Chapter 1: Prologue
Chapter Text
Mira's POV
I skim through the questions sent to me for the next article, and so far, nothing promising has come up. I glance at my writing partner, Emma Dreyar, typing away at her computer. We both work part-time on Fiore Love, a Q&A column. You ask a question about love, and we hopefully have an answer.
"Hey, Mira," Emma says, spinning around in her swivel chair. "You have to listen to this question." Her eyes light up, and I can tell she's found something interesting.
"Is it that good?" I raise a brow at her excitement. She gets worked up about anything, even a chipmunk, so with her, you never know.
"Yes," Emma huffs at my remark, giving me a glare.
I giggle. "Then go ahead and tell me." I motioned for her to continue.
"Dear Black Cat and Barista" We go by nicknames for the advice column, because some readers can be... rude, "I want to take my girlfriend somewhere different for dates. Restaurants and movies are nice, but she's getting bored. Can you give me some suggestions? From, Unromantic."
I bite my lip, smiling. "This is a really good question."
Emma lets out a dramatic sigh. "I do too, but I don't want to just answer it. This deserves more than a simple plan or boring list."
I nod. "I agree. But how do we show that?" I tap my chin thoughtfully. Emma grabs her black stress ball with red hearts, pacing back and forth while squeezing it. That's her thinking ritual.
After thirty minutes, she stops mid-step. "I've got it!" she exclaims, throwing her hands in the air. "We make it a series, different dates each week, and we highlight one favorite option."
"That's a great idea," I say, tapping my foot. "But we need reasoning for the order. What about... A through Z?"
Emma jumps up and down excitedly. "Perfect! We can offer three exciting and unique options but show off our favorite one." I high-five her.
"One problem," she says, dropping into her chair.
I cross my arms. "And what would that be?"
Emma gives me a look that screams 'obvious.' "We don't have a couple to use for testing."
"Why not you and Rogue?" I ask. Rogue Cheney is from the Sabertooth journalists who work at the Fiore Journal. They'd been dating secretly for two months before I caught them making out on Emma's desk. Now, seven months later, everyone in the building knows.
"You know as well as I do that Rogue won't want to be part of a project. Plus, I'll be dragging him along to make sure I'm not lonely while following the chosen couple." She shakes her head. "What about you and Laxus?"
My cheeks heat. We'd been dating secretly for four months, but luckily the office doesn't know. "Laxus wouldn't want a public relationship, and I'll make him help set up the dates anyway. Big no."
"What about Gray and Juvia?"
Emma paces again. "Cute couple, but Gray would never volunteer. Not worth the trouble.... Ummm.... Lis and Bixlow?"
"No way," I respond.
"Levy and Gajeel?"
Emma tosses her stress ball in the air. "Gajeel might be a little... scary. And he hates having his picture taken. He nearly broke my camera once."
"I'd suggest Ezra and Jellal," I giggle, "but we'd have to track him down first." Jellal's always vanishing, usually for stories involving gangs, smuggling rings, and... pet nappings. Ezra knows best; we don't question him.
"True, that leaves... Natsu and Lucy," Emma points out with a sly grin.
"They're perfect!" She exclaims. "It's obvious they like each other."
"Natsu's always protecting Lucy."
"Him and Happy basically live at her place; I've caught him sleeping in her bed."
"True. They basically live together, despite what Lucy says."
"Her bathroom has his products."
"He keeps clothes there too."
"And he gets jealous when Loke or Dan flirts with her."
"She's barely gone on a case without him in two years."
"And she blushes whenever he hugs her or puts his arm around her."
"She even admitted it's lonely when he's not there."
"You know what, Mira? I think we just found our couple." Emma sits back, triumphant. "I call convincing Natsu."
"How is that fair?" I glare.
Emma smirks. "Simple. I called him, you've got leverage on Lucy if needed, and you can be... persuasive when you want."
I sigh, defeated. "Fine. One more thing, what do we call this project?"
"A to Z Dates. As a personal side project: A to Z NaLu Dates, to track progress." Emma thinks a moment. "After lunch, we start researching and convince our future couple to help. All in favor?"
"I." I roll my eyes but play along.
"Good, unanimous. Meeting adjourned!" Emma laughs so hard she falls out of her chair.
"Come on, let's get lunch," I say, grabbing my purse, rolling my eyes at her silliness as she giggles behind me.
Chapter 2: I'll Give You Two Option, Yes or Yes
Chapter Text
Emma's POV
I walk into the sports room to find Natsu and convince him to help with Mira's and my latest project. Like most people at the Fiore Journal, Natsu works in multiple sections of the paper. According to Gray, he's assigned to the sports room today.
The room is a shrine to all things sports. Hundreds of photos and clippings cover the walls. Each desk is assigned to a different sport, basketball, football, tennis, you name it. Equipment fills the corners, and there are more types of balls than I can count. Most people avoid this part of the office; it's too chaotic when the sports reporters are around.
But today isn't one of those days. I spot Natsu typing at one of the computers, apparently working on the latest basketball game. We cover middle school and high school sports in the surrounding areas, and collegiate and professional leagues for all of Fiore.
"Hello, Natsu," I greet, pulling up a chair. He glances at me, flashes his smile, and removes his glasses. It shocked some people that Natsu needed reading glasses, but all the girls decided they make him look more mature and handsome. Lucy turned bright red the first time she saw him wearing them.
