“Daichi.”
“Yes, love?”
The innocence in Daichi’s voice frustrates him. “What are we doing?”
“You’ll see.”
Tooru huffs, “When?”
“Soon,” Daichi’s smile worms its way through his words and into Tooru’s heart. “I promise.”
Tooru takes a deep breath before slowly releasing it and sticks his hand out. Daichi’s hand takes Tooru’s, and Tooru lets him maneuver him out of the car.
Tooru rolls his eyes under the blindfold and grumbles, “Not soon enough.”
Daichi laughs, and Tooru doesn’t bother trying to hide his smile.
Tooru hears the car lock, and then Daichi’s hands are on Tooru’s thighs. Tooru shrieks of laughter at the sudden sensation of being picked up, and he instinctively wraps his legs around his boyfriend’s waist.
“Do you trust me?”
The words are a gentle whisper in his ear, and he shivers from the sensation. “With everything.”
Tooru is pleasantly surprised when Daichi's gentle lips meet his cheek, and he hums in appreciation. “If you’re spoiling me like this all night, then I have no further complaints.”
Daichi snorts, “How gracious of you.”
When they get to the door, Daichi drops one of his hands to pull his keys out of his pocket and unlocks the door.
“This does not feel creepy at all, Daichi.”
“Do you trust me?”
There’s a very subtle hint of insecurity to his voice, which he knows Tooru catches. “Daichi-”
“Shoes off.”
Tooru huffs before complying with Daichi’s demand. Daichi follows his lead, deciding to leave the shoes as they fall and fix them later.
He leads Tooru out of the genkan and to their living room.
“Okay,” Daichi trails off, looking around him. “Don’t-” He reaches out to stop Tooru’s hands from pulling the blindfold off, “Don’t take it off just yet.”
“Come on, Dai. What is-”
“Give me thirty seconds.”
Daichi anxiously waits as Tooru swishes his mouth in thought. “Fine.”
He smiles, pressing a quick kiss to Tooru’s lips. “Thank you.”
Tooru’s cheeks fill with pink, the surprise kiss disarming and flustering, “Yeah, yeah.”
Daichi smiles and turns around, sure that Tooru will listen and won’t take his blindfold off, and starts setting up his last-minute touches.
Once he deems it ready, he turns back to Tooru.
“Are you ready?”
“I’ve been ready since you put this blindfold on, love.”
“On the count of three.”
“One.”
“Two.”
“Thr-”
Tooru lifts his blindfold off before the countdown ends, blinking his eyes to adjust to seeing again.
He looks around him, eyes wide, “Daichi... What…?”
Tooru trails off, eyes filled with awe.
While Tooru had been at practice earlier that day, Daichi had been redoing their home. Well, he had Suga and Iwaizumi with him to help him move some things around.
They had carefully moved the two couches in their living room, so they faced away from each other, creating a mini valley, then moved the mattress from Daichi and Tooru’s room to fit just between the two. Suga had used a fitted sheet to cover the top, and Daichi grabbed all of their thickest blankets, as well as their pillows and Tooru’s favorite blankets, and had laid them out over the mattress. It forms a plush and fluffy nest, big enough for the two of them.
Along with creating the best blanket fort ever, he had Iwaizumi’s help with gluing glow-in-the-dark stars of Tooru’s favorite constellations and Tooru’s portable 3-D moon lamp and strung some string through it to hang it from their ceiling as well.
“What is this?”
Tooru looks at Daichi with completely unguarded eyes, which always trips Daichi up. Tooru is so rarely unguarded, and when he does drop his guard around Daichi, it always makes Daichi feel as if he is suddenly walking upside down.
Daichi looks away from Tooru, face heating up and his hands sliding to hide in his front pockets. “I uh,” he clears his throat, then looks back at Tooru. “I felt bad that we couldn’t go to the planetarium last weekend, so I decided to bring it here to you instead.”
Suddenly, Daichi stumbles backward, arms instinctively reaching up to catch his boyfriend.
Tooru buries his face in Daichi’s neck, and Daichi hears a sniffle, which causes his mind to ring in alarm. “Tooru?” He tries pulling back, “Are you okay?”
Daichi feels Tooru’s arms squeeze around his neck, and he sighs, tightening his arms around Tooru’s waist.
Tooru mumbles something indiscernible into his shoulder.
“Hm?”
“I said,” Tooru turns his face to whisper into Daichi’s ear, “You’re so damn cute.”
Daichi shudders at the feeling, releasing his boyfriend and moving to sit in the blanket fort. “Are you coming?”
“Give me one second,” Tooru calls back, already heading to their bedroom.
“Alright, but hurry,” Daichi responds. “Don’t want the food to get cold.”
“It won’t!”
