An Amnesiac's Guide to Another World of Magic, Adventure, and Monsters

Summary:

hmm how to summarize this...

So this will take place in an alternate reality with magic, adventure, and monsters just like the title advertises. I've had this idea just floating around in my head for ages now and I did originally want to do a choose your own adventure style text based game, but that's a lot of commitment right now and so I'm writing this to just get a path down for now, I'll probably start on the game sometime after finishing this. The game will be based of this work although there will be more option and different endings, different surviving characters or different so's. I'll leave options at the end of each chapter for readers to pick for the next chapter. This is my first real try at writing something longer and trying to put it out into the internet and I'll try my best at it.

Chapter 1: Intro

Chapter Text

Right. so this is the intro to how this story will work and all that jazz. This story is my idea for a choose your own adventure text based game I want to do, but I don't have enough time to do all that so for now I'm writing it out on here and letting whoever reads the chapters choose a few options I'll put at the end of the chapter. Before I start on the next chapter I'll read through all the comments (probably responding to everyone) then seeing which option won and going from there. I have numerous ideas for how this could go but what I'll end up writing is all up to reader's choices. Now that the general premise of the book is covered I'll just quickly list things that will be included in the book. The Bolded words are just the "bottom line jist" of my wordy ass rambling, promise the story will be less awkward i'm just making up this "intro" as I go.

  1. Because this was/will be a cyoa game it was originally gonna have a player design their own character so I'll make up a gender neutral name and try to avoid describing them too much. Gender neutral main character & They/Them pronouns.
  2. Romance, so there will be male and female characters that readers can attempt to woo, not exactly sure how I'll work this... maybe end notes might keep like an affection score tally or something, but anyways romance may or may not happen. No decided partner(s?).
  3. there will probably be a lot of character death... sort of, for fights I'll give fewer options but someone will lead to the main character doing in which case I'll "boot up the last save file" then I'll pick up with the second most popular option. Lots of potential character death.
  4. There might be triggering themes later on, the first couple chapters should be relatively free of these, I think, but if and when they do pop up I'll make note of them at the start of the chapter and I'll update tags on the work as it progresses. Feel free to request a tag be added I'm honestly not to sure what to put in the tags and if you feel like a trigger warning needs to be put on a chapter that I haven't already done please let me know. Possibly contains triggering material.
  5. endings! yeesh! I have like 20 like hard endings for the book and honestly no clue which one we'll end up at so y'all are only slightly more in the dark than I am about what's going to happen in the book, I do have character laid out along with back story and some plot points but these will all change greatly based on choices. who knows what the ending will look like but that's part of the fun.
  6. now on to the less important stuff of course there will be magic... sort of. There will be monsters most if not all loosely based off of mythology, if something is different though I likely did it on purpose. Monsters & Magic ofc!
  7. Updates will be sporadic probably especially cause I won't even be able to prepare until I see what the votes have decided on. Hopefully the waits will be worth it, but I can't grantee any schedule for updates or anything. Random upload schedule
  8. If y'all have any suggestions for improvement don't be afraid to let me know! I'm pretty new to letting anyone read my writing so it's helpful for me as I do want to get better as I go. this entire book will basically be like a more refined rough draft for the game I want to do later. That being said please excuse my grammar mistakes I'll try to fix them as I go but I probably won't be rereading my work often I'll likely read which option won work on that till I've finished writing it then posting it immediately. Feel free to make suggestions!
  9. Lastly lets have fun! this is meant to be fun it's a pet project of mine I've been building up numerous separate paths in my mind over the last couple years and I want everyone who reads it too enjoy it as much as possible. Lets have fun!

As I said I wanted to make the character fully customizable but in this it's kinda hard but if you add this to you web browser you can change the main character's name to what ever you'd like just like how you would in the game.

Notes:

(This will be how the options look... I think)

1) option 1
This will explain the option a little bit, probably from the point of view of the character so it might not be all that reliable but could help in making a decision.

