Work Text:
A man stands on the field with an airsoft gun, he hums and sings, before finally raising his gun and shoots.
A bird fell down, landed right in front of that man, heaving and twitching. Colored red and is breathing its last death. The man kneels and softly picks it up.
It stopped struggling and finally relaxed.
A red bird was killed that day with an airsoft gun.
The bird cuckoos and caws to the man, although it is dead, its words still remain on the tip of its tongue.
“You killed me,” It said, softly and with confusion and betrayal in its dead, dead eyes.
“I did,” He openly admitted, “I killed you with my airsoft gun,”
“Why?”
“I am seeking redemption,”
“You seek redemption by killing me?”
The man nods and the birds cuckoos softly.
“I am also not free of sin nor filth. Look at my feathers! It's red not because of my blood, it's red from my guilt and my hope of salvation. I was once a pigeon, a white one. Similar to the clouds, similar to snow, similar to the sun, similar to your eyes,”
“I also hope for redemption. I hope that with this blood, all of my sins and all of my guilt will be washed away. I hope that they would see me as a casualty, and they would see the red feathers as my trickling crimson bloom, not as a mark of my actions,”
“What did you do, anyway? For you to think that this is the answer?” The man asks.
The bird caws, not freely, never again freely, “I am what I am. I am built of aspiration, I am built of what people wish for me. I fail them all as i fell from the heavens and onto this earth and the muddy clouds and the wet grass,”
“People’s aspirations?”
It nods, “I failed them all. They wished me to fly high, but my fear made me struck down by you. They wished for me to live a happy life, but I never really liked life. The wished for me to die peacefully, and yet i die with a hole to my stomach,”
The man nods.
“Do you feel like this is your redemption?” The bird asks.
“Redemption is not like this,”
“Do you feel like your sins have been washed away?”
“They're still there as a heavy weight on my shoulders,”
“Then, did you regret killing me?”
He nods, and they both sit on the fields with a heavy thought in their minds.
