Work Text:
“Are you sure you’ll be okay? I mean, I can totally not go into work today. Do they really need me for that presentation-”
“Tony!” Steve cuts in, chuckling. “Peter and I will be fine. Of course you have to do the presentation. You created the tech, you have to be there sweetheart. Don’t worry, Peter and I will be fine.”
This was the first weekend since Steve and Tony had brought Peter home that Tony had had to go into work, and it’s safe to say Tony wasn’t happy about it. Steve wasn’t either; he would love to spend the day with his husband and his son, but he was slightly better at hiding it, since he knew that if he even slightly gave Tony the idea that he didn’t want him to go, he wouldn’t.
They had been lucky so far - Tony was able to work from home, which was very handy, especially after Steve’s paternity leave ran out and he had to go back to work; being an art teacher was kind of difficult if you weren’t actually in the classroom.
But of course, at some point, Tony was going to have to go back to the office, and that some point was today.
“But I’ll miss you,” Tony whispers, the fight draining out of him.
Steve almost crumbles then, lord knows he’s never been good at saying no to Tony Stark, especially when he pulls out the doe eyes, but he holds his nerve.
“I know, angel. But we both know you have to go to work. I’ll send pictures. And then when you get home, we can all do something together, okay?”
“I hate it when you’re right,” Tony sighs. “I’ll see you later?”
“Of course.”
After pressing a kiss to Steve’s lips, which he gladly returns, and stealing one last dose of baby cuddles from Peter, Tony heads out, promising to bring home dessert as part of tonight's dinner.
It takes Steve a while to get Peter ready. Usually, he and Tony team up, Steve taking the bath portion while Tony gets ready and starts up the coffee machine, then taking over to get Peter changed whilst Steve dresses and makes breakfast.
They truly are a team, like two jigsaw pieces slotting perfectly together. Steve misses his husband more than anything whilst he's away, he's missing his Tony and it hurts.
But before he can get too distracted by moping about his husband getting called in to do his job, his attention is diverted to his son, who's decided he's had enough of sleeping and is now practically whining to be let out of his cot.
Steve swoops in to pick him up, and Peter happily snuggles into his papa's muscular chest, causing Steve to smile fondly.
He really is so incredibly lucky. He doesn't think about it very often, but he is.
He has a job he loves - teaching art to kids will never be a bad thing, even if it does bring copious amounts of marking, he's married the love of his life and wakes up with him every morning and has the most perfect son in the world.
It takes a while to get Peter ready, after all, he can't replace another set of hands. It takes him longer than it definitely should to get Peter’s shoes on. For some reason, Tony has an obsession with baby shoes, and can’t stop buying them. Whilst Steve can’t deny that Peter looks adorable in today’s pair - a colourful pair of trainers with teddy bears on the Velcro straps - he makes a note to himself to talk to Tony. Peter really does not need more shoes than both him and Tony combined. Especially considering Peter will grow out of them in a matter of months. But soon enough, both him and Peter are dressed, fed and watered and are out the door.
Steve humours Peter’s babbles the entire journey to the museum, keeping conversation with him and asking questions. They get there relatively soon after the museum opens for the day, which Steve is grateful for, as they don’t have to wait too long in line before they’re allowed in.
Peter’s eyes are wide and curious as they walk around the exhibit - it’s an exhibit based on The Snowman and The Snowdog, and as soon as Steve saw the advertisement for it, he knew he wanted to take Peter. Both the book and movie has been a hit with Peter, and it’s been played and read in the Stark-Rogers household more than enough times for both Steve and Tony to be able to recite it inside out. They even have the bean toy, which Peter refuses to let go of. It’s in his hand now as Steve and Peter make their way around the room, looking at the paintings and drawings that show the creative process behind the making of the movie.
Halfway through, Steve takes a few pictures to send off to Tony, and he receives a response straight away.
Steve:

We’re at the snowman and the snowdog exhibition :)
Tony:
You’re an enabler, you know that right?
I thought we said we were going to ween Pete off that movie
Steve:
We also said we weren’t going to buy Peter any more shoes
And yet, here we are
Tony:
That’s a low blow Rogers
It’s not my fault our son is so adorable
I have to go, my presentation starts in five mins
Steve:
Good luck I know you’ll ace it
I love you
Tony:
Love you more
After another half an hour passes before Steve and Peter are ready to leave, in which Peter manages to convince Steve to get him the snowman plush toy to go with his snowdog plush without actually using any words.
Tony is literally never going to let it go once he sees it.
Peter is exhausted from the trip, and after a bottle, dozes off in his cot. Steve for his part, tries to get ahead on marking, but falls asleep on the couch. He doesn’t wake up until later, and when he does, his gorgeous husband is the first thing he sees, and he can’t help but smile.
“Hi.”
Tony snorts, but smiles too. “Hi. Was that adventure really that tiring?”
“I honestly don’t even remember falling asleep.”
Tony shakes his head fondly. “I got cheesecake for dessert.”
“You’re the best.”
“I know. Don’t think I didn’t see that new Snowman plush though.”
“Dammit!”
Tony laughs as he walks over to the kitchen, probably to get started on dinner.
“Just so you know, this means I can buy new shoes for Peter!”
“Hang on, I bought one thing!”
“Potato, pot-ah-to.”
“Tony!”