2) Well of course you've gotta talk to them.
They seem to mean you no harm, chatting could get you some valuable intel

3) hell no I'm not letting down my guard that easily.
Stay read with your sword out in front of you, will leave you more defensible if they were to attack you suddenly

4) Ugh I'm so over this let someone else handle them
Step back in the group and let someone else deal with this, whoever takes over will end up determining how the encounter goes

Chapter 2: The Prologue

Summary:

Some background information on the world as a whole, mostly just common or widely believed knowledge that our amnesiac main character won't know right off the bat. Compiling it this way should make it easier for readers rather than having to piece it all together themselves over time. In the end, I'll explain how to pick stats for the next chapter.

Chapter Text

Long ago the great god Lynir crafted the world from their own body. The skies crafted of their breath, the land from their hair, and the seas from their blood. They crafted the stars in beautifully dazzling swirls in the night sky and a beautiful perfectly pristine pale blue moon Lynir dubbed Daear. Days went by as Lynir basked in the glow of the beautiful eternal night they'd created for their new planet before the god decided to bring more to the world.

Lynir with a clap of their hands called forth light to the world and lit a blazing star unmatched in the sky bringing the day to the planet. Next, they created life for the planet starting with plants they created numerous exotic types before they moved to animals. Eventually, Lynir again got bored with the current forms of life and decided to make animals that could think for themselves, what followed was many different creations of magical and non-magical creatures all with the power to truly think and feel. Lynir thought that free thought was a truly beautiful gift but the overabundance of magic in the world aided in the escalation of conflicts between the many races.

Lynir was unsure of what to do to fix the raging conflicts between the numerous races but held out hope that the races would find the correct answers and stop the fighting themselves. Alas, such a thing didn't happen, the war between the races lasted for many years before Lynir finally put an end to it; Humans, Elves, and other humanoid races had started the war going after the "Monsterous" races. The Humanoids had practically wiped out the monstrous races before Lynir intervened and punished all the world in what came to be known as The Calamity.

No one knows for sure how long the devastation of The Calamity occurred, but it's mostly thought to have been many years. Lynir plagued the world with uncountable curses from an unending storm to disease, famine, and death.  when the skies finally cleared of the worldwide storms there were only the Humans and Elves left. Freed from the storms the remaining people found their ability to channel magic gone and Lynir spoke from the havens
"Rather than wipe out all life on this planet a game shall commence, my gift to harness the bounty of this world's magic has been revoked to you, unworthy people. Using these taken gifts I've created mystic orbs with your lost powers and scattered them across the planet, my two angels shall descend from the heavens to decide the end of the game. You survivors shall take up the orbs and use their powers to fight however no person may wield more than one. All of you shall decide your own fates for if the angel of light dies so too shall all life on this planet, but shall the angel of dark die the world shall continue. It is up to all of you to build up enough strength and kill one of the angels."

To aid the angel's mission he gifted them each two mystical orbs of their own which the people gathered near saw them transform into items. One angel was blessed with a massive sword the length of his body and beautiful leather boots with glided wings of gold attached to the ankles he had beautiful violet hair that glimmered in the sun and beautiful silver eyes. The Second angel received a cloak as dark as midnight and intricately carved earmuffs, lacking in fur but instead detailed with beautiful silver designs of a woman screaming on either side; This angel had teal hair and shining gold eyes that glowed in the light. The angels were quick to try and persuade the people nearby towards their aid so they showed off the abilities of their items. The first angel's boots activated in a blast of wind as the golden wings fluttered and massive wings made of wind wormed around them lifting him into the sky, The second used his cloak of night and bent the very shadows to his will. Predictably the people quickly turned against the angel of darkness and the angels began to fight. The two fought for weeks, originally on equal standing until several people appeared with magical items from the hidden orbs. As the battle turned against the dark angel he fled weakened and on his last legs. Both angels have since disappeared and this "game" of Lynir has been written off as a fairy tale made up by the survivors of The Calamity and even the god responsible for the creation of the world has fallen silent and relegated to myth.

After The Calamity, Humans and Elves returned to separation and even aggression, the two race relationship remaining tenuous at best up to modern times and created separate nations. As time progressed society advanced and both races sought after mystic orbs, with the items already claimed by either side being used to create new technology and for warfare. Both peoples quickly found the few magical items on "safe land" being only a small percent of the more powerful and numerous magic items predicted to lie inside The Dark Forrest.