Daichi rolls his eyes and smiles fondly, knowing he probably will take a little longer. He pulls out his phone, pulling up the website to their favorite shop and placing their order. Soon, the food is on its way, and Daichi hears the water running. He leans back in the blankets, deciding to scroll through his messages and update Suga on how everything is going.
Suga [19:23]: whats happening?? did you ask?????
Daichi [19:37]: just got home, he’s in the shower now
Suga [19:38]: has he seen stitch yet?
Daichi [19:38]: no, not yet
Suga [19:39]: ill let you go!! good luck!!
A fuzzy black face nudges his phone, and Daichi looks over with a smile. “Hey, I was just talking about you.”
He drops his phone, picking up the walking cotton ball that Tooru had brought home from practice one day. He smiles fondly at the memory, knowing from the beginning that moving in with Tooru would always be an adventure.
Tooru had come home, holding his bag to his chest, slightly angled away from Daichi.
“Hi love, welcome back!”
“Hey, baby.”
Daichi had walked over to give Tooru a greeting kiss but had frowned when Tooru kept his body turned away from him.
“Is everything alright?”
Tooru smiled sweetly, “Of course. Why would anything be wrong?”
Tooru brushed past Daichi on his way to do his nightly post-practice routine. He was almost at the door. So close, when a loud meow had sounded from his bag.
Daichi probably would have thought Matsukawa had changed Tooru’s phone ringtone again had he not watched how Tooru’s steps faltered before quickly resuming.
“What was that?”
Daichi had followed Tooru to their bedroom.
“What was what?” Tooru’s back was faced away, his bag in front of him, still hidden from Daichi’s view.
“It sounded like-”
“Meow.”
“-a cat.” Daichi narrowed his eyes.
“It’s not a -”
“Tooru, did you bring home a cat ?”
Tooru faced him, blinked innocently, “No?”
Daichi sighed, rubbing the bridge of his nose, “Where are we-”
“Daichi, we can’t get rid of him!”
“Tooru-”
“Daichi, he’s so cute!”
The fuzzball was shoved into Daichi’s face, and the bag had finally fallen.
“Look!”
Daichi took the kitten from Tooru’s outstretched hands, wanting to hold it more than 2 inches away from his face.
“Okay, Daichi.” Tooru began. “I know you’re mad-”
“I’m not mad.” Daichi crossed his arms, holding the kitten in his palm with one hand and letting it rest in his elbow.
“-but this little baby was outside of the gym, and he was alone! How could I just leave him there?” He was getting more heated as he went on. “And look, I’ll take care of him! I’ll- I’ll take him to the vet in the morning, I’ll feed him, I’ll- uh, I’ll get him toys.”
“Tooru.”
“What?”
“What’d you name him?”
Tooru had blinked owlishly, “What’d I what… Oh! Stitch.”
His smile was so bright that Daichi had to glance down at the tiny furball that had curled up into his inner elbow and was now purring.
Daichi hadn’t been against having a pet of any kind, but they had agreed that they probably didn’t have the space for one yet. He knew that as soon as Tooru had a plan in mind, that it wasn’t worth trying to fight him on it, knowing he had already lost. He didn’t mind losing to Tooru, though, not when it was about something that made him smile like that.
“Daichi.”
“Yes?”
“Why did you steal my cat.”
“You gave him to me; he’s mine now.” Daichi stuck his tongue out at his boyfriend before turning and shielding the kitten with his body.
That night had dissolved into their first competition to see who could get their new cat to like them more.
“I still can’t believe you stole my cat from me.”
Daichi snorts, broken out of his trance at the age-old argument, “You gave him-”
“Did you put him in a costume?”
Daichi looks up at Tooru, then down at Stitch, who's wearing a little Stitch onesie. Up at Tooru. Back down to Stitch. He looks at Tooru one last time with a cheeky smile.
“He likes it.”
Tooru rolls his eyes before climbing into the fort and curling on his side against Daichi. He rests his head on Daichi’s shoulder.
“How was your shower?”
“Mmm,” Tooru hums, reaching up to pet Stitch between his ears. “It was nice. Is the food on its way?”
Daichi turns his head to press a kiss on Tooru’s forehead, “Yeah, should be here any minute.”
Tooru nods, settling his head on Daichi’s shoulder. Daichi wraps his free arm around Tooru’s shoulder, fingers coming to comb through his damp hair.
The two fall into quiet conversation while picking out a movie to watch. Tooru decides they should watch Spirited Away just in time for their doorbell to ring, and Daichi stands up to get it.
He brings Stitch, holding him like a baby and ignoring Tooru’s protests that he stole the cat. He takes the food with a thank you and locks the door behind him.