"What's up, Emma?" Natsu asks, spinning in his chair. "Do I need to beat up Rogue again?"
When the Sabertooth group was created, Natsu and Gajeel often clashed with Sting and Rogue. To settle things, they had a boxing match. Natsu won, knocking out both Sting and Rogue, and almost his own partner, Gajeel.
"No, but I do need your help with a new project for Fiore Love," I say, smiling.
Natsu frowns in confusion. "Why do you need my help?"
"Well, Mira and I need test subjects for it," I reply vaguely.
"What will I have to do?" He eyes me suspiciously. I almost forgot about Natsu's knack for reading between the lines, like the chocolate hearts disaster.
"Simply put, you're going on twenty-six A to Z dates with Lucy," I explain. "The dates will happen once or twice a week, and they won't be overdone, like movies or dinner."
Natsu gives me a "no thanks" look. Fine, I think. "And Lucy's already agreed, so if you don't want to do it, we can ask Loke or Dan." The spark of fire in Natsu's eyes is unmistakable jealousy. I mentally high-five myself for my quick thinking. There is no reason he needs to know Lucy hasn't technically agreed yet.
"I'll do it!" Natsu jumps out of his chair, startling the sleeping blue cat, Happy, on the desk. I still don't know how a cat can be blue while Rogue's is green and wears a pink frog costume. But they are totally cute.
"Good. I'll email you all the info about the first date and make sure you pick up Lucy," I say, waving as I leave before he can change his mind. Once the door closes, I do a little happy dance. "One down. Let's hope Mira can convince Lucy."
Mira's POV
I walk down the hallway toward the book review room. Lucy, Levy, and occasionally Ezra would be there, reading or typing reviews. Today, Lucy is focused on the Bad Kitty series for the children's book section, according to Levy.
The room is one of the quietest in the building. All four walls are lined with bookshelves holding every book we've ever reviewed. Two old wooden desks each have a computer, bookmarks, pencils, and candy wrappers scattered about. The carpet is plush, and the chairs are all different kinds, there's always an option for where to sit.
I open the door carefully and spot Lucy laughing in a pink beanbag chair. "Hello, Lucy," I say, smiling.
"Hi, Mira," she replies, placing a bookmark in her book. "Do you need something?"
"Actually, yes. I was wondering if you'd help with a project for Fiore Love," I say sweetly.
"I think I'll pass," Lucy responds quickly, looking anywhere but me.
I raise a brow. Really? She could just say yes. "Lucy, let me rephrase you have two options: yes, or yes." I give her a sweetly wicked smile.
"I'd rather not do... whatever it is you want me to do," the blonde sighs.
"All you're going to do is go on 26 test dates with Natsu. That's it."
Lucy's eyes widen. "Has Natsu agreed yet?" she asks suspiciously.
"Of course he has," I say smoothly. No need for her to know he technically hasn't.
"I'm not going to get out of this, am I?" she asks, crossing her arms.
"Nope."
"Fine." Lucy throws her hands up in defeat.
"Good. I'll email you the details for the first date later. Bye!" I skip out happily.
Back at the Love Office, I see Emma sitting in her chair with a notebook. "Natsu's in. How did it go with Lucy?"
"She was reluctant at first, but she caved. What about Natsu?"
"He wasn't sure until I mentioned that Lucy might go on the dates with someone else."
"Oh, that was a good idea."
"No kidding. Now... to plan the first date."
Chapter 3: Date A: Air Hockey
Chapter Text
Natsu's POV
I was working on the latest basketball article, waiting for an email from Mira or Emma. Honestly, I was excited; going on a date with Lucy? I'd wanted to ask her out since freshman year of college, but I didn't want to risk our friendship. It had been two days since Emma asked me for help, and the article about what was coming had already been published.
From the Article:
Hello Readers,
A question came in recently, and because of it, we came up with a brand-new idea: A to Z Dates! Everyone knows dates get boring when they're the same thing over and over, so we're here to help. For each letter of the alphabet, we test out one of three selected dates, then write about it. Of course, there are alternative dates for each letter if you don't like the first idea. We hope you enjoy!

Black Cat and Barista
The response had been overwhelmingly positive. Mira and Emma couldn't wait to get started, but they said they had to plan each date carefully. I glanced at my laptop and saw a new email. I opened it quickly.
Hello Natsu,
Your first date will be Air Hockey. Be in the game room in the lounge at 7:00 pm tonight. Lucy will meet you there. Don't dress fancy, you'll be playing air hockey. And don't be late!
Emma
Air Hockey? That actually sounded fun. I glanced at the clock: 5:30 pm. I should probably go home and change into something casual instead of this stupid suit. I finished the article paragraph I'd been working on and sent it off to Levy for revisions. Lucy usually handled them too, but I didn't want to add more work to her day.
I picked up Happy, my blue cat, and my bag, and headed to the parking garage. I reached the elevator but decided to take the stairs. I always got motion sickness in elevators, but I seemed to handle cars as long I was driving otherwise hand me a barf bag. Happy balanced effortlessly on my shoulder as I ran down the steps. How does he do that without digging his claws into me? Don't know, don't care.
