be the reason Asami goes to work pissed.
She reached for her phone next to her on the bedside table and tapped through the home screen to play some music before checking her messages. She hummed along with the tune until she heard a loud, “Shit,” from the bathroom.
“They’re in the cupboard under the sink,” Korra shouted back.
“Oh thank fuck for grocery shopping.”
“Well you could thank me with a fuck,” Korra replied, going back to her phone until Asami come out of the bathroom, slightly less smiley than when she went in.
“... I’ll pick up some ice cream on my way back from the shelter tonight.”
“I love you.”
“Now don’t get sappy on me, Sato.” Korra smiled, going on her knees to give her a little kiss before patting her shoulder and sitting back down.
Asami shed out of her pajama shorts into the dark green trousers with the matching jacket on the bed. She clipped on her bra and then held up a light pink and a maroon undershirt up to her chest, “Pink? Maroon? What’re we feeling?”
“I feel like maroon would be too mocking today,” Korra replied.
“Good point, light pink it is.” Asami nodded, slipping the soft-looking top on and going to the dresser next to the closet to put on some makeup. Korra, making a big and loud moment of getting out of bed, came to stand behind Asami and slip her hands under her top to rest on her abdomen.
“I’m going to do mascara so you need to stop that unless your intention is more sinister,” Asami said, but still leaned back slightly into Korra’s hands tracing light circles on her skin.
“And what if they are?” Korra leaned her chin on Asami’s shoulder, looking ahead at the both of them in the mirror. Asami looked back at her in their reflection and then smirked, picking up her phone and opening the camera.
They did make quite the picture with Asami, hair held back with a headband, makeup almost done, and then Korra behind her, soft brown hair poking out, lips on Asami’s neck, tank top revealing arms, with hands disappearing beneath pink fabric.
“You look sexy.” Asami whispered, grinning, kissing her cheekbone, and then going back to her makeup, throwing Korra’s own words back at her.
“You are a wicked woman,” Korra unwounded now skin-warmed hands from under Asami’s shirt and lightly patted her ass as she walked away, hearing Asami snort from the hallway.
Korra started up the coffee machine and grabbed two bowls, filling them up with milk and then digging out brand new cereal boxes from the recently restocked cupboards by yours truly.
Sitting on top of the marble counter, next to the meticulously prepared breakfast, scrolling through her phone as music continued to softly ring out, Korra looked up at hands on her bare thighs.
“Awe, for me?” Asami, a hand on her heart, sat on one of the high chairs, pouring some cereal into the milk.
“I work oh so very hard for my girlfriend,” Korra replied, still on the counter, picking up the cereal box after Asami.
“I have a meeting right at 8:30, but I think they’re going to come with cupcakes as a ‘Please sign this piece of paper, here’s a token on our performative humanity aye’.”
“Do they ask to write that in frosting or…?” Korra raised a brow, shoving another spoonful in her mouth.
“Doesn’t roll off the tongue as nice, now does it?” Asami laughed, “After that, I think Opal needed me to look over something? Bolin said something last week about stopping by, but timing is a little iffy about that one.”
“Oh, how’s that Mega Big Super Secret Project?” Korra asked, eyes wide.
“Well MBSSP is still just that. But we have the final details to hammer out this week before it’s sent off. And then is the long process of building and construction, but I like the team.” Asami lifted the bowl off the counter to sip the rest of her milk.
“I could help in that department,” Korra said, taking their bowls over to the sink.
“Are you sure? It’s going to be a lot of work. Manual labor and all that sweaty stuff.”
“Well these,” Korra flexed her biceps, grinning, “aren’t just for show, darling.”
“Oh, I would know.” Asami grinned back, briefly disappearing into the bedroom, voice rising to be heard, “I’ll talk to the team. I’m sure they wouldn’t mind extra help. And it does help that you’ve done this before.”
“And I was great at it, if my old-age memory serves me correct,” Korra replied, leaving the dishes in the sink and going to lean again the frame of the room, watching Asami make faces at the mirror, applying her lipstick.
Smacking her lips together she turned to Korra, “Mhmm can’t deny that,” she reached forward, squeezing her arms and winking before turning to the room to pick up her bag, shuffling through to make sure she had everything in. Grabbing her jacket off the bed, Asami turned to Korra, smiling with all her teeth, “All clear?”
“Yup,” Korra leaned in to kiss only to have her lips meet palm.
