Work Text:

The ocean breeze was cool against his porcelain skin. Despite the warm air of the summer sunset it still brought goosebumps and a soft shiver down his delicate protruding spine. Though there were few clouds and the sun's descent brought a serene calm to the island, it failed to bring ease to his ever demanding inner monologue.

Surely he didn't deserve all of this. To be surrounded by such hope, such prestige. He was a pathetic mess of a boy after all, sickly and frail, and at this rate he was sure he wouldn't survive long enough to make even a scratch of an impact. Unlike his peers who seemed to exude hope and a certainty of a better future. Every change his useless “talent” made seemed to only bring torture and pain to those he loved the most.

He scratched at the hangnails itching at the corners of his bitten fingertips. Too much so that a trickle of blood oozed down the corner of the nail bed. Quickly he caught it on the cuff of his jacket, already embarrassed from his self hatred now having to pay physically for what his own anxiety had caused him.

He couldn't even enjoy this quiet moment without making it about himself. That's all he ever did. He blamed himself for any terrible thing that happened to the people around him, whether it was his luck's fault or not. Tsumiki tripped and caused Koizumi to break her camera the other day. He had only watched from the side of the room but he was sure his presence was enough to cause such a display.

He was sickly, revolting, cowardly, pathet-

“You look so beautiful,”

Oh

He had forgotten you were there for a moment. So lost in his own head. Turning he looked at your gleaming face. The summer sun makes you glow and your eyes filled with so much adoration he feared he imagined it, scared he'd mistaken your disgust for kindness. But genuinity shined so brightly in your features even he couldn't deny it.

But how could you be anything but genuine when the soft glow of the now rising moon shined through his delicate white locks, dusted with his natural auburn shade here and there. He was getting healthier whether he saw it or not. Even his skeletal frame had gained weight as his health bettered.

And his ghostly eyes looked almost distraught at your interruption from the peace. Lips parted softly almost in a gasp like you had startled him. If he didn't look so wonderful you would have felt bad for breaking the moment.

A light blush coated his cheekbones as he processed your compliment, ever grateful you had brought his thoughts away from the deafeningly loathsome words that bounced around his own mind.

“Thank you…” He whispered softly, too lost to even dismiss your compliment. He was getting better at taking them, at least with you. The delight in your eyes makes his heart pound and cheeks warm even more. It was so much nicer to see than the disappointment you showed when he challenged your admiration for his features.

You pressed your forehead to his and he really did gasp this time. Your quiet chuckle made his breath catch in his throat and he thought he'd choke for a second. Your hand rested so carefully against his collarbone and for a millionth time that night his breath hitched when your soft sweet lips pressed to his.

He was scared to move, to ruin the moment but couldn't help placing a fragile bony hand on your waist. He felt your lips curve into a smile against his own before you pulled away carefully, nuzzling your nose against his and he was sure he'd have a heart attack right on the spot.

But peace returned as you buried your face in his throat, sighing contently, your breath tickling his sensitive skin right at his pulse, where you laid another delicate kiss before returning your attention to the quickly setting sun.

A blanket of warmth covered the sky, clouds as delicate as goose down hovered over the horizon of the ocean and for once his mind was quiet.
