Chapter Text
Sirius figured he was perhaps having the worst day of his life. James and Lily had finally been found by Voldemort and when he got to the house the roof was blown wide open. He rushed inside, finding James on the bottom of the stairwell knocked out cold. Making sure his friend was okay, he then went up the stairs to find Lily, also knocked out, Charles crying in his crib and Harry barely breathing in his. Rushing to Harry he quickly performed every healing spell he knew and sent a Patronus off to Dumbledore to alert him about the situation.
“Is he okay?!?” Lily was awake and checking over Charles while Sirius tried to get Harry stable.
“Yeah almost, a few more spells and he will be stable.”
“Pads!” James rushed into the Nursery, Dumbledore behind him. “Are they okay?”
“Charles is fine, Harry was hurt but is stable now.” Sirius replied while looking at the now sleeping child.
“The prophecy has come true then, one of the boys has been marked by Voldemort.” Dumbledore was peering over Lily's shoulder at Charles with nary a glance at Harry who was asleep in Sirius’s arms.
James and Lily glanced at each other and then at Charles who had a V shaped cut on his head. “Charles?” Lily motioned to the cut on his head.
“Indeed, my dear girl.” Dumbledore plucked the child from the crib, “The boy who lived.”
The two elder Potters looked in awe at the now proclaimed boy who lived, thrilled they proclaimed, “We will have to celebrate then! Voldemort has been defeated!”
“For the time being that is, I don't believe he is truly gone. Our dear Charles will have to face him again and this time we will make sure he is ready for it.” Dumbledore's eyes were gleaming with something.
“What about Harry? He's his brother, he will surely be a target as well.” Sirius thought this was a reasonable thing to suggest, if one was getting special treatment surely the other should have the same just to be safe. Besides, he didn't want his godson in danger.
“I think it's best if we separate the children, we wouldn't want young Harry to get jealous of his brother.” Dumbledore said, now looking at the sleeping child that Sirius was holding. “Lily, your sister has a child doesn't she? She wouldn't mind taking in young Harry until his Hogwarts years?”
“I can't think of why she wouldn't take Harry in, after all we certainly can't keep him here with Charles.” She replied.
“With Harry gone in the muggle world we will have to make Charles heir, we can't have Harry keeping the title and not knowing about our world.” James suggested making Dumbledore nod.
“Prongs, are you hearing yourself?” Sirius exclaimed, not wanting to believe what he was hearing. “You are talking about disowning Harry from the Potter line? Your own son?!” He gestured to the infant he was holding. “ And you're talking about giving him to Petunia? The same Petunia that called Lily a whore and a freakish bitch on your guys' wedding day?”
“I'm sure she won't mind Sirius, it's for the best really.” Dumbledore patronizingly exclaimed. “After all, she's family and she will come to love him eventually like all families do.”
Sirius was pretty sure that was the dumbest thing he had ever heard. Dumbledore knew damn well that his own parents were downright awful to him and he ended up having to run away to the Potters just so his parents wouldn't kill him when he got home. Somehow though Lily and James were nodding like it was the most logical thing in the world, like they didn't all go to Hogwarts together and see with their own eyes how awful Walburga and Orion Black were to their two children.
“No, I am not standing by and letting you condemn this child, my godson, to eleven years of hell in the muggle world where no one will understand him and with people that hate his very existence.” Sirius was enraged. “I grew up with people that hated me, I know what that is like, I am not letting Harry go through the same thing.”
“Now Pads I dont think it will be that bad.” James said annoyed at Sirius now that he wasn't just letting them drop the child off at Petunias.
“No James, I'm not taking that chance. Disown him if that's what you really want, I will take Harry into my family. He's my Godson by magic, it is my right and duty to take care of him.” Sirius was done, he didn't want to be in this room any longer with these people that used to be his friends. “Just know this, if you take that path you will never be able to undo that, you will never be able to have your child back.”
Sirius stormed out of the blown open nursery and nearly ran into a pacing Remus and a pissed off Moody who was in the destroyed living room.
“What happened?” Remus was in front of him now, anxiously waiting to hear the verdict.
“Dumbledore in all his high and mighty wisdom declared Charles the boy who lived, got James to agree to disown his own son, my godson I might add, and tried to convince them to dump him at Petunias, Lily's wizard hating sister and her whale of a husband.” Sirius was about ready to go and murder someone.
“Charles is the boy who lived!” Remus exclaimed happily and went up to see his godson.
Sirius stood there with Moody, both looking at the stairwell in disbelief. “How's the kid?” Moody finally said not looking away from where Remus disappeared.
“Which kid? If you're asking about Charles, then he's fine. Just got a cut on his forehead.” Sirius just wanted to leave now. “If you're asking about Harry, then he's okay for now. Took me ten minutes just to get him into a stable condition so I'll be taking him somewhere to get proper medical attention before James can rip him from the family magic.”
“I meant your child Sirius, that's one hell of a head wound he's got. Best take him to the Goblins instead of St. Mungo's if James is going to disown the lad.” Moody looked disappointed, and Sirius was happy to have someone on his side for once on this god forsaken night. Taking Harry to the Goblins was a good idea as well, St. Mungo's did not deal with disownments and Sirius could sense the dark magic that was used on Hadrian and he didn't want the Ministry getting wind and shipping his Godson off to the Unspeakables to be experimented on.
“Thanks Moody, and heads up. For Voldemort to find James and Lily like he did, Peter would have had to have told the dark bastard willingly.” Sirius was not letting the rat get away with what he caused tonight, and if he couldn't hunt him down himself then why not get Moody, the best auror in the ministry, on his trail. “He's also a common brown rat animagus, he most likely disappeared down the nearest sewer drain.”
“I'll get right on it lad, thanks for the information. Now go take care of that child, he won't get better with you just standing here.” Moody was pleased to get some information on what happened since Dumbledore declined to inform him as to what the situation was other than the fact that You Know Who had been vanquished. He was even more pleased when Sirius hurried off to take care of the little lad. Turning towards the stairs, Moody walked away intent on grilling everyone up there on what actually happened. If he stalled them all a little so that Sirius could get to the Goblins in time before Dumbledore got James to go and disown the poor lad, well no one had to know but him.
