Weddings have always been a big deal in the pro-hero community, something to do with the field being filled with self-sacrificing risk-takers meant that occasions to celebrate had to be celebrated. Of course, not all weddings were like that, the pro-hero community also had its fair share of courthouse weddings that were quick and to the point. The Aizawa/Yamada wedding was like that, an intimate wedding with few guests and little theatrics. Most people assumed it was Aizawa that made that decision and Yamada wanted to please his fiancé when in reality it was completely mutual. It wasn’t wildly known but Yamada Hizashi hated weddings, which is why he was taking his sweet time getting ready for this one. He was already in his suit standing in front of the full-length mirror in the bathroom focusing on tying the tie, his fingers moved slowly rusty from the years of not having to wear one but the muscle memory was still there from his years of school. Hizashi hated weddings for a few reasons; The first reason was mainly the noise of hundreds of people in a closed environment oftentimes with poor sound systems it was very easy for his hearing aids to get overwhelmed by the noise and for him to just leave them off when the reception started. The second reason was because of his quirk, it felt strange to say he was an adult and he gain an expert level of control over his voice, but with how loud weddings get and with a little alcohol involved it was very easy to lose control. He wasn’t looking forward to it, well that’s not true he’s looking forward to forcing Shouta to dance with him.
The lights flickered quickly in the bathroom notifying Hizashi that Shouta wanted his attention. He turned to see his husband leaning on the doorframe looking smart in his suit with his hair pulled back into a bun. His eyes were also bloodshot as normal one of the common signs of his exhaustion.
You ready to go? Shouta signed probably noticing his husband wasn’t wearing his hearing aids. Hizashi took another look in the mirror making sure the tie was straight and his glasses weren’t crooked. Shouta walked further into the room grabbed his eyedrops off of the countertop and leaned his head back taking them to relieve their discomfort.
Should I even bother putting on my ears? Hizashi asked after Shouta blinked the excess liquid away.
Aizawa just shrugged at his husband pocketing the eye drops and walking further into their house. Yamada sighed and walked towards the bedroom grabbing the devices off of the nightside table where they were charging. Sliding them in and turning them on Hizashi was greeted with static that he has always associated with hearing aids. He walked out of the bedroom to hear a faint thud and what was probably the cat’s food being poured into its containers. Yamada pulled a face as he moved towards the kitchen to see Shouta putting away their cat’s food and their new cat face first into the dish.
“She wasn’t on the counter again, was she?” He asked cocking an eyebrow towards his husband. The look on his face was answer enough for him. “Shouta I prepare food there” Hizashi whined
“I’m working on it; you knew there was a possibility of bad behaviours when we adopted her” His husband defended their rescue cat. Hizashi huffed squatting down to pet the cat while she was eating.
“Listen here you little gremlin, you may have seduced my husband to ignore your evil schemes, but I won’t tolerate this behaviour, stay off my kitchen counters” Hizashi threatened the cat while stroking her back. Shouta poked Hizashi’s forehead to grab his attention knowing that his husband had a hard time making out words if he wasn’t looking at the person talking. Hizashi looked up and saw Shouta’s outstretched hand.
“Leave Sushi alone or you’re going to get cat hair all over your suit” He took the hand letting his husband pull him up. “The last thing we need is the number four hero to come after you”
After one final look over for the two of them to make sure there were no cat hairs they slipped on their shoes; Hizashi grabbed his car’s keys and Shouta shut the house lights off saying goodbye to their cat. It was an unspoken rule that Hizashi drives to parties mainly because he rarely drank whereas Shouta would easily get bullied into drinking by Kayama. They drove towards the wedding with Hizashi prepping Shouta for what was going to happen. It wasn’t every day that a pro hero got married let alone one that was a celebrity, there was going to be press and paparazzi trying to get as many pictures as possible. The couple was hoping to avoid the press by not wearing anything associated with their hero personae, but Hizashi was a wild card because he was also one of those celebrity pro heroes. He was hoping that wearing a subtler suit would help the press ignore him, it was a black suit with golden thread woven into the jacket in a floral pattern, Shouta thought his husband looked extravagant and if it was up to him, they would have skipped the wedding and gone right to the bedroom. They knew they arrived when they saw the crowd of people and photographers standing outside behind the barricades that were set up. Hizashi pulled into a parking spot turning off his car. He reached out and squeezed his husband’s hand apologizing for the crowd. Yamada turned to look at his husband noticing a strand of hair that fell out from his bun, he reached out to tuck it behind his ear. They shared a semi-private moment before they would have to face the crowds.