At my car, I slid in after Happy leapt onto his pillow in the passenger seat. I placed my bag on the floor, started the engine, and my red car roared to life. Backing out, I drove off toward the lounge.
Time Skip – 6:55 pm
I rushed up the stairs to the second floor, hoping I wasn't too late. As I passed the elevator, it pinged. Lucy stepped out. "Hi, Natsu," she said, smiling. She looked amazing in jean shorts and a galaxy T-shirt.
"Hey Luce, ready to play some air hockey?" I asked as we walked to the game room.
"I'm ready to win, just so you know," she giggled. It was like listening to the most beautiful music in the world.
"Thanks for the warning, but trust me, Luce, it'll be me winning."
Lucy snorted. "Whatever you say, Natsu," she said, patting my arm mockingly.
The gaming room looked like a mini arcade. I'd forgotten we even had this in the building. In the middle was an air hockey table, and beside it, a small table with pizza and drinks. Mira and Emma had done good work.
"Hold it, Luce. If we're playing, we go by handbook rules. We need to flip a coin." I pulled a quarter from my wallet.
"Okay, flip," Lucy said, smiling. I tossed it, caught it, and placed my hand on it. "Tails."
I lifted my hand. "Ha, heads, you lose." Lucy stuck her tongue out. Gosh, she's cute.
"Fine. Pick a side or the puck first?" she asked.
"I'll take the puck, thank you very much," I said, swiping it from the middle.
"Then I'll take the right side. First to seven wins."
Time Skip – Six Games Later
We were tied: 3 games to 3, 6 points each. I had the puck; Lucy had scored the last point.
"Okay, Luce, this is it. Ready to lose?"
"To you? Never!" She replied cockily, arms crossed. I quickly looked away from her face, so determined, so beautiful.
I slammed my mallet into the puck, sending it toward her side. She reacted instantly, sending it back. This back-and-forth lasted two minutes until I spotted an opening. I angled the puck, hit it back toward her goal, and before she could react, it went in. Buzzer sounded. "Looks like you were wrong, Luce," I said, smiling. She rolled her eyes, sticking her tongue out playfully.
"You just got lucky! Next time, I'll kick your butt," she said, trying to glare but failing spectacularly.
I glanced at my watch. "We probably should head back; we've got work in the morning." I really didn't want this to end.
"Got it. Good night, Natsu. See you in the morning." She leaned up and kissed me on the cheek. "Had so much fun tonight! Can't wait for the next date." She walked out, leaving me speechless and red-faced.
Best. Day. Ever.
Mira's POV
I let out a loud squeal and grabbed Laxus's arm, pointing at the screen. "Did you see that?!" I jumped up and down.
"Yes, sweetie, I did," Laxus replied with a small smile. "Rogue fell asleep, so keep it down a bit."
"Emma, please tell me you got a picture of it," I whispered, letting go of my boyfriend's arm.
"Yep, we're good," Emma said, giving a thumbs-up from Rogue's lap. Rogue had fallen asleep soon after, but not before lifting Emma onto his lap.
"Now to write the first A to Z Dates article," I said, mock-saluting, "and you can work on the A to Z NaLu Dates Journal." I began typing.

Chapter 4: Date B: Bike Riding
Chapter Text
Lucy’s POV
I let out a sigh and glanced up at the clock ticking on the wall: 5:34. Why does time move so slowly when you’re waiting for something you’re excited about? Work wouldn’t let out until 6, and then I could finally get ready for my date with Natsu.
A date with Natsu. Just thinking about it made my heart race. Sure, I’d only been on one date with him before, but it was exciting, and Air Hockey wasn’t exactly the kind of date I’d normally imagine.
This “B” date, though, it probably topped the first. It was simple, old-fashioned, and fun: bike riding. I’d been looking forward to it for days, counting the hours since I got the email from Mira.
I admit it. I’ve liked Natsu ever since I met him. Somewhere along the way, that crush grew into something deeper. And while these “test” dates were for work, they were only going to make those feelings stronger. Not that Natsu knew or that he felt the same way. A buzz from my phone pulled me from my thoughts.
Emma: Hey, girly 💜
Me: Hi, what’s up, E?
Emma: Oh, nothing major… just bored 😑
Me: Why don’t you bug Rogue?
Emma: Would, but he and Sting are having a guys day out
Me: 😂😂😂
Emma: Don’t laugh. By the way, it’s past six, you should be getting ready for your date with Natsu.
Me: 😳 Crap you’re right!
Emma: See you later! And make sure to give Natsu a kiss for me 😂😂😂
Me: Shut up.
Emma: 😂
I grabbed my bag and sprinted down the hallway toward the parking structure.
Time Skip
I pulled into the park’s parking area and glanced around. The lamps were on, casting a soft glow along the paths. The stars were visible tonight, twinkling brightly. I’ve always loved stargazing. I even planned to study astronomy in college before life took a different turn, but I still loved looking up at the night sky.
“Luce!” a loud, smooth voice called, breaking my thoughts. Down the path came Natsu, pushing two bikes, grinning widely. He was wearing a T-shirt with flames that read “I’m Too Hot to Handle”, black basketball shorts, and red-and-black tennis shoes with flame socks.
“Hey, Natsu,” I jogged over, taking the yellow bike from him and swinging my leg over the seat. “Let’s get started.”
