Work Text:

It started because he was bored.

hey

what r u doing?

Akihito shivered. It was quite cold, and he has been sitting now for over an hour here.

Here being his hide-out in the beams of an old warehouse that was supposed to the meeting place between a politician and one of the many detectives on his pay roll. Satou Kenjirou was the current runner up in the elections for Tokyo’s mayorship, and if the rumors were true, the ultimate winner of the race.

Akihito got this tip from his chief-editor, and after a lot of digging and calling in various favors, he had the location locked down.

Now he only had to figure out the date and time.

He had no idea how to get this information apart from directly trailing Satou for potentially weeks. And he had no guarantee he wouldn't be noticed by the security constantly surrounding the politician. The thing was, Aki was pretty good at slipping away from bodyguards (endless practice makes perfect, after all), but being on the other end of the equation was something entirely different. The clue for the date came from the most unlikely of places: Asami.

It was a rare occasion for the two of them to be at home at the same time during the day, but it did happen from time to time. Aki tried very hard not to let Asami notice how he treasured those hours before one of them had to inevitably leave. He had caught himself putting off work and social calls in favor of spending more time with Asami. Not that they were doing much, anyway. Since Asami pretty much refused to talk about business at home and they had different interests, there were not many topics that didn’t bore Asami or make Akihito feel silly. And yet, even when he felt Asami was humoring him by having actual conversations, Akihito still liked it. He liked it because it gave him a little insight into the person that Asami was in private. Funny, how you can know a person so intimately and extensively in some aspects, yet be total strangers in another. Akihito knew Asami’s preferred ramen toppings (as much pork as possible), his opinion on suits (“Strelleson is just not the same as Armani””), and his favorite sex position (missionary, which surprisingly was not kinky at all). But his favorite book as a child? This one cringy phase everyone had in middle school? The first time he got drunk? Hell, how he got into the shady business he’s now in?! So, Akihito took every opportunity to pull Asami into any sort of conversation.

On such a particular morning, Asami had been drinking his coffee and reading the newspaper, while Akihito had been chopping up vegetables for the stew he wanted to cook in the slow cooker. He had no idea when he’d be home that night, so he always tried to have something (relatively healthy) to eat right away when he didn’t feel like cooking after work. And if he was running late, well, then instant ramen was back on the menu. And Asami could cope. He had an army of underlings to send into the night and get him takeout.

Suddenly, Asami snorted loudly. Akihito was not used to such unconscious sign of contempt from his lover. Asami prided himself on his supposed perfect self-control, so Akihito turned his head to him.

“What’s wrong?”

“Hmm?” Asami looked up like he hadn’t noticed the noise that escaped him.

“Something in that made you snort with scorn,” Aki waved with a knife in the general direction of the newspaper. “What was it?”

“Why do you want to know?”

Aki shrugged and turned back to the counter to chop the potatoes. “Call me curious.”

At first, all he got was a pensive humming, but then he got an actual answer. “You know that the mayor of Tokyo’s up for re-election?”

Aki nodded, and dupped all of the ingredients into the slow cooker. He cleaned his hands while Asami continued. “Well, Satou Kenjirou has decided to dethrone our current mayor and take his place.” Asami said it all as if the statement in itself was enough of an explanation for Akihito. Satou was his mark, but Aki neither knew nor cared about the actual chances he had to become mayor.

“So?”

Asami looked at him with a raised brow, like he was surprised Akihito was not up to day with the intricacies of the local and national politics. And now Aki felt silly, even though he had never been keen on politics or ever will be.

“The man’s a fool,” Asami explained. “He will lose.”

“Why do you say that? I heard his platform was quite popular.” Akihito overheard some office workers talking about the election at a cross walk the day before, but he had been late to a photoshoot, so he didn’t have the time to keep listening. It was the only thing that has stuck in his memory.

“Sure, people like to hear promises of more funding for education and ending corruption.”