The Dark Forest as it was dubbed by humans is a massive forest that marks the edge of the known world. The Dark Forest is dense and contains strange magical plants and creatures, in the forest, there are lots of magic material to be harvested and contains all the remaining mystical orbs. Both societies constantly try to explore the forest to harvest magical items and materials but all larger efforts by the nations are thwarted by a strange phantom-like being. To try and encourage more successful ventures within The Forest the Human Republic began training small groups of mercenaries that they certify to enter The Dark Forest and are paid to return with mystic orbs and magical materials. Elves quickly adopted a similar method to entering the forest and the smaller groups have had a much higher success rate.

Following the implementation of paid adventurers, the walls barricading the forest have been pushed back and there have been new settlements popping up in newly claimed areas. The new adventurer groups slowly cleared areas near society and picked them dry of both monsters and magical materials leaving them perfectly normal lands so the boundaries have been pushed back steadily, albeit slowly. With these groups of mercenaries traveling the largely unknown forest, there have been several groups that have gained notoriety and wealth although groups tend to work exclusively for one side the most famous adventurer breaks this mold.

Castien Howard, A human "hunter" of the deepest parts of the Dark Forest who's brought back untold amounts of magical items to both races. Castien played both sides and as such became one of the most wealthy people on the planet and easily the most famous person. Castien was also one of the precious few solo adventurers who against all odds manage to brave the wilds and return alive. Howard is retired comfortably in the elven country but still is considered a very powerful influence in either country and still maintains his powerful and unique magic item. Castien in all sense of the word was a paradigm shifter and in turn, raised the bar for all who brave the forest, he worked for both countries solo and found the only magic item that has multiple parts all that can be used at once by a single person; unheard of since The Calamity and the first appearance of magical items.

There is all the "common knowledge" of the past in this new world and what the people of the world typically know about the formation of the world. The next chapter will show the start of the story and the appearance of the main character. Who are they? Where do they fit into the world? Maybe you'll find out next time, till then have a good day and hope you enjoyed it!

Now for the first choices for this book, the main characters stats this will be a more complicated choice than any other will be later as it will have several parts but basically, you'll have 4 options and you pick a stat for each option. so the average stat is 5/10, the six stats are Charm, Body, Strength, Speed, Intelligence, and Awareness.
here are the starter stats for the main character-
STR- 8/10
SPEED- 8/10
BODY- 8/10
INTEL- 5/10
AWARE- 5/10
CHARM- 5/10
Now a quick breakdown of how each stat will work Strength how hard the character will hit, how much he can lift/push, just like physical strength. Speed is how fast the character can move also represents the ability for acrobatic-like abilities and how fleet of foot they are. Body this is how hardy a character is would determine how much damage they could take before dropping and their resistance to things like heat, poison, their endurance. Intelligence isn't book smarts as in the title the main character has amnesia and won't know much beyond common sense although this stat will increase that but will also affect things like tactical options in conversations and combat. Awareness is how perceptive the character is how likely they'll see traps and can even affect their movements finding better paths, firmer footing, etc. Charm is how personable they will be the higher the more likely they can talk their way out of things, convince other people of things, and lie. Now each in the endnotes will be the points you can assign to each trait. you may assign to a trait however much you want but it maxes out at 10/10. specifically, Intelligence, Awareness, and Charm all have special capabilities only unlocked at max (normally this would be something you'd find by replaying the game but you can't do that in the book so just putting it out there) strength, speed, and body also have boons at 10/10 but they are more combat-focused and less unique like a maxed speed would just make you super-fast. maxed speed wouldn't give you crazy fast speed like the flash but it would make your speed verge on unnatural same for each maxed skill.

Notes:

so this one will be a little different than later choices instead of a number you'll need to put which stat so your choice should be something like this. Speed, Aware, Strength, Intel.

1) This stat will increase by 2

2) This stat will increase by 2

3) This stat will increase by 1

4) this stat will decrease by 2

keep in mind with this you will only be able to max either max out one of Charm, Intel, and Aware or spread the stat boosts and you could potentially max out two of Speed, Strength, and Body. One stat will be, basically, a dump stat for the character (they've gotta have something I can use against them later 😉). Alright so have fun picking your stats! depending on how many actual comments I get I might just do which one for each option was most popular. See you all next chapter where will finally meet the main character... dang I really need to pick out a neutral name for them... actually if y'all wanna put suggestions in your comments too I wouldn't mind.
