Chapter Text

Emily looked out of the large window she was sitting next to. It was a cool April morning. Spring was now showing itself well, the flowers were blooming colorfully, and the birds were chirping with enthusiasm. Emily, on the other hand, was sitting in the library at Boston University in the early hours of the morning, writing poetry. She'd rather sleep in her warm bed than be here in the early morning, but Sue hadn't come to the room they shared and that made Emily very uncomfortable inside. She couldn't sleep until morning and waited for Sue to come, but Sue didn't come which means that Sue had spent the night with her boyfriend, Sam. Emily chose to sit here in this quiet library and wait for her class to begin, rather than watch Sue arrive early in the morning and walk into the room with a walk of shame.

Emily sighed deeply. She never knew why she was doing this to herself? Did she take pleasure in suffering? Although most poets wrote their works by dealing with their painful lives, was Emily like that too? Did the anguish she suffers from the unrequited love for her childhood friend inspire her and cause her to write? Emily had loved Sue since middle school. Slightly shorter than Emily, Sue was a slim and beautiful girl, and the boys at school took an interest in Sue, including Emily's brother. Like Emily, Sue loved literary works and poetry. These common interests brought them closer together, and they soon became very good friends. Emily and Sue, who were almost always together were starting to fall apart towards the beginning of high school, which was due to Emily's brother Austin's interest in Sue. Seeing that Sue liked Austin's attention, Emily had to watch how the two of them became lovers. Emily and Sue, who had been together again at the beginning, started to drift away because Austin was always getting in the way and always taking Sue somewhere with his friends. There was no reason for this, but the separation started after Emily realized the jealousy and sadness she felt. Sue couldn't understand why Emily was estranged from her because Emily was Sue's best friend and their friendship was so important to Sue that sometimes Sue would rather hang out with Emily than hang out with Austin.

One day, when Emily and her family returned from visiting their aunt, she heard giggles from Austin's room. Unable to overcome their curiosity, Lavinia and Emily began to eavesdrop on Austin’s room, and at that moment Emily's world collapsed. The voice coming from Austin's room belonged to Sue. Emily couldn't help herself and went to her room in anger and started to cry. It was then that she realized how much she loved Sue and had lost her at the same time. From that day on, Emily didn't want to see either Sue or Austin, and she locked herself in her room and just went to her classes. Even Austin didn't understand Emily's behavior and was very upset that Emily ignored him. Lavinia was the only one who understood Emily, so she took Emily to George's party to make her feel better. Seeing Emily at the party, Sue rushed to Emily's side, but Emily ignored her and chose to hang out with George. Sue was so upset that she had to leave the party. A few days after the party, as Emily was walking out of school saw Sue sitting on one of the garden benches crying. Emily couldn't stand it and ran to Sue's side, learning that Sue had broken up with Austin, and she had told her that it was because of her. She had asked Emily why she had left her so alone? She looked helplessly at Emily through tears, asking Emily not to let her go again. Sue had promised that she would never let anyone come between them again. Because for Sue, Emily's friendship was more important than anything else.

From that day on, Emily made a promise to Sue, especially to herself. No matter what, she would never hurt this person whom she loved more than the world, and she would not leave her side. No matter how much she loved her, she would put all her feelings aside and remain her best friend. That's one reason why she's here in the library right now. She didn't want to add another pain.

The peaceful silence of the library was broken by Emily's ringing phone. There were a few students like her who came to the library early, and as soon as they heard the noise, they glared at Emily. Emily hurried out of the library, apologizing, and looked at her phone. Sue's name was written on the screen. Emily didn't want to pick up the phone for a second and wanted to run away just like before, but she didn't.
" Emily, where are you? When I entered the room, you weren't there and I was worried," said Sue, her voice genuinely worried.
"I've been to the library. It's a beautiful morning and I thought I'd be inspired to write and also, you know, I have a class," Emily said.
“I wish you had texted me before you decided on such things, when I didn't see you in the room, I thought something had happened,” said Sue, Emily finding some relief in her voice. "I'm sorry Sue. How can I make you forgive myself?" ' Emily asked, trying to soften things up a bit.
"You can come with me to breakfast for example. I'll be in the cafeteria in 15 minutes," said Sue and hung up. Emily sighed and went to meet Sue.
