The Best Way To Get Your Son(?) To Sleep

Summary:

This is for Icecore as part of a Secret Santa! Hope you like it!

Work Text:

The house is quiet, with only the stirring wind outside lending any noise to the lovely scene. The stillness gives a sense of peace to the adventurer sitting next to the only light currently on. His eyes glide over the papers in hand over and over, looking out for any misspellings, nonsensical sentences, or other errors.

This was a smaller piece that he’d been working on for the sake of taking a break from his longer projects, most of these papers made up of just a few random ideas he had over time, but there was one that he hoped to work on more than the others, even if it isn’t as exciting as some of the others. After all, one could say that story is still ongoing since he never did close that… case, as one of the others involved might say.

Felix’s ears twitch as he hears footsteps coming down the stairs, breaking him out of his reverie. When he looks over, he sees Bendy rubbing at his bloodshot eyes with a yawn. The little demon doesn’t seem to notice him as he walks towards the kitchen, despite the lamp next to the cat being the only one on in the otherwise dark downstairs. He grabs a glass of water and downs it, almost aggressively-or perhaps irritatedly? Shortly after putting his head on the table as his tail hangs listlessly behind him.

With a concerned frown, Felix stands up from the plush chair, setting the papers down behind him. The rustling of papers seems to alert Bendy as he tenses and raises his head to look around, eyes widening as they meet Felix’s.

“Felix?!” Bendy’s tail lashes behind him even as he attempts to compose himself. It… really doesn’t work, since the ever darker bags under his eyes and the fact that he’s down here in the first place make it clear that his nightmares have woken him up once more. Ah, but what should Felix do? If he tries to bring it up now, then with how tense the young demon is he’ll clearly not get anywhere. Instead, Bendy will simply push him away. Yet, Felix can’t just leave Bendy as he is.

Felix internally shakes those thoughts out of his head, since there’s no point dwelling on what won’t work. Perhaps a distraction would be better for now?

With that idea in mind, Felix sits across from Bendy and quickly thinks of something to say.

“You know, Bendy, I’ve been thinking about how I should write this smaller story I’ve been working on.”

Bendy’s head tilts ever so slightly, a single eyebrow raising as he waits to see where Felix is going with this. At least he immediately got less tense. A small win.

“So,” Felix continues. “I was wondering if I could perhaps tell you about it to get your thoughts on it?”

Bendy immediately grins, prior exhaustion gone in an instant, his tail wagging behind him as he leans forward. “Really? What’s it about?”

Felix smiles as well. “Well, it’s about a smaller adventure of mine…”

It doesn’t take long for Felix to launch into his tale of a missing amulet belonging to a lady who-as he found out the hard way-was apparently part of a secret society. He hadn’t been able to take the society down, which is part of why he isn’t making it into a book, instead writing it down in case it became relevant again in the future. Despite the less heroic ending, Bendy still holds onto every word as the tale is weaved, always happy to hear a story from the adventurer.

“Wait, so was the amulet magic?” Bendy asks as he suppresses a yawn.

“Well, not in the way you might think. As far as I’m aware, it was a type of key in order to get into their various safehouses. They may have had something I wasn’t aware of though…” Felix hums to himself.

“Well, I’m sure that-” Bendy yawns again, his body drooping as he leans more heavily against the table. “That eventually you’ll get the chance to solve it…” Another yawn. “It’ll be an awesome story…” His head leans against his hand as his eyes begin to close. He makes a few more half words before finally only soft breaths can be heard from him.

Felix gives a soft smile as he slowly and quietly moves from his seat. With the utmost care he can, he moves the small demon to the couch. He doesn’t trust that he could get Bendy upstairs without waking him after all. He then grabs a soft blanket from the closet, laying it over Bendy and practically tucking him in with a soft pat on the head. With Bendy finally resting, Felix makes himself as comfortable as possible on one of the nearby chairs, as it would be quite unfortunate if Cuphead tried to use this opportunity to prank Bendy.

If, perhaps, the next morning a certain aforementioned dish comes downstairs and sees the resting duo, and takes care to be more quiet than usual? Well, then no one has to know except him.
