Cultural Differences

Summary:

When Elton wakes up to a brand new leg, they are confused, but not for the reason you'd imagine

(I am very tired and just wrote an English essay bashing love in 30 min)

Notes:

Some context
In Kago, giving someone something holds some nasty connotations
Direct transfer in public: HUGE deal, saying "I'm giving this to u cause ur too broke to get it urself", is seen as a very big humiliation for the recipient
Direct transfer in private: Usually payment, tokens representing deals, or heirlooms
Wrapped package: A threat, can range from a letter saying "I'm gonna kill u" to a box full of human teeth and bones
Item is left on land: A less major way of saying "haha I have more money than you", can be a jab or insult

Since everyone in Kago is rich, giving people stuff or free is a wild concept

Work Text:

Elton was, for lack of a better term, baffled.

They had woken up early, their body still not used to the amount of sleep they were getting. Guess not sleeping for weeks straight can mess that up. But that wasn’t the point. The point was, there was an item in their room, that they did not make, that was intended for them.

Elton was familiar with people giving others things, they aren’t an idiot, but this was very strange. It wasn’t a direct transaction so that soundly put a humiliation tactic or payment off the table. Maybe it was a token of a deal? The note had no meeting place or contract, and deals are not something you leave up to interpretation.

So not a deal, probably. It wasn’t wrapped, so it wasn’t a threat. Unless it was? The wrapping might be a Kago thing, so maybe it was a threat. It wasn’t the strangest nor the worst executed threat they’ve ever seen (that honor when to the empty box Tori got, along with an ironically empty threat). So, it might be a deal, it might be a threat. But it was also left in their room. Was this a jab at their stupidity breaking their last leg? Or perhaps a well-earned warning about crossing the line of being inconvenient. Did that count as a threat?

Another idea made itself known. What if these people are just… giving them something? The note did not demand anything, and the words didn’t hold any weirdly passive-aggressive undertones, so maybe it was even. They all seemed apologetic about the void-jumping thing, so maybe an apology?

No, if it was an apology, Elton would have to use it as firewood. They had overreacted, they made themself a problem, they didn’t deserve an apology.

Not payment (probably), not a threat (most likely), and not an apology (hopefully). Maybe it’s just a weird thing these people do. Giving each other things for fun. That would be the least strange thing these folks do.

…That’s a lie. It would be very strange, and completely insane. Why would they just give people stuff? That’s bonkers! It had to be something, maybe it was something Elton had never heard of? That would make more sense than just throwing materials around willy nilly.

Before Elton could fully drive themselves insane with this item, they heard a loud bang from above them.

Accailia was awake. Accailia is one of these weird people. Accailia would tell them, though not without a significant amount of judgment. Elton could handle judgment. Elton could not handle being given stuff.

…Maybe they were the weird one.