Hizashi reached back and turned off the hearing aids in anticipation of the upcoming noise. He handed over his pair of glasses to his husband while grabbing the spare set of his Present Mic glasses and setting them on his face. Shouta exited the car first pocketing the glasses, he walked quickly passed the line of photographers, a practiced maneuver that he perfected in high school after the sports festival. Yamada walked out of the car strolling towards the entryway of the church, he let them take pictures of him smiling showing off the suit that Best Jeanist made for him. The superhero also made Shouta’s suit but seeing how it is just a classic black suit there was no need for him to show it off. Once he made it past the crowd of photographers not answering any of the questions he couldn’t hear, instead just saying how happy he is for the couple and that he can’t wait to have Uwabami on his show again soon. He entered the church doors and saw Shouta talking to Kayama, he strode over to him burying his head into his husband’s neck and groaned. Hizashi remembered to turn the aids back on when he felt a soothing rumble coming from Shouta’s throat. Grabbing his husband around his chest resting his chin on the man’s shoulder he took Nemuri and all her glory in.
“You’re never one to leave it up to the imagination, are you?” He asked. The woman was wearing a short skintight dress in a dark purple that almost looked black. She must have had her contacts in, either that or she committed to squinting the entire night.
“Some of us are here to have a good time” She replied winking, causing the two men to huff in response.
Hizashi knew what he signed up for being a celebrity, that the public believed they were entitled to every tiny aspect of his life, and most days he didn’t mind it, hell any other event, and the man would encourage it. Weddings just weren’t his thing, maybe it was because he never stayed with one family long enough as a child to get the difference between a married couple and a dating couple. The main reason Shouta was able to convince him to say yes was after he was hospitalized and Hizashi wasn’t allowed into Shouta’s room until he woke up and told the staff that he wanted his partner there. Kayama was bitter that they didn’t throw a big party and invite everyone to celebrate but she still showed up to be their witness. It wasn’t that Hizashi didn’t love Shouta, if it wasn’t for the fact that his husband is an underground hero, he would shout his love for the world to hear. Hizashi didn’t understand the ceremony of it all, the spectacle, the traditions, the money spent. Shouta held out his normal glasses offering them to him, Hizahsi quickly swapped out his hero glasses for the normal ones.
The three of them moved as a group to find a place to sit. The church had high ceilings with beautiful windows and uncomfortable seats. No amount of flowers attached to the benches would ever change that. There were soft pastels everywhere nice spring colours; Hizashi couldn’t tell if that was normal for the church or added specifically for the wedding. Sitting down Hizashi and Shouta looped hands entwining their fingers pressing their shoulders into one another. The trio waited for the room to fill and the ceremony to begin.
Luckily enough the speakers they were using did interfere with his hearing aids, so he wasn’t forced to sit through the ceremony in silence. It was a large wedding party; the groom might not have been a professional hero, but he was still a celebrity which meant that there would be a lot of big names present. Everyone stood to see Uwabami enter the church being led by a team of flower girls. She looked gorgeous; nothing was out of place even her snakes were cooperating. When they sat down, he could see Midnight mutter something under her breath and Shouta smirk at it. He raised his eyebrows at his husband who mouthed the word ‘later’. The ceremony was much more westernized and religious than he would have initially guessed, it was also taking a lot longer than he would have guessed. Hizashi leaned back into the bench stretching his legs out in front of him trying to find a comfier position. Soon enough they had gotten to the main event the ‘first kiss’ between the two of them, the applause was a little too loud forcing him to turn his hearing aids so far down they were basically off. As he completed the familiar action, he looked at Shouta from the corner of his eye, his husband’s eyes looked like they were tearing up. He didn’t draw attention to it instead he joined in the applause with everyone else as the newlyweds exited the venue together. Hizashi threw his arm over his husband pulling him in close.
