Work Text:
“Ow, Luz!”
“Sorry, I’m being as gentle as I can!” Luz replied, as she tried to carefully spread the cream across Amity’s burnt shoulders and arms. “Do witches not tan or get sunburnt in the isles?”
“No, we don’t, because our sun isn’t constantly trying to kill us!”
Luz chuckled, and Amity felt her irritation simmer down a little. She tried to take a deep breath, getting a whiff of the nearby sea, before she sniffled, and immediately felt her irritation come back.
“And at least when our plants attack us, they make death quick,” she grumbled, grabbing another tissue. Ever since they had arrived she had been attacked by ‘pollen’ or whatever Luz called it, making her nose run and her eyes water; she hated it.
“I’m sorry, mi amor, I didn’t realise hayfever wasn’t just a human thing.” Luz placed a gentle kiss against the back of her head, and Amity was amazed again at how easily Luz could influence her emotions. It didn’t take away the pain of the sunburns, but it did help a bit.
She had been warned earlier on, but foolishly hadn’t paid enough attention and ended up paying the price.
-
“Hey Am? Make sure you don’t spend too long in the water, alright?”
“How come?” Amity raised an eyebrow as she swam over to the edge of the pool where Luz was drying off. They had it all to themselves courtesy of the Twins, who had been more than happy to spend a chunk of their parent’s money to cover the luxury vacation.
“Your sunscreen won’t last all day in there, you want to make sure you’re dried off and inside by the time it wears off.” Luz flashed her a quick wink as she threw the towel over her shoulder.
“Luz, if I can handle fire magic, I think I’ll be fine with a little bit of sunshine,” she said, shaking her head with amusement. “You go in and relax, I just want to enjoy this for a bit longer.”
As Luz headed back up to their suite, Amity stretched out and relaxed on the water, enjoying the sunlight that fell on her and listening to the birds chirping all around.
She felt at peace… and told herself she’d only stay for a few minutes longer...
-
Amity’s next memory had been Luz waking her up, wide-eyed, and noticing that it hurt an awful lot more to swim back to the edge and climb out than she remembered.
Luz’s grimace when she climbed out, confused Amity but that confusion quickly turned to horror when Luz took a picture of her, and then showed her a picture of what looked to be one of the human realm’s ‘lobsters’ but with long brown hair and wearing a swimsuit.
After a quick everlasting oath that the Twins could never be shown that picture, they headed upstairs, taking the back stairs to avoid running into any other guests, to where Amity was presently getting some cream applied to help with her burns.
“Alright… that should do it!” Luz stepped back to check her work and Amity acknowledged that the burns did hurt a bit less now. “Let’s see how this feels, if it still really hurts, we can put on more later, alright?”
“Alright,” Amity agreed as she turned around to catch Luz walking back after placing the bottle back with all the others they had gotten complimentary of their suite in the Dominican resort. Amity knew what basically none of them did, as while her Spanish was improving, she hadn’t quite gotten onto medicine and toiletries yet.
“I’m gonna grab us some food, anything in particular you want me to bring back?”
“Surprise me, just nothing too spicy.”
Luz placed a quick peck on Amity’s forehead before she spun around and left the room, singing along to some tune Amity didn’t recognise that was playing in the hallway.
As the door shut behind Luz, Amity went to stand up and immediately regretted it, as her shoulders started screaming at her with the movement.
Okay, time for a bit more of that cream.
Amity hobbled over to the collection of creams and bottles they’d received, and tried to figure out which one Luz had been using. Trying to figure out which bottle was which, she wished she hadn’t let Hooty annoy her out of using Duolingo all those years ago.
Hmm, this one says ‘Sol’, so sun. Probably that then?
Satisfied, she gently applied some to the areas where she was sore, before moving back towards the bed to rest and wait for Luz to bring up their dinner, which she could hopefully stomach without drinking a gallon of milk (Camila had kept apologising for half an hour, which was very sweet in comparison to the way Luz had laughed as they were leaving the house; her face still bright red.)
-
After taking a while to get to sleep, due to soreness and a nose that would not stop leaking, or running, as Luz put it, Amity’s morning ended up not being much better.
For once, she was not woken up by her wife waking up first and snuggling into her for warmth. Instead, she was woken up by the bright sunlight from their window, followed by a sharp pain when she tried to turn away from it that had her sitting straight up in bed, startling Luz awake beside her.
“Huh?” Luz blinked to clear her vision. “Mi amor, what’s... wrong…” she trailed off, wide-eyed.
“Ah, sorry, my shoulders just really hurt...” Amity clarified as she turned to her wife, before she noticed Luz was still staring… at her shoulders?
She glanced down, and immediately did a double take. Her palms, upper arms, and shoulders were all covered in blotchy patches of orange and brown.
“Amity, is this, uh, a witch thing?”
“No, this is not a witch thing! Not unless I was allergic to that bottle of sun cream!”
“Sun? Oh-” Luz jumped out of bed, turning to the bottles and creams and looking through them. “Amity, did you put anything on your shoulders after I left?”
“Yeah, some of that sun cream, it says ‘Sol’ on the front?”
“Ah…” Luz winced, as she turned holding 2 bottles, one of which, the Sol bottle Amity had used, and the other… a bottle that said ‘Sun Cream’.
Ah.
“It seems,” Luz chuckled, trying to hold back her laughter and visibly failing, “That when I was gone, you covered your sunburns in fake tan.”
Amity picked up a pillow, but just as she went to scream in it, she started sniffling again, and dropped it, settling for just a grumpy expression. The bright sunlight and cheers of happy families outside just outside their open window, felt like taunts now. How could they go out and enjoy their vacation while she was stuck like this?
Luz, noticing her plummeting mood, sidled up beside her with a soft smile. “Hey, mi amor, how about we have an ‘us’ day? I’ll bring you anything you need, we can order takeaway, and just sit here relaxing and watching the Azura movies? What do you say?”
Amity leaned back against Luz as much as she could, and let out a soft sigh with a small smile, grateful once again at just how kind the woman she had married was. She almost always knew just how to cheer her up.
“Yeah, that sounds nice.”
