And the Winner Is...

Notes:

For Steter Week 2021 - prompt Luxury and Struggle

Work Text:

Stiles looked down at the slip of paper in his hand. He looked up at the computer screen. Then back at the paper.

"Peter?" Stiles croaked.

Peter looked up sharply. "Sweetheart. What's wrong?"

Stiles held out the slip of paper.

"A lottery ticket? Really, Stiles!" Peter chided. "You know better than that!"

"I think I won," Stiles stuttered.

"What did you win?" Peter frowned.

"Everything?" Stiles pointed to the numbers on the computer screen.

Stiles watched as Peter looked at the screen and then back to the slip of paper.

"Oh, dear."

"That's what I thought!" Stiles waved the ticket.

"Can we claim this anonymously?" Stiles asked.

Peter shook his head. "Not in California. They announce the name of the winner and the location where the ticket was sold. Where did you get it?"

"Peterson's garage," Stiles said. "I was getting gas and figured I'd get a ticket on a lark."

"I'll have Derek help him out until the furor dies down," Peter nodded. "Derek likes Curt Peterson and shouldn't mind."

"Good idea," Stiles agreed. Curt Peterson was probably eighty years old. He'd need someone to help him with the crowds. And the rowdies.

"So. What do we do now?"

"Before we claim the money, we change our phones. No one should be able to get through your wards to the Den, thankfully. So that's safe. I'll get the firm to hire another lawyer and an accountant. We'll need the help," Peter outlined.

"I'll let dad know," Stiles nodded. "I doubt I can get him to take any time off, but he may want some help when people go looking for us."

"We'll let the pack know," Peter added.

"I'd like to put a big chunk of this into the pack fund," Stiles said. "Share the wealth, so to speak."

"We'll use the lawyers to set up a charity," Peter decided. "Anyone who asks, send them to the firm."

"Umm... I know we always could have done this, but, well... could we do a decadent cruise somewhere?" Stiles asked hesitantly.

"Like book an entire ship level of decadent?" Peter asked. "What did you have in mind?"

"Oh! Never thought of that!" Stiles grinned. "No. Like take the most expensive suite with maid service. And all the massages. And... unlimited drinks."

"You'll drink yourself sick in two days and not enjoy any of the trip," Peter warned.

"Too true," Stiles laughed.

Stiles blinked as cameras flashed. The Lottery people had wanted a bigger award ceremony, but the lawyers they had hired managed to keep it simple. It was a lot of hoopla, although it was half a billion dollars.

The charity they had set up already had hundreds of requests.

Fleeing the press, Peter waited in a limo, Derek and Boyd acting as bodyguards to keep everyone away.

"Glad that part's over!" Stiles sighed, leaning in for a kiss.

"I'm grateful we'll be out of town," Peter nodded.

"I'm just glad we can do some good with this money," Stiles said.