“Let me know when it’s safe for me to turn my ears back on,” Yamada said hoping that years of practice would have him speaking at a comfortable volume for everyone. He felt his husband nod against him. They filed into the crowd of guests exiting the wedding, the photographers now dispersed chasing after the freshly married couple. The wind was cold, but that wasn’t surprising seeing how the snow had just barely melted the previous week. Hizashi felt Shouta shiver under his arm and pulled him closer pressing a kiss into his temple. The three of them moved towards Yamada’s car, carpooling to the venue together, Nemuri getting dropped off at the wedding for her convenience. Hizashi opened the passenger side door and pushed the front seat forward allowing Nemuri to crawl into the back seat, years of practice were the only reason why she didn’t flash her two coworkers. Sliding the seat back up he held open the door for Shouta to climb in and take his seat, once his husband was sat down, he pushed the door shut with what he assumed was a loud smack. On his walk back to the driver's side he turned up his hearing aids, so he’d at least be able to tell when his passengers were talking.
Shouta made a habit of not talking while they were driving together unless he knew Hizashi could take his eyes off the road for a few seconds. Normally their car rides consisted of Yamada singing whatever song came to mind or sometimes if the song on the radio had a strong enough base level to it, he could make it out. It was a long drive to the reception; the building was out in the countryside in the middle of nowhere. Hizashi turned towards Shouta when he could hear his husband yelling, his eyes flicked up to the rear-view mirror to see Nemuri arguing back. He pulled into a parking spot and turned off the car waving a hand in between the two people arguing to stop the noise.
“What is it this time?” He asked, curious as to what set them off.
“Nemuri doesn’t think that a pro-hero wedding is a perfect time for a villain attack” Shouta answered as soon as Hizashi was focused on him.
“Are we attacking the wedding or somewhere else?” Hizashi asked in return
The wedding Nemuri signed cutting in
“Oh, that’s a perfect time to attack pro-heroes, no one has their gear, and no one is expecting it”
Thank you! Shouta signed enthusiastically. Nemuri made grabby hands towards his face trying to get his attention. He turned towards her quirking his eyebrows up.
“Sorry” she started with an apology knowing he hated when people gestured like that at him as if he was an animal being summoned. “But think this through, why would a villain attack a room filled with powerful quirks and people? If they don’t kill everyone at once there are multiple heroes on sight immediately”
“Is this what you guys talk about when I’m not listening?”
“Not always” Shouta answered
“Imagine if All Might was at the wedding? You might as well just throw yourself in jail” Nemuri continued
“Since when has All Might made public appearances like that? You can’t just throw in a hypothetical that is impossible” Shouta started signing as he spoke.
“Could you imagine All Might at a wedding? He would probably jump out of the cake” Hizashi signed as he spoke knowing that if he started laughing, they would never understand what he was saying. The other two in the car tried to hold back their laughter as Hizashi continued with the mental image He’d jump out saying I am here. That’s what did it, the entire car was thrown into a fit of laughter Hizashi being able to make out some of the sounds. “Okay serious time, do you need a ride home?”
“Oh, I won’t be going home tonight,” Nemuri said winking.
“Text one of us tomorrow so we know you aren’t dead”
“What a gentleman,” Nemuri said sarcastically
“It’s why I married him” Yamada joined in on the joke. He felt a rough kiss pressed into his cheek, Shouta’s stubble rubbing against his skin.