“Don’t even think about it, this meeting is a little important and I’m not going for the ‘just had sex’ look.”
“But it is such a good look on you, though.” Korra retorted, going back to pouring the coffee into a thermos as Asami shuffled into her jacket. Straightening it in the long mirror in the hallway by the kitchen. Korra, one deliciously made coffee in hand, went to hand it to her girlfriend.
“As you’ve requested, my lady,” Korra handed the thermos to Asami, patting her shoulder free of invisible dust. Asami smiled up at her, feet making their way into very anti-feet-looking shoes.
“Oh! Here,” Korra rummaged in the little kitchen drawer, pulling out a painkiller.
“Oh my, you really do love me,” Asami sighed, thankful.
“Who would have thought?” Korra smiled, leaning against the wall by the door, watching Asami pat down her hair, smack her lips together one final time, bag in hand, suit looking perfect. Korra watched, hands crossed over her chest.
“Knock ‘em dead.”
“Not literally. I don’t need a case on my hands now, do I?”
“I would help you with the body, though.”
“I know you would.” Asami shifted her coffee into the hand with the bag and patted Korra’s cheek.
“Okay, you need to go.”
“Oh, how the turns have tabled.” Asami shook her head sadly.
“If you don’t, I might just give you the aforementioned sex look.”
“Fine, fine. leaving.” Korra unlocked the door, watched her step past the threshold, and then turn back.
“The elevator is down to the left, we’ve been through this.”
Asami laughed, rolling her eyes. Shooting her a wink and a dramatic flying kiss, she walked away all click clack-ing in her heels and business look.
Korra sighed in sync with the sound of closing elevator doors and closed her own. Empty apartment and - shit she needed to get out of her pajamas for her own demand-filled day.
———
The sound of the key in the lock echoed through the dark apartment as Asami dropped her arm fulls of things half a step into the entrance. “K-” Her voice croaked and she cleared her throat, trying again, “Korra?” Her voice echoed through empty corridors and she let out a defeated sigh.
Digging her phone out of the back pockets of her pants, she scrolled through the messages, clicking on her chat with Korra.

Asami shook her head, grinning at the picture and quickly saving it to her camera roll. She had peaked at her texts in between meetings and conversations, but she had hoped Korra would be back by now. She had, in fact, had a horrible day and wanted to sob and her girlfriend and shitty reality TV.
Another notification informing her about someone commenting on a picture popped up and she unconsciously clicked on it, prying her shoes off with one hand, maneuvering through the dark hallways of their apartment. The notification opened up Twitter and she grinned a little wider at the picture she’d taken that morning and posted without much thought.
Apparently quick a few more people than her could … appreciate Korra’s morning eyes and biceps.
@koroar
are we sexc or are we sexc
Asami scrolled through her friend’s replies before shutting the phone off and throwing it on the couch, heels scattered on the side, windows letting in street lights, as she collapsed. Exhausted and lonely she reached for the remote stuck in her side because Korra always forgot to put it places it wouldn’t impale a person, and mindlessly scrolled through their recent watches on Netflix. Korra would talk her ear off and probably pout until her lips fell of if she watched any of the shows they were halfway through. Asami put on some baking competition for background noise, let it fill the silence, and then went back to her phone.
9:58 pm
where are you ?!
:(

heart = broken
if that take away is cold once it gets in my hands …
When Korra didn’t reply in the next ten minutes, Asami figured she was probably either on her way or too busy conversing with someone to check her phone. She always found something to say to everyone who said hi to her and it was often what caught her up.
Asami shook her head at the thought, too good for this world. But she would never tell her that. She would never hear the end of it.
Asami regarded her attention back at the show, sitting up long enough to shrug out of her jacket and undo the first button on her pants. She promised herself she would get up and change in five minutes, she just needed to lie down for a while. She watched the screen with bleary eyes and not fully paying attention, and right when she was on the cusp of sleep, a loud thud sounded from outside the apartment door.
Briefly wondering if she should be alarmed and looking for a bat, Asami opened her eyes up completely and tensed her muscles until she heard the lock turning with the key and a “Honey I’m homeeee. Ouch, owww, fu- okay got it. Why is it so dark?” And Asami sat up, legs on the ground, and walked to peer around the bend of the living room to get a glimpse of Korra coming in, four different plastic bags in hand, trying not to move them around too much as she tried to close the door behind her.