“You forgot something, Luce,” he said with a teasing smile.
I frowned. “What?”
“Safety first.” He placed a bike helmet on my head, buckling it with gentle fingers brushing my cheeks. I fought back a blush.
“Yeah… safety first,” I murmured, trying to act normal. He climbed onto his red bike, helmet askew, his pink hair sticking out in all directions. I couldn’t help giggling.
“So… want to race?” he asked, smirking.
“You’re on. First one around the park and back here wins.” I declared, adjusting myself on the bike. “Ready… Set… Go!” We tore down the path, the park mostly empty, which was probably for the best.
Time Skip: Last Stretch of the 11th Race
We were tied, 5 wins each. My legs were sore, my butt ached, and I was panting from exertion. Natsu looked just as exhausted. We were neck-and-neck, the finish line only ten feet away. Summoning all my energy, I pushed forward and barely crossed first.
I stopped, panting. “I win… and I’m done.” I unbuckled my helmet.
“You win… and me too,” Natsu said, removing his helmet and pushing back his sweaty hair. It was chilly, but we were both sticky with sweat.
I started to wobble, my legs turning to jelly, but a pair of warm arms caught me, pulling me into his chest. Natsu, always my hero. “Thank you,” I murmured into his chest.
“No problem,” he said, helping me steady myself. “Want me to take you home? I don’t want you driving like this.”
“If you could, that would be great,” I said, leaning on his arm. I should’ve stopped after the fifth race.
“Luce, it would be my honor,” he said, flashing that Natsu smile that made my heart pound. This date was amazing. I couldn’t wait for the next one.
Emma’s POV
“Cute!!!” I squealed, jumping up and down.
“So cute!!!!” Mira shouted, jumping around beside me. “He offered to take her home!”
“Who knew he was such a gentleman?” I commented, waving my hands around.
“Assuming the date went well?” I turned to see Laxus and Rouge standing in the doorway.
“It went fabulously!” Mira yelled, hugging Laxus, who blushed slightly. She’s the only girl who can make him do that, it made me happy to see her so excited and my brother so happy.
“Hey, doll,” Rouge said, kissing my cheek and pulling me into a hug.
“Hi.” I smiled, but my phone buzzed, reminding me about the A to Z Dates article. I pulled out of Rouge’s arms and ran to my laptop, Mira jumping into her chair behind me. The guys laughed and sat beside us, Rouge resting his head on my lap and snoring slightly. I giggled and started typing.

Chapter 5: Date C: Cooking Class
Chapter Text
Natsu’s POV
The smell of garlic and onions hit me the moment I stepped into the community cooking studio. Mira’s email said to meet Lucy at 6:30, and I was actually early. Happy perched on my shoulder, sniffing curiously at the stainless steel counters.
Lucy was already there, apron on, tying her hair back. She looked… perfect. The little strand of hair that had fallen on her cheek made me want to brush it away, but I didn’t want to overstep. At the end of the day, we are just best friends.
“Hey, Luce,” I said, trying to sound casual. “Ready to make something edible tonight?”
Lucy laughed, “As ready as I’ll ever be… but you know I’m not the best cook.”
“Yeah, I remember the birthday dinner you tried to make me last year.” I smirked. “You almost burned down your kitchen.”
Lucy rolled her eyes playfully, tying the apron around my waist. “Well, let's hope I have improved a bit since then.”
The instructor gave a quick rundown of the class: we’d be making a three-course meal, paired in teams. Luckily, the instructor paired us together. I glanced at Lucy, who grinned and shook her head. Perfect.
“Let’s not burn the kitchen down, okay?” she teased.
“Where’s the fun in that?” I replied, grabbing a knife and vegetables.
Time Skip
Halfway through chopping, I realized Lucy had the knife positioned awkwardly. “Here, let me show you,” I said, moving closer. My hand brushed hers as I guided the blade. I felt my face heating up.
“Thanks,” she murmured, eyes down. We laughed through the rest of the prep, occasionally bumping elbows or tasting each other’s sauces. I stole a few bites of hers when she wasn’t looking. She caught me once, face red, and smacked my arm.
“Natsu! You just ate my sauce!”
“You shouldn’t make it so good,” I shot back.
By the time the main course was in the oven, we were both covered in flour, laughing, and a little sweaty from the warm kitchen. The instructor complimented us on our teamwork, though I’m pretty sure she was only impressed that we hadn’t set anything on fire.
At the end, Lucy plated the food with a flourish, and I couldn’t stop staring at her smile. I wanted to tell her she looked amazing, but I swallowed the words and handed her the final dessert, a tiny chocolate tart.
“You want a taste?” she asked, holding it out. I leaned forward and gently took a bite and then smiled at her. “Not bad, but I think yours is better than mine.”
Lucy laughed, “Always trying to be sweet. You’re lucky you’re cute.”
I just grinned. Best. Date. Ever.
Mira & Emma’s POV
“Cute!!!” Emma squealed as she checked the photos Mira had taken. “They’re actually laughing together, like, really laughing!”
“I know, right?” Mira added, bouncing in her chair. “Lucy accidentally flicked flour at Natsu, and he tried to flick it back, but ended up with a face full of dough.”
Emma gave a thumbs up, “Perfect. Article gold.”

Chapter 6: Date D: Dance Lessons
Chapter Text
Lucy’s POV
I was buried in my laptop, trying to finish the last bit of the article review with Juvia by my side. She had been practically bouncing in her chare excited about the latest A to Z date updates. I talked to her after the first date, and since then she has been invested. I’m not positive at this point if it was because of our friendship, hopes of finally getting Gray on a date, or a mix of both.
“Lucy,” Juvia said, leaning over my shoulder, her blue hair brushing against my arm, “how did the latest dates go? Were they romantic?”
I snorted, trying not to blush as I sent the article off. “Well, they are going well. The bike ride well let's say Natsu and mine’s competitive streak came out full force. And the cooking was really nice; it brought out a side of Natsu I don’t see often. He is a really good cook.”
Juvia’s eyes sparkled, “Ahh, it sounds so exciting! Natsu, is he charming? He can’t be as charming is Gray.” She asked with a little dreamy sigh.
“Uh...yeah, something like that,” I mumbled, trying not to think too hard about it. I wasn’t the best at talking about my feelings out loud, and Juiva’s curious gaze didn’t help the matter much either.
A soft ping from my inbox made me jump slightly; it was Emma.
Hey Lucy
Your next date is a Dance Lesson! Don’t worry about fancy moves, just have fun. Meet Natsu at the Blue Ring dance studio at 7. Mira has you both signed up, so just give your names when you get there. If there are any issues, just give her a call!
Emma
I looked over at Juvia, “Looks like the next date is a dance lesson.”
Juvia clapped her hand together excitedly, “Ahhh, Lucy! This sounds like a wonderful date. Juvia would love to be able to go dancing on a date.”
“Don’t worry Juvia, I’m sure you will get to. And don’t worry I fill you in.” I reply, placing a hand on her shoulder and smiling.
Natsu’s POV
I glanced at the email from Emma and nearly dropped my pencil. Dance lesson? With Luce? I could feel my face beginning to burn. Dance? Me? I can barely keep rhythm while walking, let along dancing.
Still, it was going to be a date with Lucy, and that makes the inevitable embarrassment worth it. I swung my bag over my shoulder and grabbed Happy. “Time to learn how to dance and hopefully not fall on my face.” I muttered.
When I arrived at the dance studio, Lucy was already waiting, looking cute it a pastel tank top and leggings. I could feel my brain short-circuiting looking at her. “Hey, Luce” I greeted trying to sound cool, “Ready to dance with the best?”
Lucy raised an eyebrow and smirked, “The best? We’ll see about that.” I chuckled and walked into the classroom with her.
Lucy’s POV
The dance instructor greeted us warmly and led us to the floor. “Okay, everyone, just follow along. Don’t worry if you mess up! It is all part of the learning process.” She said clapping her hands together.
Natsu immediately took my hand and my heat skipped. “Ready?” He asked, grin wide.
“As ready as I’ll ever be,” I replied, trying to act confident.
We started with simple steps, but Natsu’s feet seemed to have minds of their own. He kept stepping on my toes, spinning the wrong way, and somehow managing to bump into me at the just the right moments.
“Careful, Natsu,” I giggled, adjusting his posture, “Not that way!”
“I’m...uh... following the rhythm!” he protested with a smile on his face as he spun me around. “See? I’ve got this! I’m a natural.”
I gave him a small eye roll, “You’re a natural at messing up all the steps, might be more accurate.”
We both laughed and as Natsu spun me again I could feel myself losing my footing slipping. Natsu may not be the best at coordinating dancing, but he was very quick on his feet. He caught me, pulling me closer to him. We stayed like that longer than was intended and upon realizing how close our faces were, I could feel my cheeks turning a darker shade. But his did too.
By the end of the lesson, we were out of breath, laughing, and covered in sweat. I couldn’t stop smiling.
‘You know,” Natsu said, brushing hair from my face, “you’re actually...kind of good at this,”
“I think you’re just lucky to have me as partner, who else would put in their feet getting stepped on most of the night.” I tease, bumping his shoulder lightly.
“Luck? Pfft. I’m amazing,” he said, grinning like a fool. “But maybe you’re my lucky charm.” I looked at him grinning, lucky charm? My heart did a fluttering thing once again.
Mira & Emma’s POV
“Those are so cute!” Emma squealed from her chair in the office, looking throught the photos Mira somehow taken. “Think I could talk Rogue into taking a dance class with me? It looks like fun.”
“I bet you could, he would do just about anything you ask.” Mira replied already typing up the next article. “What about Laxus?”
“He has taken dance classes since he was a kid. He could teach dance at this point.” Emma replied while still looking through the photos.
Mira’s head shoot up, “Your kidding?”
“Nope, he is really good, like won competitions good.”
“Oh, we are so going dancing on our next date.”

Natsu’s POV
I was halfway through a bag of spicy barbecue chips and trying to finish a write-up on last night’s college volleyball canonship when Gray burst into the room, already scowling like I had set fire to his pants.
“Oi, flame brain, did you steal my pen again?”
I look down, the pen is in my hand, it was a blue with snowflakes, definitely from Juvia. “Nope.” I say, shoving the pen into my pocket before he can grab it. I’ll put it back later.
Gray rolls his eyes and mutters something about “juvenile salamanders” before dropping into a chair across from me. Happy is curled up on my lap, snoring like a chainsaw. Before Gray can nag me again, the door slams open so hard the wall shakes.
Mire and Emma strut in like they are announcing the winners of a championship. “Congratulations!” Emma declares dramatically.
Gray freezes mid-sip of his coffee, and I about choke on chip as we both turn to look at the two of them. “For what?” Gray asks suspiciously, “Do I need to run now?”
Mira beams, “You two are going on Date E!”
I raise a brow, “Uh Mira, I’m not going on a date with the Ice Princess over here. The ‘A to Z Dates’ thing, that's supposed to be me and Luce.”
“Well you aren’t going on date with Gray per se,” Emma pipes in, “The only escape room available tonight only allows four people.”
I blink.
Gray blinks. “Four... people?” Gray repeats slowly.
Mira nods excitedly, “Yes, so you and Juiva will be joining Natsu and Lucy.”
Gray sputters so hard I worry he is about the kill over, “W-wait... Why me? And why...”
“Because” Emma cuts him off with a sweet but terrifying smile, “Juvia has already agreed, and you have nothing going on tonight anyways.”
“I could have plans.” Gray protests.
“Well of course you do, you are going to an escape room tonight. And if you don’t, I can and will set Juiva up with Lyon instead. I’m sure he would LOVE to go on a date with Juvia.”
Gray quickly went ridged, glaring at Emma for a second. “Fine, just don’t get Leon involved. I’ll go.”
“Good, glad that is settled. I’ll send you both the details in a bit. Have fun tonight!” Mira said clapping her hands together. And with that both of them left.
“So not a fan of Lyon, going on a date with Juvia.” I said, smirking, any chance I could get to mess with Gray I would be taking.
Gray let out a huff, “He just isn’t good enough for her.”
“So, you are?”
“Shut up Flamefreak.”
TIME SKIP
By the time Gray and I reached the escape room lobby, he looked like he was attending his own funeral. Juvia on the other hand, was bouncing like she won the lottery.
“Gray-sama and Juvia... trapped together solving puzzles.... a date of destiny!” She gushes while Gray makes a sound like a dying fish.
I was about to make fun of him, but Lucy walked in and suddenly teasing Gray didn’t matter anymore. She’s wearing jeans and white off-the-shoulder top with the Leo constellation on it; her hair clipped back, face glowing under the soft lobby lights. She looked so pretty.
“Hey Natsu!” She says with that smile that hits me like a punch to the chest.
I play it cool, well at least try to. “Hey Luce! Ready to break out of prison?”
She laughs, “It’s a haunted library, not a prison.”
“Oh, same thing.” She giggles again and I swear I feel myself floating,
The escape room host comes over, gives us the usual speech about clues and rules, then smiles at Lucy. “You look like the clever type, I bet you’ll lead the group.”
My hand instinctively goes around Lucy’s waist, “Yeah, she’s the clever one,” I say proudly and a bit possessively. Gray raises an eyebrow, Juvia giggles a bit, and Lucy’s cheeks turn pink.
Smooth, Dragneel, real smooth.
Inside the Room
The room is dim, lit by fake candles and old dusty lamps. The walls are lined with eerie bookshelves, fake cobwebs, and creepy portraits with eyes that follow you around.
Lucy gasps excitedly, “This is so cool!”
Juvia clasps her hands, “Juvia feels like she had entered a horror romance novel with Gray-sama.” Gray trips over a fake skull and I about cry from laughing so much.
The Book on the Wall
Lucy looks down at the first clue we found, “Okay guys. The clue says, ‘Knowledge opens all.’ We need to...Natsu NO DON’T RIP THE BOOK OFF THE SHELF!”
“It looked suspicious.”
“It’s glued to the wall, flame brain.”
“That’s even more suspicious, ice freak.” Lucy grabs my wrist gently and I shut up.
Gray snickers, “Whipped.” I flip him off once Lucy attention is turned else were. Lucy is able to find the next clue in less than a minute. She is so brilliant.
The High Shelf
“Look like something up there...” Lucy murmurs, squinting. Before she can even ask, I kneel and motion for her to step onto my hands.
“Up you go!” She squeaks, like actually squeaks.
“Natus! You don’t have to.”
“I gotcha ya.” I lift her easily; her hand rests on top of my head while she laughs a bit. I feel like my heart is about to beat out of my chest. She grabs the next clue, and I set her down gently.
Our faces are really close now; she turns as pink as my hair, and I do too. Gray coughs loudly while catching Juvia who starts swooning
Jump Scare
A loud, echoing BOOM shakes the room when I accidentally lean on a pressure tile. I shriek, like a full-grown adult man shriek, it sounded nothing like a little kid. “I did NOT scream,” I sputtered out trying to recover.
Lucy and Juvia are supporting each other as they are laughing, and Gray is on the floor wheezing.
This date is going great.
Final Puzzle
“TIME REMAINING: 3 MINUTES”
Lucy spreads the pieces across the table, “Okay, Gray assemble these. Juvia, hold the lantern. Natsu, when I say pull, pull that lever.”
Gray grumbles, “Why do you get to be the leader?”
“Cause she is the smartest.” I snap back while smiling at Lucy who gave me a small eye roll but still smiles back.
“Ready, Natsu NOW!” I yank the lever, the last lock clicks, and the door swings open. “We did it!”
Juvia cheers and Gray is smiling down at her. Lucy jumps up and down excitedly, and I pull her into a hug. We hugged for what feels like seconds but was probably a minute, realizing this I let her go.
“Sorry about that Luce.”
She shakes her head, smiling softly, “No it's okay, I enjoyed it.” I might pass out.
As we walk out of the building, Gray and Juvia are arguing playfully about which puzzle was the best. Lucy is walking beside me, close enough for our hands to brush every few steps.
My thoughts go back to the escape room as Lucy gets in her car and I wave goodbye. The teamwork and laughter. Her smile and how her hand feels in mine.
I think I want more dates like this, not for the article, not for Mira and Emma, but for us, for real.
Emma’s POV
“OH. MY. GOSH!” I shriek, slamming my hands on the table so hard Rouge jumps from his seat where he had by writing.
“Everything okay, love?” He asks, leaning over to see what I was looking at.
“Yes, everything it perfect.” I point to the screen gesturing for Mira to come and look.
Mira leans forward, her eyes sparking like she’s about to ascend to shipper heaven. “Rewind it, rewind it!” She orders, practically vibrating in her chair. On-screen the moment repeats: Lucy squeals when the final lock clicks open, jumps into the airs and Natsu quickly hugs her like it was the most natural thing. “I knew it! I knew they were one good jump away from physical contact!”
Laxus, sitting on the couch behind us, punches the bride of his nose, “You two are gonna rupture something before the article even gets to Z.”
“Oh hush,” Mira says, waving him off. “We’re conducting important scientific observations.”
Rouge nods bumping my should playfully, “Yes, important, very scientific.” He says with a chuckle.
I stick my tongue out, before rewinding the video further. This time, Natsu and his very not girly scream.
Laxus chokes on his drink, “Was that?”
“Yep, that was Natsu Dragneel shreiking.” I say replaying the clip.
“You have to get me a copy of that.” Laxus says suddenly, taking much more interest, “Is there anything else.
Rogue pipes in snicking, “Gray running into the walling trying to escape the animatronic skeleton was pretty good too.”
“Oh, give me that one too.”
“Sure, bro I can do that.” I give Laxus a thumbs up.
Mira pulls back up her laptop, “Ready Black Cat?”
“Always, Barista.” I roll my shoulders, and she cracks her knuckles dramatically, “Let’s fangirl professionally.”

Chapter 8: Date F: Fishing
Chapter Text
Lucy’s POV
The Fiore Journal cafeteria was unusually quiet for once. Most people were either out chasing stories or holed up in their offices, which made it the perfect place to eat lunch without someone shouting about deadlines.
Juvia and I had claimed our usual table by the windows, trays in front of us. I poked half-heartedly at my salad while Juvia stirred her soup, watching me far too closely. “Lucy,” she said sweetly, dangerously sweetly, “you have not touched your food.”
“I am touching it,” I replied defensively, nudging a tomato with my fork.
“Barely,” Juvia hummed. “Is Lucy perhaps… distracted?”
I sighed. I should’ve known this was coming. “It was just an escape room,” I said quickly. “That’s it.”
Juvia’s eyes sparkled. “Ah, yes. Just an escape room with Natsu.”
“And Gray,” I added. “And you.”
“Yes,” Juvia nodded seriously, “but Gray-sama was clearly irrelevant to Lucy’s emotional spiral.”
“I was not spiraling!”
Juvia leaned forward, lowering her voice dramatically. “Lucy blushed when Natsu put his arm around her.”
“I did not.”
“You did,” she said cheerfully. “And when he lifted Lucy up, her heart rate visibly increased.”
“That is not something you can see.”
“Juvia can sense these things.”
I groaned and dropped my fork. “It was just… teamwork. That’s all.”
Juvia smiled softly, less teasing now. “You smiled more yesterday than Juvia has seen in weeks.”
That made me pause. I thought back to the escape room, the laughter, the way Natsu had stayed close without hovering, how safe I felt with him there. How natural it all was. “He was really supportive,” I admitted quietly. “He didn’t make fun of me or take over. He just… trusted me.”
Juvia nodded. “Natsu respects Lucy.”
My cheeks warmed. “It’s not like that.”
Juvia tilted her head. “Lucy,” she said gently, “Juvia did not say anything.” I groaned again, but a smile tugged at my lips. “So,” Juvia continued casually, “what is the next date?”
I glanced at my phone. “Fishing. Early. Like… painfully early. I swear Mire is trying to kill me, I’m not a morning person”
Juvia gasped. “A morning date?! That is incredibly intimate!”
“It’s not,” I protested. “It’s just sitting by a lake.”.
“Alone. Quiet. With Natsu,” Juvia added. “Lucy, that is how confessions happen in romance novels.”
I nearly choked on my drink. “That is not happening.”
Juvia laughed, clearly pleased. “Juvia will expect updates.”
I stood, grabbing my tray. “You’ll get nothing.”
Juvia smiled knowingly. “Juvia will get everything.”
As I walked away, I couldn’t help thinking about the lake. The quiet. Natsu. And how, for some reason, my heart was already beating a little faster.