“That’s what he’s running on? But he’s corrupt himself!” Akihito exclaimed in outrage.

“Obviously. He’s a politician. But more importantly, how do you know about that, kitten?”

Well, crap. Asami had turned that sharp gaze onto him, and he wouldn’t let go until Aki coughed up what he was up to, Aki knew. Like some kind of twisted predator that didn’t let go until its’ prey was dead.

“Oh, well, I heard some things at work. Rumors and such, nothing interesting.” Aki turned away and started puttering around the kitchen randomly to get away from the topic. “So, uh, how’s Kirishima? He liked the onigiri I brought by last week? I hope you shared.”

But Asami was dead set on making Aki speak.

“Of course, I didn’t. The food you make for me is a sign of undeniable affection you have in your heart for me, kitten. And I don’t share. But don’t think you can distract me-”

Akihito interrupted him with indignant sputtering and half-choked insult that could not get fast enough out of his mouth. “YOU- How dare you-, I- I-, WHAT are you talking abou- NO, NO, NO, you bastard, how can-!”

And then Asami had the nerve to shush him. Akihito thought he would pop a vein any moment now, he was sure. The DISRESPECT-

“Be honest, he’s on your target list, isn’t he?”

Since Aki has had neither the chance nor the inclination to calm down, the answer might have come out more shrilly than he had wanted.

“So what if he is?! That’s none of your business, old man! Don’t you dare stick your nose into it, or even to tell me whether or not I take this assignment!”

Asami had not seemed particularly scared by Akihito’s outburst. “I didn’t intend to, kitten. Satou’s small fry I have no interest in, and he has barely any connections that could become dangerous to you. Knock yourself out.” With that, he returned back to his newspaper.

Akihito was stumpted. This was not how this usually went.

He opened his mouth to say something, anything, but found himself speechless.

“Huh?”

“Huh what, kitten?”

“You- you’re not going to interfere with my work?”, Akihito asked.

“No,” Asami repeated. “As long as you’re not endangering yourself needlessly, I won’t.”

Akihito blinked, his eyes wide. “Really?”

Asami raised his head to look at him. “Yes. Why are you acting so surprised?”

“Gee, I wonder why,” Akihito said, the sarcasm dripping in abundance.

Asami just rolled his eyes, seemingly biting back his usual response of only acting to keep his lover safe. It would only have led to further arguments Aki did not feel like having at any time, much less right there and then.

Deeming the conversation finished, Akihito turned to the spice shelf to pick out what he needed for his stew. He decided to make it extra spicy so Asami couldn’t eat it and would have to organize something himself. Though he would probably just skip the meal, knowing the bastard, he never took good care of himself if Kirishima didn’t step in.

Absorbed in his grumpy thoughts, he only caught the tail end of Asami’s seemingly random remark.

“....- meeting with a committee. But you might already know that.”

“Hmmm, what did you say? I was distracted.”

From behind the newspaper, Asami repeated himself. “I just said that Satou sent the press a statement that he won’t make it to meet the committee for impoverished youths he was supposed to talk to tonight. Take this information however you want.”

For the second time that morning, Asami had surprised him.

“Oh,” he said softly, “thanks.”

Asami just shrugged lightly and stood up to go dress himself for work, leaving Akihito alone in the kitchen.

Aki looked at Asami’s retreating back, and then at the bottle of chili flakes in his hand. Trying very hard not to question himself, he put the bottle back onto the shelf.

Akihito’s palm was pressed against his flaming cheeks. Why was Asami flirting like this with him? The innuendo and sexting he could understand, but the last messege? What the fuck? Before he could get himself too worked up about it, he sent a humorous text, ignoring the last part of Asami’s quip.

LOL u sick bastard, u

stay safe, kitten

As is heaven itself was listening to him, the sound of the warehouse door opening prevented him from actually lying. Putting his personal thoughts away for now, he concentrated on the proceedings below him. His phone, now safely muted in his pocket, stayed silent as he gripped his camera and did his job.
