Work Text:

Rachel Dawes stops in her steps, as if she called out to her—and, well, she did, if only in her head. She turns around, and the alley is dark, but her face is still visible enough to see the edge in her green eyes, the edge that makes Jane—Clarice, she is Clarice, right now—shiver.

She stares at her for a few moments, tightens her hands in her pocket. On her taser, that Clarice knows.

(She doesn’t. Why would Clarice know? Clarice doesn’t know Rachel Dawes. Jane does.)

“Jane,” Rachel says, tone flat, taking out the taser slowly, lifting it in front of her like a gun. “What do you want?”

Clarice scratches at her arm. Jane stares at the corner of Rachel’s mouth. Talking to the other woman always feels strange, because it makes Jane feel present, makes Jane come out, makes Jane feel, and Jane is blank. She’s supposed to be blank.

“I am Clarice right now.”

Rachel Dawes scoffs. A car drives by the street behind them, not entering the alley they’re both standing in, but the headlights shine in anyway, making Rachel’s hair glitter. Brown, copper, gold. Clarice stands still. Jane wants to touch the other woman’s hair, wants to rip it out of her scalp.

“You’re not.”

Clarice swallows, looks to the side. “How do you know?”

Because Rachel always knows. Rachel takes a few looks at her, Rachel’s eyes are clever and cutting, and Rachel always knows, sooner or later. She figures her out. She sees something, when there’s supposed to be nothing.

“The way you talk. Your mannerisms.”

That’s a lie. Clarice doesn’t know that, but Jane does.

“I mimic them perfectly.”

Rachel Dawes doesn’t waver, but something crosses her face, and her hand tightens on her taser, the only barrier between them.

“The way you look at me, then.”

Rachel Dawes is not an open book, never has been. Clarice doesn’t know that, but Jane does, because Jane watches. Jane watches when Rachel keeps everyone at distance.

Rachel Dawes is honest, however. Painfully, recklessly so. Jane asks, and Rachel answers. Pathologically, almost, maybe. Jane will need to study that more.

“Are you going to try to kill me?”

Clarice is distraught. Kill anyone? Why would she ever do that?

(Jane is giddy. Jane is delighted.)

“No,” she answers slowly, not sure who is speaking. “Not yet. Not the time yet.”

Notes:
