Work Text:

Breathe in for luck, they said. It works.

So that’s what Chifuyu did — breathe in, breathe out, repeat.

And yet it feels as though the statement itself was only a mere prank told to people who are gullible as him. He has been doing the torturous process for some time now, and luck was still nowhere near his grasp.

But just for good measure, he kept going at it.

Breathe in. Breathe out. Repeat.

He felt rather than see the snort that was coming, considering how the room was in total darkness aside from the light that illuminated from his phone screen, and was quick to shush you out. “Stop it.”

There was some snickering before it was back to utter silence, tugging the corners of his lips upwards with how obliging and cute you were being around him. “Right. What were you doing again?”

“I’m manifesting luck.”

“By hyperventilating?” You pressed, voice sweetened with mischief.

“By breathing,” he corrected. Although, there’s also mirth lingering behind his reprimanding voice as well. “Please stop teasing me,” he almost begged.

This time, you gasped, acting offended that he would even think so, and Chifuyu couldn’t help it anymore — he belt out a laugh. “You didn’t even deny it!”

“Okay! I am,” you said, giggling with him. “Why would you need luck though? It’s not as if I’m going to bite.”

“It’s not that,” he tried explain.

Because this wasn’t what I had in mind, is what he wanted to say. He wanted to bring you to the festival for your first date, have fun hopping from one stall to another, eating random foods, watching the fireworks, and maybe even kiss you breathless by the end of it.

Yet here are the two of you, sitting side by side on his very compact couch, your bottom almost sitting on his already numbing leg.

It’s not that he didn’t particularly like this, he likes it very much. But he wanted to leave a good impression on you since it’s both of your first time going out together after all.

And first dates, according to his knowledge, will firmly set the consecutive ones. That is, if there’s going to be another for him.

Groaning, he cursed the damn the storm, and the sudden blackout on his dorm building.

“Chifuyu? Chifuyu? Chifuyu!”

Snapping back to reality, his eyes re-adjusted to his inky room, zeroing in on the blaring light of his phone which was playing an old song to keep the two of you company.

He hears you hum alongside the low tune, and he thought how he should just make the best out of this, get you to say yes to another date and by then, he would make it his life’s mission to plan a better one.

So Chifuyu carefully extended his arm, putting it around the back of his worn out couch, hand hovering over your clothed shoulder. “You know this song?”

“Very much so.” And it surprised him, when you leaned your head to his shoulder, almost as if you’re very comfortable with him doing this all the while answering his query. “I grew up listening to that band. You?”

Ah. How could you even be more perfect? The same band, really? He didn’t hesitate anymore when he pulled you towards his warm chest, nostrils getting invaded with the intoxicating scent of your perfume, and his supple lips almost took place at your temple, whispering how it was the same thing for him too.

“Your heart’s beating really fast,” you suddenly pointed out. Yes, Chifuyu could feel it. Pounding hard inside his ribcage, urging him to do something more — better than just this. He was also certain that this physical contact, cuddling or whatever it was the two of you were comfortably doing, was sending his other senses to overdrive.

Oh God, how he wanted to kiss your lips right then and there.

But Chifuyu was reluctant. He was somehow worried he wouldn’t know when to stop once he started. More so, terrified that you wouldn’t hold back too. It was as if the air around you was electrified, the ambience being so enticing that he didn’t have the restraint left in him to stop his mouth from mumbling low in the shell of your ear. “Yours too, you know?”

He felt you shiver with the way his voice sounded so deep, huddling tighter against him, and he took this chance to hold your other hand with his free one, stroking the smooth skin that was as soft as the leg that grazed his own. He couldn’t help the searing want that jumpstarted his bloodstream, trailing the hand that was caressing you upwards to your forearms, finally setting them on your jaw.

Fuck this. He’s just gonna kiss you here.

Ping!

You sprang up, awakened from his magnetic allure because of the sudden notification on his phone. Chuckling sheepishly and moving away an inch, deeming that it was spacious enough to clear your heavily tempted mind. While Chifuyu could only grunt, eyelids closing shut with much annoyance to whoever texted him during the most important moment of his life.

Ping! Ping!

“Uh,” he heard you utter. And Chifuyu knew the kindling fire that was simmering between the two of you was now gone. “Can I use your washroom?”

“Yeah. Of course. It’s the door to the left.”

“I know,” you breathed once you stood up. “I’ve been here, dumbass.” Before making your blind way to the said room.

Oh. Right. The study sessions.

When he finally heard the washroom door closing, he swiftly swiped his irritating phone from its position on the coffee table, blue eyes immediately glaring at the names that flashed on the screen.

Baji-san: “So did u get some???”