Asami bit her lip and walked forward, taking two of the bags carefully from her girlfriend’s struggling person and placing them on the rack by the door.
“Oh you look like hell,” Korra winced, scrunching her nose and kissing Asami’s nose briefly before placing the bags in her own hand next to the ones Asami just took and pushing one end of her shoe with the tip of the other to wiggle out of them. Asami took the bags into the kitchen to put them on the counter before they could suffer any more damage and turned to find Korra following a few steps behind. She turned the hallway light on and one of the three in the kitchen.
“Hungry?” She asked, walking past Asami to go into the bathroom, presumably to change out of her jeans but Asami caught her by the wrist and pulled her back to where she was, leaning her back against the kitchen counter. “Oh-” and she kissed her.
Ugh, fuck, she needed this. She did not have enough time in the morning when she was in a comparatively better mood than now. She cupped Korra’s face in both her hands and, being a little taller than the other girl, she had the pleasure of leaning down and guiding her arms to rest on Korra’s shoulders. Korra grinned against her lips, which Asami hated her for because she loved her a little more every time she did and Asami thought she already loved Korra enough to fill the entirety of the universe. Korra had Asami curving her back, chest pressing against hers as Asami threaded her fingers into her hair and let Korra deepen the kiss further.
Korra had one of her hands on the small of Asami’s back, another rubbing circle on her shoulder blades, down her arms, coming up to cup her jaw and Asami let out a soft sigh into the kiss. Pulling away slightly she gave her another quick, closed lips kiss and opened her eyes.
“Fuck today,” Asami mumbled, watching Korra’s lips, slightly swollen, stretch into a smile as her hands stuffed themselves in the back pockets of Asami’s trousers.
“That bad, huh?” Korra let her lower lip pucker out in an exaggerated frown and Asami leaned forward to lightly bite it before replying.
“I mean, I got everything done. But it wasn’t fun.” She looked at Korra exhaustedly as Korra pulled her closer, hands still in her pockets.
“Oh no, let me gear up and fight the universe on your behalf.” Korra raised her eyebrows suggestively and Asami chuckled kissing her neck.
“Ugh, get changed you smell like dog, I’ll sort this out.” She turned halfway to gesture at the plastic bags on the shelf.
“I’ll have you know that dog was in love with me.”
“I am oh so threatened.”
“You should be.” Korra nipped at her nose again, it was her thing and Asami always chided her on it and it always went nowhere. One day she was going to have perpetual teeth marks on her nose.
Korra unwounded one arm from around her to softly push her by the shoulders to the bedroom, “I will not have you eating burgers in fitted trousers under my roof.”
“But I’m lazy,” Asami whined.
“I will shred them off you.”
“I would think you joke, but the past has proven otherwise.” There had indeed been an incident with heated kisses and Asami’s pair of white trousers being ripped at the side seam.
“You were not complaining back then.” Korra was smirking, she just knew it, “Ugh, what’d you have against light, Sato.”
“Hard to speak when you're sitting on my face, and did you miss the memo. I’m lazy. And tired.”
Korra turned the bedroom lights on as she pushed Asami through the doorway and then walked around her to shrug off her flannel, throwing it on the bed, followed by her pants. Asami sighed as she, yet again, collapsed on the bed, legs bent to touch the floor. Her eyes followed Korra as she walked to the side of the bed in her tank top and underwear to shuffle through some shirts to find one.
“We need to do laundry,” Asami muttered.
“This weekend?” Korra held a shirt up to her nose and shrugged, peeling off her tank top to chuck in place of the shirt on the floor, followed by her bra, and poked her head through the shirt.
“It’s a date.” The shirt was one of Asami’s, so it was naturally slightly longer on her anyways, but Asami had also bought it in the biggest size she could find for maximum comfort and so it came down right above Korra’s knees. She looked like a bright yellow highlighter.
“Romantic. I’ll bring the fabric softener and you bring the detergent.” She threw some articles of clothing Asami’s way, catching her right in the face, and Asami groaned. Legs stretched out and arms going up as she yawned - getting a mouth full of cloth - and stretched to wake herself enough to get up on her feet.
“Help me out here.” She had her arms extended out, opening and closing her hands, and Korra wrapped her hands around her wrists, pulling her up in one fell swoop. “My hero.”
