Summary:

summer nights. hot air. perceived differently. thoughts keeping sleep away.

Work Text:

he reached over to the warm body next to him.

you still awake?

mmh...

i just wanted you to know i love you.

i know, love.

the little mumbles brightened his night. the soft breeze stirred his hair, slightly ruffling it and drying the slight film of sweat on his arms. the delicate hairs rising sent a shiver down his spine, the coolness being a welcome change to the built-up warmth.

the grass beneath his hands was long and comfortable, not short and bristly as it was in his hometowns gardens. sleeping on this hill was gonna be a good memory someday, filled with happiness and love!

the sleeping bag almost burned with heat. he traced light circles on his lovers shoulder. a huff, he could hear the other one was smiling.

a heap of emotion, as light as a balloon and as yellow as flowers in a field in the middle of summer. peace. he sighed. he couldnt be more in love than in that moment, he was sure. he couldnt love any more than in that moment, he knew.

he felt like bursting with happiness, and screaming his bliss out to the stars.

everything was perfect.

suddenly there were tears, glimmering bright with joy.

he reaches over to the warm body next to him.

you still awake?

...

mmh...

i wish i could know what youre thinking.

sleep, youre talking non-sense.

...

okay.

the quiet whispers make the space behind his eyes feel tighter. the still air lets his hair stick to his forehead, leaving it wet and allowing transparent pearls to form on his cheeks. the heavy darkness in the room presses on him, the heat being even denser than the night before.

the fire burned out. he had seen the ashes coming, had been awaiting their slow approach and had been accepting them. he regretted not fighting. he regrets not letting anybody know – not even his love can tell that something is wrong. he ignores it if he notices.

his chest is heaving. breathing gets harder, thinking is tougher, and he wants to cough up the hoarsing knot in his throat.

everything is grievous.

and suddenly-
there are tears.