They exited the car walking into the reception hall, the decorations in the church paled in comparison. There were Hor D’oeuvres set out on multiple tables, a giant collage of the happy couple throughout the years. The lighting was already dim even though it was early evening, the decorations tried to counteract the low lighting with a dangerous number of candles. The bar was right by the entryway and there was already a line of people waiting, wanting to jumpstart the party as early as possible. There was a constant humming of people talking that was impossible to make out their words and slowly started to become overwhelming. Yamada reached up and lowered the sound back down as the group stood in line for the bar. Aizawa ordered a beer for him since Hizashi couldn’t understand the server wearing a face mask. Drinks in hand the trio walked over to a corner of the room, a casual distance away from the rest of the guests but not too far as to appear antisocial. Nemuri drank half of hers in one sip before excusing herself to do the rounds.
“This is going great,” Hizashi said to his husband.
“I agree, that leaves only one option for us” Shouta nodded facing his husband
“Pull the fire alarm and escape out the back door?” It wasn’t a real suggestion, but Hizashi was tempted
“I was going to say suffer together, but I think your plan has potential”
Hizashi snorted, imagining the high ground they would lose over their students if they did that. It was bad enough that the two of them were the youngest teachers on campus, they didn’t need to give their students an excuse to start digging through their academic past, or their personal one.
“Too many heroes in the building it wouldn’t work”
“I’m going to pretend I didn’t hear you take Nemuri’s side of that argument” Shouta finished with taking a sip from his glass.
They stood in comfortable silence for a few seconds, Aizawa never being a huge talker and Hizashi not wanting to get carried away and accidentally use his quirk. A few people approached the couple making small talk asking how they knew the couple, at least that’s what Hizashi thought they were asking the main person speaking kept turning their head making it difficult to read their lips. Hizashi was technically the one invited to the weddings and Shouta was his plus one which meant it was his job to inform everyone that he was Present Mic leading to the group talking over each other in excitement making their words lost to the voice hearo. Shouta stepped in, and years of knowing his husband kicked in speaking in that clear and steady speech that he perfected. Eventually, the group grew tired or uninterested in their conversation and excused themselves. The couple was once again left alone.
“So, I have a fun way to traumatize the first years” Yamada started
“Oh” this piqued his husband’s interest, if there was one thing he knew it was that Shouta while wanting to make the next generation of heroes stronger than the last, also that he had a rebellious streak a mile wide.
“Nedzu asked me if I wanted to be the Host for the sports festival this year”
“No, you are not hosting wearing a cheerleader uniform”
“Wasn’t my idea, but that’s a good Plan B. Midnight owes me a favour after I covered her classes last week”
He could see the gears turning in Shouta’s head, thinking of all the potential outcomes.
“I’ll still have to be arena side in case of emergency,” Shouta said.
“Or you could be with me in the announcer booth” Hizashi finished holding out his glass for Shouta to cheer him in return. His husband lifted the glass the sharp ting screeching in his hearing aids. Hizashi sighed in frustration before fully taking the aids out not wanting to keep them in if they weren’t going to be on. He put the devices into his inner pocket knowing that was the safest place for them, as he felt his ears get reacquainted with having nothing in them.
It was for the best that he took them out, from that moment on the night only got louder. Glasses clinking, cheap speakers, a karaoke machine, not to mention some of the bride’s friends were screamers when they were excited. The dinner was nice, and it was only a little awkward when the person he was sitting next to tried to start a conversation with him not realizing Yamada was deaf, Shouta stepped in effortlessly as usual translating for the man who turned out to be a huge Present Mic fan. Uwabami and her husband stopped by their table to thank them for coming. They had a brief conversation neither of the newlyweds knowing much sign language, but Uwabami made the effort to learn the sign for thank you for coming which Hizashi appreciated.