The next morning came far too quickly. I was still half-asleep when I pulled into the parking area by Magnolia Lake. The sun hadn’t fully risen yet, the sky painted in soft pinks and golds that reflected off the water. A thin layer of mist hovered above the lake, making everything feel hushed, like the world hadn’t woken up yet.
Part of me wondered if this was Mira’s idea of torture. The other part of me was excited.
I spotted Natsu sitting on the edge of the dock, a thermos beside him and fishing rods leaning against the railing. He was wearing a hoodie and jeans, his pink hair messier than usual, eyes a little tired but bright when he noticed me.
“Morning, Luce,” he said, voice low and warm.
“Morning,” I replied, smiling despite myself. “You look… awake.”
“Barely,” he admitted with a yawn. “But worth it.” That did something to my chest. He handed me a cup from the thermos. “Coffee. I figured we’d both need it.”
“You’re officially my favorite person today,” I said, taking a grateful sip.
We sat side by side on the dock, the wood cool beneath us, the lake quiet except for the occasional ripple. It felt different from our other dates. No competition. No loud laughter. Just… calm.
“I didn’t know you liked fishing,” I said after a moment.
“I don’t,” Natsu replied easily. “But Happy does.” Happy chirped happily from the tackle box before turning back to the water to watch for fish. I laughed, relaxing more than I realized I’d needed to.
We set up our lines together. I struggled with the bait, making a face. “Need help?” Natsu asked.
“Yes. Please. Before I accidentally hook myself,” I said, handing it over quickly. He chuckled and took care of it, then passed the rod back. Our fingers brushed, and I felt a small spark run up my arm. I pretended to focus very hard on the water.
Time passed slowly, but not in a bad way. We talked quietly, about work, about random things, about nothing at all. Sometimes we just sat there, listening to the birds and watching the sun climb higher.
“This is nice,” I said softly.
“Yeah,” Natsu agreed. “It is.”
My line suddenly tugged, and I gasped. “Natsu. I think something’s on it!”
“Okay, okay,” he said, jumping up. “Easy, Luce. Reel it in slow.” I tried, but the rod jerked again, and I nearly lost my grip. Without thinking, Natsu stepped behind me, placing his hands over mine to guide the reel. “There you go,” he murmured. “You’ve got it.”
My heart started racing. He was so close I could feel his breath near my ear, his chest solid and warm against my back. For a moment, the lake, the fish, everything else faded away. When I finally reeled it in, a small fish, but still a success, I laughed, breathless. “I caught one!”
“We caught one,” he corrected. He let go slowly, like he didn’t quite want to. I turned to face him, our smiles lingering a little too long. My cheeks felt warm, and judging by the way he looked away, his probably were too.
Happy, however, had his full attention locked on the fish dangling from the line. He was two seconds away from pouncing. “Hey!” Natsu laughed, quickly unhooking the fish and placing it in front to the blue cat, who immediately began chomping down like he’d just won the lottery.
Later, we sat with our feet dangling in the water, sharing snacks and watching Happy attempt to “fish” with his paws.
“I’m glad this was the date today,” I said quietly.
Natsu glanced at me. “Yeah?”
“Yeah. It’s… peaceful,” I admitted. “Sometimes it feels like everything’s moving so fast.”
He nodded. “Guess it’s okay to slow down once in a while.”
Our hands rested on the dock beside each other. So close they almost touched.
Almost.
When it was time to leave, I stood and brushed my jeans off, feeling oddly reluctant. “Thanks for today,” I said. “I really had fun.”
Natsu smiled soft, “Me too, Luce.”
As I walked back to my car, I glanced over my shoulder once. He was still standing on the dock, watching me go. And for the first time, I wondered if maybe, just maybe, these dates weren’t just for the article anymore.
Mira & Emma’s POV
“They were quiet,” Emma whispered, zooming in on the footage, her eyes glued to the screen.
“No chaos,” Mira continued, leaning closer. “No yelling. No competitive nonsense.”
“No screaming,” Emma added. “Not even when Happy nearly stole the fish.”
Mira gasped softly, pointing at the screen. “Pause it. Pause it right there.” Emma froze the frame. Lucy and Natsu stood close on the dock, hands inches apart, neither of them looking at the lake anymore. “They almost held hands,” Mira breathed.
“Almost is a crime at this point,” Emma muttered. “I swear, if one of them had sneezed, it would’ve happened.”
Mira slumped back in her chair dramatically. “Do you realize what this means?”
Emma sighed. “They’re comfortable in silence.”
“That’s endgame behavior,” Mira said firmly.
Emma rewound the clip again, watching Natsu help Lucy reel in the fish. “He didn’t tease her once.”
“And she didn’t roll her eyes,” Mira added.
They exchanged a look. “Oh no,” Emma said slowly.
“Oh yes,” Mira replied.
“They’re not just flirting anymore,” Emma continued. “They’re bonding.”
Mira nodded, eyes shining. “This isn’t a date-date. This is a ‘we could do this every weekend and be happy’ date.”
Emma shut the laptop with finality. “I’m calling it now. Fishing is a turning point.”
Mira raised her fist. “Date F for Feelings.”
From the couch, Laxus glanced over without looking up from his phone. “You two look like you just discovered fire.”
Mira and Emma, in perfect unison, “WE BASICALLY DID.”
