Work Text:
In the sky above the Earth, there lived two beings who acted as caregivers to the Earth. Hellena, known by humans as the sun, is responsible for giving energy to life on earth. Her counterpart Luna, or the moon as humans often call her, gives the Earth peace and tranquility. When the two were formed from nothingness they were opposite of each other, both knowing of their companion only by their effects on the land below as they let themselves orbit the Earth.
The two remained content this way for many millennia, but alas, the creatures of the Earth aren’t unique in their curiosity. And so, in an effort to meet the Earth’s source of energy, Luna let herself drift further away in her orbit, slowing herself down so she could see the other. And meet the two did, finding new company in one another, no longer confined to an eternity of loneliness. Each time the two bid one another farewell, they did so with a promise to see the other again. As they saw each other time and time again they began to long for each other's company. When they did spend time together they only wished to be closer. And so Hellena came up with a plan to shift the paths they made in the sky.
She began to move ever so slowly towards Luna until, eventually, they would overlap along their paths. When they did so, both were so happy that they forgot their duties as the sun and moon, the Earth left in a strange state of limbo as the two embraced for the first time. Of course, they could not remain together for long before their paths forced them apart once again, the two resuming their care for the Earth once more. The two decided to shift their paths again so they could embrace once more. In fact, they made that same decision after every eclipse of the two, the promise to see each other again now going unsaid as their love replaced it in their minds. The two lovers never could remember their duties when they overlapped, and the creatures of Earth soon learned to expect the limbo whenever the two met, even seeing a profound beauty in the union of their celestial mothers.
To this day, the two caregivers cherish the little time they get with one another, and each time they embrace they let the Earth live in a state of limbo for a short time before they separate and resume their duties once more. And each time they do so, the creatures of Earth stop their busy lives to bathe in the wonder of their caregivers, the beauty of the pair’s love.