“Did you see the kitten I sent you a picture of?” Asami hummed in an answer and Korra continued, “She got adopted, and ah, it was adorable. They got all these cute things for her, that I helped out pick, I’ll have you know, and I think they’ll treat her good.
“Oh, she’s the one you talked about last week?” Asami’s voice was muffled as she pried her shirt over her head.
“Yup, but she’s all good now.” Korra hummed happily.
“If you're trying to push your pet agenda on me it’s not working.” It was working.
“Whatever, whatever, I mean, I’m not going to force you to get a pet if you don’t want one…” Korra trailed off and Asami looked up from trying to get her other leg out of her pants.
“Expected you to put up more of a fight.”
“Yeah, but then Jinora was telling me all these horror stories today about people who don’t want a child - pet in this instance - getting one and partners forcing things on others and it was really shitty.” Korra’s words started jumbling together as she continued talking and Asami stopped what she was doing to give her all her attention, “So you know …”
“Shut up. You’re too nice.” Asami walked over to her and kissed her on one of the collarbones pocking out from where the shirt was falling off her shoulder, “Let me tell you something.”
“I’m on the edge of my seat.” Asami gave her a look, lightly slapping her arm before continuing.
“How about we come back to this after the construction project is over …” Korra’s eyes widened she opened her mouth and then closed it again. “I mean you’re going to be busy then too, so maybe once the dust settles with all that …”
Korra screeched, picking Asami off the ground and spinning her around. Asami let out a noise of protest and then laughed into the air as Korra put her down, “Music to my fucking ears, Sato.”
“But I am not dealing with any poo-related situations. That will be yours to handle.” Asami held up a finger.
“No problem I deal with shit on the daily.” Korra grinned, kissing Asami on the shoulder before letting another laugh escape. Totally and completely filled to the brim with unfiltered glee. Asami could’ve vomited with all the soft feelings happening in her heart.
She shimmied into her shorts and tank top as Korra practically skipped into the kitchen. Asami chuckled lightly to herself, washing up briefly in the bathroom, shaking her head, and followed behind her. Korra wadded into the living room with the bags of takeout and Asami grabbed some tissues and a ketchup bottle.
“I was going to accuse you of betrayal but is this preparation for my birthday?” Korra looked up from the ground, one of the lights on, enough to make your way around but still have the street lights filtering in. Korra pointedly looked at the TV showing some complex recipe the bakers were following.
“Darling, I’m flattered you give me this much credit but please bring your expectations back down to the ground.” Asami sat down beside her, tangling their legs together and twisting around to grab the remote and drop it in Korra’s lap.
“A girl can dream.” Korra sighed wistfully and laughed when Asami threw a fry at her, catching it between her teeth. “I wanna keep watching though, I think pink over there is going to win. I mean did you see that thing she did with the batter?”
“You mean … mixing it?” Asami raised a brow, looking at her from the corner of her eye as she squirted ketchup onto her burger.
“I’m surprised you know that much.” Korra stuck out her tongue and Asami rolled her eyes, mouth full of delicious unhealthy cuisine.
After a beat of silence, attention directed at the screen, Asami blurted out, “I think Charles is homophobic.”
“The white boy? I think he also has a perpetually bad sunburn.”
“He pissed me off today.” Asami mumbled around her burger, “And my stomach hurts.”
“Well, one thing at a time now. What’d he do?”
“He tried to get your number - because I have a picture on my desk. You remember? The one from the photo booth? With the Lipstick Accident?”
“Ah, good times. It was not my fault it melted on your jeans.”
“Some would argue otherwise. Anyways, when told you were very securely taken and not going anywhere anytime soon-”
“Well—“
“Shut up,” Asami threw another fry, “He said you were too hot to just drop and so, this motherfucker-“
“Language, Sato!”
“Shut up - left me his number for you. I was going to stuff my heel into his dumb face.”
“Violence is never the answer.” Korra shook her head wisely like she was out here spitting grade A advice.
“Very rich coming from miss ‘I punch to show my affection’.”
“Don’t go insulting my personality now.” Korra put her hand on her chest, offended. Asami rolled her eyes and Korra gripped both her cheeks in between her palms, making Asami’s lips pucker out. “Now don’t go worrying your pretty mind about him. I bet he roots for the wrong people in reality shows too.”
“He probably does,” Asami muttered, still being sandwiched between Korra’s hands. Korra shook her head like this was a large felony.
