Work Text:
Song Lan returned to the hut that the two fierce corpses had taken to living in. It was a little way from a small village. Song Lan wasn't sure what it was before he and Wen Ning started living there.
It wasn't like they really needed a home, as they didn't sleep or eat, but Wen Ning said that it was nice to have a place to return home; so after a while, Song Lan had agreed. They were even liked by the villagers.
After the events at the Guanyin Temple, and Wei Wuxian's and Wen Ning's name had been mostly cleared, everyone seemed to have grown a bit more comfortable with Wen Ning wandering around. They were relieved with Song Lan being non aggressive as well.
It was a nice feeling, having a home to return to.
As he approached the hut, he wasn't surprised to see Wen Ning was outside. On most days when Song Lan would return from his night hunts, he would find Wen Ning outside working in his small little herb garden that he had started to grow. When they had first moved into the hut and had wandered the village, he had taken an interest in some seeds. But he had to pass because he did not have any money. Later that day, a woman showed up at their hut and gave some seeds to Wen Ning to grow.
Since then, he had begun to grow and share with the other villagers. They tried to pay him, but Wen Ning and Song Lan really had no need for money, so instead the villagers gave them things to liven up the hut.
Now it really felt like a home, something the two of them haven't had for a while.
Wen Ning looked up and smiled, "Ah, Song Lan you are home."
Song Lan nodded and entered through the small gate. He noticed it didn’t squeak this time. As he looked down at it, Wen Ning stood up to dust off his dark green robes. A young woman had made him new robes to replace his old tattered ones, though he still kept the chains.
"Was the night hunt successful?" Song Lan nodded again. He looked at the gate again, and Wen Ning smiled.
"Ah, Mr. Chen came by and offered to fix up some things here at the hut."
Song Lan made his way to Wen Ning's side, who took the pouch that was offered to him. He opened it, his eyes lighting up. Whenever ever Song Lan left for a night hunt, he always would bring back herbs and various plants he thought that Wen Ning would like.
“Thank you, Song Lan.” Song Lan nodded and then looked around to see that a few other things had been done to the roof.
“Ah, yes Mr. Chen fixed our roof doesn’t leak anymore and as well as our steps. It is nice to not have rain coming in.” There was a sudden chattering sound. Looking down, Song Lan saw the newest member of their small family. Wen Ning bent down, after setting aside the pouch.
“Xiao Pengyou missed you too.” Song Lan reached out and gave a few pets to the raccoon that was currently nestled in Wen Ning’s arms. A while ago, Wen Ning had noticed some of his plants had been dug up, and they soon learned that there was a mischievous raccoon digging into Wen Ning’s garden. Song Lan had planned on chasing it away but Wen Ning instead held out his hand, with a few pieces of radish which the raccoon ate quickly.
“There you are, little one. You were just hungry.”
After that, the raccoon had begun to stick around, and Wen Ning didn’t seem to mind. Even Song Lan had not minded the new friend, and they even agreed on a name for the little guy.
Song Lan had never expected to have a life such as this, much less a family even if it was just a fellow fierce corpse and a raccoon.
“Wen Ning! Song Lan!” The two corpses turned to see familiar faces smiling at him.
“Master Wei, Master Lan, greetings. Please come in.” Wen Ning set Xiao Pengyou down, and together the two fierce corpses went to greet their friends.
