Work Text:
The smell of coffee brewing and people chattering quietly was perfect background noise. The fireplace was less than five feet away, and the armchair cushions were concave in all the right places. The book “Firstborn” was open, brown eyes trained onto the text, facial expression one of total enrapturement. It seemed as if nothing could break her concentration. There was a shadow and then a soft “plop!” as a piece of folded up paper slid down the pages towards her black hoodie.
So much for that concentration.
A quick look around the room didn’t help, no one seems to be standing out, or seems suspicious. Curiously, she opened the paper. “You are surrounded by disgusting, monsterous trash. Run. Or maybe I'll think you're one of them.” When reading something like this, a normal person would probably freeze up and book it, but all that was given as a reaction was sigh of aggravation and an eye roll. “Can’t a girl read in peace without being bothered by this bullshit?” A purple ribbon marked her place in the book, it safely tucked in the crook of her right arm, and went up to the register where a purple spider monster with pigtails was bagging up three pastries per bag. “Excuse me Ma’am.” Six black eyes looked up at her without stopping her task. “What can I do for you dearie?” A smile pulled at her lips unconsciously at the polite worker, but turned a little stiff when the note was held up. “I was reading my book by the fireplace when this was dropped in my lap.” The note was held in between her two fingers, and while she may have had a smile on her face, her eyes held a look of disgust. The spider monster took it and read it, stilling in her work for just a moment, before another spider of a normal size came and took it from her. “Did you see who dropped it?” Her tone was still polite, but it held an edge, and she wasn’t blamed for it. It vexed her something bad as well. Shaking her head side to side she spoke in a tone like she regretted saying, “No. I’m sorry.”
Muffet was the owner of her favorite café, and with a wave of her hand she let the girl know that “I have eyes everywhere” and that it wouldn’t happen again if the Captain of the guard had anything to do with it. At the mention of the Captain, a wider smile broke out onto her face. There wasn’t a person alive that didn’t know Captain Undyne of the Royal Guard, now leading a different faction of law enforcement for both monsters and humans. That was one of the first things that their ambassador, Frisk, had pushed for knowing that not everyone would be welcoming nor accepting. Peeps has always admired how for someone so young, they seemed to be a lot wiser than most, and definitely a role model for what people are supposed to act like.
"What's your name dearie?" The brunette seemed to perk up a bit, extending a hand out to shake. "Uhm, I go by Peeps. It's nice to meet you ma'am." Muffet giggled lightly as she took the hand, hands fitting perfectly, same size. Muffet couldn't help but think 'So small'. "You can call me Muffet. I sincerely hope that this wont turn you away from my shop now dearie." Peeps began shaking her head vehemently. "Oh no, this is my favorite place! Well, besides Shipley's, but that doesn't exist up here." Muffet had a blank look on her face before she burst into a fit of giggles again. "Honesty, I like that." While Muffet was giggling some more, something caught Peeps' attention to the left of her. Chocolate iced doughnuts with spiderweb looking sprinkles. She'll never admit it, but just the sight of the fresh pastries were making her drool. Licking her lips, she turned to get Muffet's attention, she found the spider monster already looking at her. A knowing look was paired with just pride that made her smile very sweetly as Peeps was asking for three of those delicious pieces of heaven.
On top of that she tipped.
"Have a good day and come back soon Peeps!" was the last thing Peeps heard. It was getting to be early evening, so she had plenty of daylight to enjoy her stroll home, maybe munching on the treat a bit along the way. As the girl walked out, a large shadow ‘popped’ on the other side of the counter to the left. “Ya called?” The note was held out to be taken. “Sweet thing had this dropped in her lap in my shop. Do us a favor and make sure it doesn’t happen again.” The hulking figure came into the light, blue blips for eyes reading the note, steadily getting smaller with each passing second. “Heh, note a problem Muffet.” There was a pause, before a bone brow was raised. “Wait, ya said ‘us’. Ya talkin’ about the human that was given this to?” Muffet nodded as she picked up a glass to dry off, with two hands coming up to her chest, giggling lightly. "Oh yes. A sweet human by the name of 'Peeps', be nice to her when you see her. I like her."
A deadpan look was pointed at the money grubbing fiend he called a friend. "She bought extra sweets didn't she?" Muffet began to cackle, causing the skeleton to sweat a bit. "She even tipped too." Muffet was all aglow as she swirled her full tip jar, a five standing out proudly on top. "Well, I guess you ain't the only one getting a tip. Thanks a bucks. I'm gonna pay a visit to some friends. I know they're getting bored down at the station. Their training might pay off." Now Muffet was wearing an unimpressed face. "You used that twice Sans." The skeleton just shrugged his shoulders, blipping out just as he exited the door.