“And he smells like butter,” Asami said.
“Butter doesn’t smell like anything,” Korra replied, releasing her hold to stuff the entire remainder of her burger in her mouth. Asami marveled at the talent.
“Yes, it does. You just haven’t held a stick of it up to your nose long enough.”
“And how long is enough?” Korra said, turning towards Asami and wiping the corner of her mouth with her thumb and then sticking it through her own lips to clear away the sauce.
“It’s just something you know. I can’t assign quantities.” And then Asami hey up a finger, “No-“
“Titties.” And then they stared at each other for a beat before Asami shook her head in disappointment. Finger at her temple.
“On second thought, where is that paper with Charle’s number again now —“
Korra laughed, pulling Asami to her chest and planting a big, fat kiss right on her lips before standing up and going to throw away the empty trash.
“Do you wanna continue the animation or the historical?” Asami called out.
Korra shouted back from the hallway, “I want something funny.”
“Something funny.” Asami hummed under her breath, scrolling through the selection of shows they were in the middle of watching and pulled up a sitcom. She hastily grabbed a tissue and halfheartedly cleaned the table as Korra came back with two ice-cream sticks, running over to Asami.
“Eat it quick, I might have forgotten to remember to perhaps put it in the freezer.” Korra grinned sheepishly and Asami again shook her head but abided. They made themselves comfortable on the couch, ice creams finishing off in half the time but still giving Asami the comfort that was asked of comfort food. Korra ended up with her back to the armrest as Asami snuggled on her side, in between her legs - which she traced patterns on absent-mindedly as Korra twisted and played with dark strands of Asami’s hair.
Every now and then Korra would laugh and her knee would bend as a reflex or her hand would tap at Asami’s arm and Asami would feel it all vibrate through her. All of Korra’s reactions and each breath and Asami hummed, content for the first time since that morning. This is what she missed while she was sat for long hours, back and ass aching as she dealt with stubborn business people.
“Fuck yeah! Let the record show that’s what I would have said if I was given the chance to ask you out first.”
“I would have about fifty more grey hair by then if it was left up to you.” Asami retorted.
“Just saying. The opportunity was stolen from me. And you would be a fine older woman.”
“Stop trying to age me.” Asami slapped at Korra’s thigh, “And it was getting stupid. Someone had to make a move and I took one for the team.”
“Fair enough. What would you have done if I said no only to ask you out the day after?”
“I would not have given you the opportunity to speak to me again as the humiliation would have haunted me.” Asami traced the skin of Korra’s thigh.
“I think I would have found you.”
“False. I’m an architect. I would have built myself an impenetrable mansion of stone.”
“Is that your chosen superpower?” Korra asked, tugging at Asami’s hair that was probably close to resembling tumbled weeds at this point.
“Then you’re the animal whisperer.”
“That’s how I get all the girls.” Korra winked and Asami lifted her head, peered into her eyes, and put the entire expanse of her hand on her face. Smothering her.
“You need to find new moves.” Voice muffled behind the palm, Korra replied. Asami just snorted and grabbed both of Korra’s arms and wrapped them around her own torso. Tangling them together she inched herself lower and got comfortable. She heard Korra chuckle.
“Just go to bed.”
“But you’re here.”
“Well, then I’ll follow you. How mind-blowing of an idea.”
“Shut up,” Asami said sleepily. She felt Korra shift and was moved into a semi-sitting-up position as Korra sat up. “Stoppppp why can’t I rest.”
“Because you will hate me in the morning for letting you fall asleep with mascara on.”
When Asami didn’t reply, Korra laughed in an exactly my point kind of way. Asami staggered up onto drowsy feet and mindlessly turned the TV and lights off as they both crowded down the hallway, descending into routines for bed. Asami was exhausted enough to not bother with makeup remover and just wash her face. In about precisely four and a half minutes she was under the covers, watching half-lidded, in the lamplight as Korra wiggled in next to her. Her feet cold and her mouth smelling of toothpaste.
“Stop moving,” Asami mumbled, putting her hand on Korra’s stomach, stilling her, and then crowding into her space to wrap their legs together.
“How demanding,” Korra replied, but sank into a position now muscle memory, as they sank into the covers.
“Night,” Asami whispered.
In lieu of a reply, Korra pressed her tighter to herself and Asami kissed her forehead. She could make it if this is what she came home to.