Kazutora-kun: “Chifuyu dont listen to baji”

Kazutora-kun: “But did u get some?????”

Running a palm across his frustrated face, it was clear these two only wanted the saucy details. As if he would tell them.

There was no way in hell he would tell them.

So now that he was thinking of a rude response, his mind suddenly thought if he even has ‘protection’ in his possession. Wait. Did he really have some?

Rummaging through his memory, he didn’t feel you come back beside him until you tapped his puffed out cheek, refreshed and fully resolved. “Penny for your thoughts?”

“I’m not sure if I have a condom in here somewhere,” he mused out loud. Upon realizing what he just said, his head whipped towards you so fast, silky black hair whooshing around, even his blue eyes were an absolute surprise seeing it managed to stay inside his skull.

The revelation made him a little dizzy. Blood rushing to his head and pure embarrassment engulfing his whole being, making him at a loss for words whilst you giggle at his salacious antics.

And Chifuyu didn’t know if it was a good thing that you laughed at him, but he deemed it was better than having you silent and completely disgusted. “I— It’s not— I’m not going to— I mean—”

“I know.” He felt you pat his thigh, somehow assuring him that it didn’t bother you, not one bit, and igniting his already flustered self to jump at the innocent contact you initiated.

“I’m sorry,” he croaked, which you dismissed again with another lighthearted snort.

“I’m sorry too. But I have to go home now.” Showing him the time on your phone, he remembered that you did have a curfew on your own building. It’s somehow upsetting how the night turned out like this, but what else could he do?

Standing up, he beamed instead, hiding his own disappointment with a bright smile that told you your time together was still memorable for him, even though everything was all just impromptu on his part. “Let me walk you home,” he almost demanded.

“Okay.” Chifuyu realized from the coldness of your skin that you were interlacing your fingers with his, giving him hope that maybe it wasn’t as bad as he thought. So he grasped your hand tighter, warming it with his larger one. “Take me home, Matsuno-san.”

Outside, the streets have puddles of water everywhere. And he watched you skip on every one of them, wearing a soft smile on your face all the while holding his hand. It made Chifuyu fall for you even more — how easy it was to get lost in time when spent together, how your face was like an open book that he would never get tired reading of, how you make his blood run fiery and calm all at the same time.

He almost wanted to take the longer route to your dorm just to savor some more of these precious moments.

But who was he to deny fate? All good things must come to an end anyway.

“Oh no, is the gate locked?” You asked once you reached your building’s gate. From his perspective, it wasn’t. He could easily wretch the whole thing out. Is this how secure your building is? Maybe he should ask you to live with him. That’s not much of a bad idea.

However, the worry that creased on your face didn’t settle with him at all. So he let go of your hand, asked you to wait for a moment before jumping through the high fence to nick the useless lock down.

He opened it with a flourish, bowing like a formal butler once you passed him by, inciting hushed laughters from the two of you. “Welcome home, Madam.”

“Thank you,” you noted. Fluttering your eyelashes as if a high noble that was just being transferred by a carriage. “I have arrived safe and well.”

Grinning as well, you properly thanked him again with Chifuyu returning the same wide smile. Yet he was feeling deflated for some known reasons, and he knew that the yearning was sitting evident in his irises. “So, I guess this is good night?”

“Yeah,” you murmured. “Good night.”

He then nodded, waited for you to turn around so he could put back the lock on the gate in its approved manner. That’s why it outright surprised him when you stepped in his personal space, wrapping your arms securely around his waist.

“I had fun tonight,” you whispered against his skin. “I really did.”

Chifuyu didn’t waste a second and grabbed the opportunity, returning your embrace and asking you right away if there was a slim chance to have another date. “Does this mean I can take you out again?”

What he expected was an answer. A vocal one.

So he didn’t expect at all when your lips planted oh so tenderly against his.

He could see with the way his eyes were blown out wide, how your own ones were tightly closed, eyelashes sitting so pretty against the smoothness of your cheek, and your soft lips that moved so gently compelling his eyelids to flutter shut and answer your kiss as purely as it was.

It was startling, tingling the very tips of his fingers down to his toes, letting his heart do the somersaults that were just painfully at bay earlier, and giving in to his need to show it through his actions.

You were finally kissing him.

And he was kissing you.

“A second date would be nice,” you murmured out of a sudden against his lips. “And a third,” a peck. “And a fourth,” another kiss on the corner of his mouth. “And a—”

He swallowed your words with a deeper kiss of his own, smiling when he felt you melting once more in the tightness of his embrace.

And for Chifuyu, this day was the best day he could ever ask for even if it’s all impromptu for him. Hands down.
