His heart was pounding, the music seemed a million miles away, his legs were shaking, and his drink was long forgotten, spilled on the floor. He had never in his wildest dreams expected this. But let's start at the beginning.
Tooru had always loved the holiday season. The lights, the snow, the hot chocolate, the cheer, the gift-giving, the cozy sweaters, the food, the parties, even the awful music; the whole shebang. This, however, was not what he was expecting to be doing this Christmas Eve. 'A nice, small, holiday get-together,' he was promised. He wouldn't quite describe it like that. He would instead describe it as an excuse for about a hundred people that he didn't know to drink away their problems. Red solo cup in hand, he pushed his way through the crowd of people clumsily attempting to dance towards the kitchen. Don't get him wrong, Oikawa Tooru was known for loving to party, but he didn't love crowds and this was a bit more than he preferred from a party.
Finally making it to the kitchen, he filled his cup with some liquor that he didn't care to read the label of, grabbed a cookie, and made his way to the hallway where he could watch the party from a distance. Down the hall a bit, he spotted a tall boy with black hair and a significantly-shorter boy with orange hair making out against the wall. Normally, he hated the king, especially since he became all lovey-dovey with his new boyfriend, but tonight, he just smiled at the sight. It was nice to see that they had each other for Christmas. He turned his head to people-watch but his thoughts wandered, wishing that he weren't alone this holiday. Wishing that it was him and his crush down the hall, just enjoying being together and in love.
As if on cue, a hand rested on his shoulder, shaking him from his daydreaming. He looked up and saw Iwaizumi. "Oi, what are you doing all the way over here? I figured you'd be out dancing with all the other lunatics out there," he teased. Oikawa looked out over the sea of people with a laugh.
"I'd outdance all those losers and steal the spotlight so I figured I should stick to the sidelines this time."
"How very chivalrous of you," Iwa laughed. "But for real, what's up? You have that look on your face again."
Sometimes, Tooru really hated how well Iwaizumi knew him. "I just..." He sighed and took a bite of his cookie to give himself time to think. He couldn't exactly tell him that he only wanted to be out there if he was dancing with him. He looked up at his childhood best friend. His eyes reflected the lights strung along the house, making them sparkle even more than usual. He was also wearing a tight sweater that highlighted his muscular body that always made Oikawa swoon. He was looking down at him with a concerned and caring look on his face, a look that always made Tooru want to spill out every one of his deepest darkest secrets. But he couldn't. He didn't want to ruin their friendship. "It's nothing, really. It's just a little crowded, I guess." Iwaizumi didn't seem to buy it for a second, but let it go. Instead, he simply nodded and changed the subject to make Oikawa more comfortable. God, Tooru loved that man.
As they were casually chatting about a book that Iwa had just finished, a drunk girl wandered up to them. "Looook! Mistletoe!" Tooru felt his face turn to an expression of horror as he followed her point to right above him. A few more people wandered over curiously, hearing her announcement. Tooru looked back to Iwaizumi, stunned by the situation that they had found themselves in.
"I... I should go, uh, I should go check on Mattsun," Oikawa blurted out as he turned tail and tried to walk away. Before he could, though, he felt a hand wrap around his wrist and pull him back.
"Come on, Tooru, it's the rules." Iwazuimi smiled at him warmly, making Tooru drop his drink. He couldn't think of words to say, he just stared up at him with wide eyes and a pounding heart. This couldn't be happening. There was no way that the man he had been in love with since the third grade was gently pulling him closer and wrapping his arms around his waist. And yet, no matter how many times he blinked to clear the daydream, Iwaizumi was still giving him that same look.
Iwaizumi brushed a strand of hair out of Tooru's face. "May I?" He whispered in a tone that sent shivers down Oikawa's spine. He felt his knees shake and all he could do was nod. Then, something that he had imagined countless times was happening. Hajime Iwaizumi was leaning towards him, his eyes fluttering shut and his arms around his waist tightening. Tooru closed his eyes as well and leaned forward as well, closing the distance between their lips. It was better than he could have ever imagined. His lips were soft and warm and his kiss was so gentle as if he feared Oikawa might break if he were any more roughly, which might have been true if the pounding in his heart was any indication. The kiss only lasted for a moment before they pulled apart but neither of them moved. Instead, they just stared at each other in wonder and warmth. This may have just been because of the mistletoe and the crowd of people chanting for them to kiss, but Tooru was going to relish this moment. He pressed their lips together roughly, desperate to take in every second of this that he could. Iwaizumi didn't hesitate to follow his lead and kissed him back, more confidently this time. He licked Tooru's bottom lip and he happily obliged and opened his mouth. He was vaguely aware of the crowd of people going back to whatever they were doing but he didn't care. Especially not when he heard a small groan escape Iwa's lips as they kissed. Hearing this, Tooru wrapped his arms tightly around his neck, trying to get as close as he possibly could. He was starting to think that this wasn't just because of the mistletoe. After a little while, they finally pulled apart and rested their foreheads together.
"I've been wanting to do that since we were kids," Iwaizumi whispered. Tooru smiled.
"Me too."
