A Minotaur, seriously?

Summary:

Sally Jackson thinks it’s incredibly reckless for Percy to be going to the Grand Canyon. He could be attacked by a monster! Why in the world does he find her concern so amusing?

Annabeth opened the door and swung her camping backpack on the couch. “What’s that about a Minotaur?”

“Mom’s worried.”

“About a Minotaur?” Annabeth laughed.

Sally looked between the two of them. “It wasn’t so funny the last time one attacked you.”

Work Text:

Sally stood in the kitchen, her batch of cookie dough forgotten on the counter as she looked at Percy.

“Mom, I love you, but Annabeth and I are going camping. I promised her.”

How could sound so confident about it? His muscled frame leaned against her counter, tanned, relaxed, and so distinctly adult.

“Absolutely not.” No son of hers was going to get himself killed camping. The Grand Canyon was practically crawling with monsters, she was sure of it.

Percy frowned, contemplative.

Well, he was eighteen and she was pushing this already. “You can go to camp half blood if you insist,” she conceded.

“We’re adults,” Percy said.

“Yes.”

“It’s not like we haven’t shared a room before.”

“Obviously.” Sally was slightly confused at this point.

“So why’s a tent any different?”

Sally laughed. She regretted it a bit when she saw Percy’s face, his eyebrows creased in a perfect imitation of Poseidon.

“That’s what you thought this was about?” Sally asked. “Not the ridiculous number of monsters you’re going to get attacked by?” Maybe her little boy wasn’t quite as grown up as he thought.

But then Percy smiled and she was confused again.

“Mom, we’ll be fine.”

“And if a Minotaur shows up?”

It was Percy’s turn to laugh, a big one that bent him over. “Mom!”

“What?”

“A Minotaur, seriously?”

Percy’s face turned serious. “Mom, why do you think we haven’t had an attack here in a year? I kill the monsters.”

“When? I’ve never seen you…”

“Sit down with me,” he said, moving to sit next to Annabeth. She followed him.

Annabeth put a hand on his shoulder. Percy sighed.

“I kill them. Fewer come now that they know who I am, but I kill the ones that do.”

She hated to see him this serious. “How?”

“I… rip the water out of them.”

Oh.

“So they won’t get you at the Grand Canyon?”

Percy looked down at his hands. Annabeth answered for him. “There won’t be any monsters at the Grand Canyon while we’re there.”

Oh.

Sally pulled a smile onto her face. “Well, they are monsters, Percy.”

His brilliant green eyes met hers. “I love you.”

“I love you too, honey. Have fun on your trip.”

“We will,” he said as he collected his things.

As she watched him leave, Sally concluded that if anyone could handle that power, it was him. Then, she finished making those cookies.