Daichi takes the food to the kitchen to pull everything out of the bag and takes a quick second to attach something to Stitch’s collar, making sure it falls at the base of Stitch’s neck. He lets the cat go free and grabs their food before making his way back to the fort and settling back in next to Tooru.
Tooru turns the movie on, settling back into Daichi’s side, their food cartons nestled between them.
“Feed me?”
Daichi pauses mid-bite, his chopsticks midway to his mouth. He looks over at Tooru, mouth still open. “Right now?”
Tooru rolls his eyes, “No, in two years.”
Daichi snorts, taking the piece of food and sticking it into his mouth. He picks up another before holding it in front of Tooru’s, watching as his boyfriend carefully takes the food into his mouth. Tooru chews it before winking at Daichi and holding up a peace sign.
“You’re such a sap.”
His cheeky remark receives a deadpan stare from Daichi.
“What?” Tooru swallows his bite of food before taking a sip of water and smiling at his boyfriend. “It’s one of my favorite things about you.”
Daichi rolls his eyes before reaching to pull another bite of food out and holding it out for Tooru’s pleasure. Tooru smiles cheekily at the service, deciding that if he says anything, that Daichi might not continue after all.
Tooru settles down and patiently waits for his boyfriend to feed them both, even if it takes more time.
As time passes, they eventually lose themselves in the movie, having finished their food somewhere along the way.
Eventually, Daichi’s focus fades back to Tooru. He lets his eyes focus on Tooru’s face and concludes why look when he can touch.
He leans in, gently nosing along Tooru’s cheekbone, placing open-mouth kisses along his jawline. Tooru tilts his head to allow Daichi’s attention to continue and hums, keeping his eyes on the movie.
Daichi brings his nose up to trace Tooru’s ear before using his teeth to bite his earlobe gently.
Tooru shivers at the action, turning to Daichi slightly, but not enough to stop Daichi from his actions. “Dai, that tickles.”
“Hmm.” Daichi ignores him, repeating the action, before whispering, “Call Stitch over.”
“Daichi, I do not want my son to witness-”
“Call Stitch, love.”
Tooru hesitates at the affectionate nickname. “Um..”
Daichi pulls back with a smile, “I promise.”
Scrutinizing eyes scan every detail of Daichi’s face, and he makes sure to keep it as open as possible without giving anything away. Whatever Tooru finds must be satisfactory, and he turns around to call out for Stitch.
Eventually, Stitch makes his way over, and Daichi feels his pulse rise in trepidation.
“What-” Tooru frowns, “Why does he have something on your… Oh my god.”
“Tooru.”
“Oh my god, Daichi.”
Daichi huffs a laugh. “Can I…?”
Tooru’s wide eyes turn to blink at Daichi, which Daichi takes as a sign to continue.
“We’ve been together for a long time, and I honestly couldn’t picture my life without you. You make my days brighter with each smile, each pout, each little scheme you pull me into. Honestly, sometimes you do make me angrier than I think I’ve ever been, but then you say the one thing I need to hear that makes me rethink the whole situation, and then I’m just left in awe by you.”
Tooru’s eyes are blinking wetly, and he’s trying to hide his sniffles in his hand, but Daichi can tell. He brings his hand up to gently push through Tooru’s hair, smiling softly at the love of his life.
“You are my biggest motivation, inspiration, and after everything you’ve gone through, I would be truly honored to go through everything the future holds for you, whether it be good or bad or both.”
At this declaration, Tooru’s eyes start to overfill with water, and Daichi brings his hands up to brush his tears away gently.
“Tooru, I love you more than all the stars in the sky. Would you let me have the honor of becoming your husband?”
“Daichi.”
Daichi barely registers the feeling of being knocked back into the pillows and blankets, the vibrant chorus of ‘Yes’ echoing in his head. Before he knows it, his eyes are watering too, and his arms tighten around his boyf- Fiance. His arms tighten around his fiance.
Gods, that’s thrilling.
Tooru pulls back from his hiding place in Daichi’s neck, “Daichi. Absolutely ye-” Tooru’s eyes widen in shock, “Why are you- Why are you crying ?”
Daichi smiles like a lovesick fool. He can’t help it. “I’m just- I adore you, Tooru, and I’m over the moon.”
Tooru brings his hand up to rest over Daichi’s cheek. “I love you, Sawamura Daichi.”
“I love you too, Oikawa Tooru.”
“I call Suga-chan to be my best man.”
“Excuse me?” Daichi furrows his brows. “That’s not even your best friend; Iwaizumi is.”
Tooru swishes his mouth in thought. “Hmm, I don’t think so.”
Daichi raises a brow, “Wanna bet?”
Tooru smirks and raises an eyebrow, his eyes shining with delight. “I do.”