The only good part of the cheap speakers was the fact that they were heavy on the base which mean that even though he couldn’t hear the beat he could feel it. After a lovely first dance between the couple, the DJ asked for every couple to step onto the dance floor. Shouta led them out after telling him what was happening. The DJ would play a song and periodically he would say an increment of time and if you’ve been married for that long you stay dancing until they said an amount that was over how long you’ve been married. Hizashi was a little shocked that Uwabami was willing to share some of the spotlight with other married couples on her big day. Forced to follow Shouta’s direction the two of them slow danced until presumably, the DJ called out how long they had been married. Eventually, there was only one elderly couple left on the dance floor and Hizashi quickly recognized the pair as Uwabami’s parents. Everyone applauded at what Hizashi assumed was the end of the song before the lights changed and the heavy base kicked in. He was able to drag Shouta back out onto the dance floor for a few more dances before the grouch got tired of it. Aizawa stalked off the dancefloor, probably in search of more alcohol, but Nemuri quickly took his place grabbing Hizashi’s hands. Her face was flushed either from dancing or alcohol consumption, probably both. She looked at his face and did a double take, the look of shock and disappointment that crossed her face made him smile.
“Surprise” Hizashi laughed while spinning her around to the music. The flashing lights made it difficult to read her lips, but it was safe to figure that she was expecting it to be a different, available man. Taking her hands, he scanned the dance floor pulling her in close before spinning her into a crowd of unsuspecting men. He found his way back to their table where Aizawa was sitting drink in one hand phone in the other, Hizashi sighed seeing this knowing that looking at screens in low lighting was killer for Shouta’s dry eyes. Hizashi leaned over his husband’s shoulder reading the text message, it looked like it was a new lead for one of the cases he was working on. Snatching the phone out of his hand and turning it off Hizashi scolded him while sitting down next to him.
“It’s your night off enjoy it”
Shouta put his drink down pouting at his husband, red was painted over his cheeks from the alcohol in his system. Hizashi tried to hold back a smile at how tipsy his husband was acting. His signs were a little sloppier than when he was sober, and it took him longer to remember the words. Eventually, he told Hizashi that he was looking at a new potential lead for a cold case he was working on.
It’ll still be there in the morning for sober you to deal with. He reminded his counterpart, Hizashi visually saw his husband sigh before dropping his head into his shoulder. He pressed a kiss into his husband’s temple and a soothing hand on his back. Shouta was running on fumes like he often did, pushing himself past his limit multiple times a week. Today his husband was running on about 4 hours of sleep, which is the most he’s gotten since the new school year started.
“Do you want to go home? We’ve made our appearance, ate supper, danced what more is there to do?” He felt Aizawa nod into his shoulder. It put a smile on his face seeing the other man initiate physical contact, Shouta wasn’t the biggest fan of PDA, but after a few drinks and he didn’t care who saw them anymore.
Hizashi stood up helping his husband as he did so and the two made their way to find the couple saying goodbye and their congratulations once more. The newlyweds were on the dance floor and Hizashi got another dance out of his husband. Even though Hizashi hated weddings he loved dancing and would dance for hours if he actually could follow the music. Shouta was no help keeping the beat, while graceful when fighting had two left feet on the dance floor even when sober. They finished the dance walking off the floor, Hizashi chuckling at Shouta clinging to him trying to keep his balance. Hizashi led them to the newlyweds and said their goodbyes and well wishes.
They saw Nemuri on the way out making out with some random guy. He whistled at the two of them causing Shouta to smack him trying to shush him, but he could see his partner laughing. The two of them walked through the parking lot to their car. Helping the drunk man stumble into his seat Hizashi leaned over to buckle him in not trusting that Shouta would be able to do it smoothly. He took his seat on the driver’s side starting the car, he looked at the clock to reveal that it was a little past midnight.
“We’re getting old Shouta” he said turning to look at his husband who was already passed out. Aizawa had his head leaning against the window body fully relaxed. Hizashi smiled at the man reaching over to brush hair out of his face before he put the car in drive and started their trip back home.
