"Why are you hiding in the bathroom?" Eda asked as she entered the aforementioned room.
Raine, who looked like a deer in headlights, simply stared back from the corner they were seated in.
"Oooooookay," Eda said, scooting next to Raine.
"Why- what are you doing?" Raine asked, still staring at Eda with intense nervousness.
"Keeping you company," Eda replied simply.
They sat there silently for a few moments, the sounds of the party raging on outside the only signifier that they hadn't been transported into some horrible bathroom-shaped liminal space or something. It was comfortable, at least as comfortable as sitting on a bathroom floor can be.
"I got overwhelmed by the party…" Raine finally confessed.
"Oh, Sorry I dragged you here then," Eda said sheepishly.
"No no it's okay!" Raine said quickly, "I thought I could handle it, turns out I couldn't."
Eda hummed in acknowledgement and thought for a moment, then asked, "Do you wanna leave?"
"What? Oh no! You seem like your having a good time, I wouldn't want to take you away from that!" Raine exclaimed, "Plus, I'm fine in here."
"In the bathroom?" Eda asked.
"Yeah," Raine said, averting their eyes.
"What if somebody needs to take a crap or something?" Eda asked lightly.
A look of realization spread across Raine's face, immediately followed by them groaning and face palming.
"C'mon, let's ditch this place," Eda said, getting up.
"Are you sure?" Raine asked, looking up from their palm to stare at Eda again.
"Yeah," Eda said, offering a hand to Raine with a playful smirk on her face, "This party's lame anyway."
Raine smiled and took her hand. Then, right as Eda was pulling them up, somebody knocked at the door. Both froze mid lift as a voice came from the other end.
"Hey!" Some guy called, "Can you hurry it up in there!"
"Sorry!" Eda and Raine responded in unison, blushing furiously.
Eda pulled Raine the rest of the way up, and the two left the bathroom as the stranger rushed in and slammed the door behind themself.
The two made their way through the crowd, avoiding other people as much as they could. Raine was ducking down while Eda pulled them along, yelling a few goodbyes to some of her other friends as she did. After a minute or two of pushing through the dimly lit rooms, the pair made it to the front door.
"After you, my good fellow," Eda said, opening the door with an exaggerated bow. Raine giggled and walked through. Eda let go of the door once her partner had safely made it through and jogged a little to catch up with them.
The two made their way to Eda's car. Eda pulled out her keys, unlocked the vehicle and entered on the drivers side. Raine entered right after on the passengers side.
"Sorry again for dragging you there," Eda said half jokingly as she started the car.
"Again, not your fault!" Raine said, "You asked me if I wanted to come, and I said yes! I thought I could handle it and I couldn't, simple as that."
"Heh, I know," Eda said, "Don't know why I keep apologizing."
They drove to Raine's house in kind of awkward silence for a while, not quite sure what else to say.
About halfway through the drive, though, Raine spoke up again, "Thanks for inviting me."
"Huh?" Eda responded, "Oh, uh, your welcome?" That came out as more of a question than she had intended-
"I mean, it's nice to be thought of, you know?" Raine said, blushing slightly, "Even if I didn't have the best time."
Eda smiled at that, glancing over at Raine before the light turned green and they started driving again. At some point Raine fell asleep.
The silence for the rest of the drive was much more comfortable than the one before.
Eventually, the two pulled up to Raine's house.
"We're here!" Eda said, lightly elbowing Raine's shoulder to wake them up.
"Whu-huh?" Raine said groggily as they jolted up, "Oh! Guess I should get out then, heh."
Raine opened the door on their side of the car and got out. They made their way around the car and started towards the front door of their house.
Then, as she watched Raine's retreating back, Eda made a decision.
"Raine, wait!" She yelled, scrambling through her hastily opened car door.
"Huh?" Raine said, turning back just in time to see Eda all but sprinting directly at them.
Eda grabbed Raine's shoulder's roughly with an intense look in her eyes, a red tinge visible in her cheeks. Shit, she hadn't actually thought this far ahead. But Edalyn Clawthorne had never been one to back down, and she wasn't going to start now.
"Uh, can I kiss you?" She stuttered, face getting redder and redder as she spoke.
"I uh- what?" Raine said, their face going red as well.
"Can- can I kiss you?" Eda asked again, more clearly this time.
The two stood there in silence for the fourth time that night, this one weighing down upon them as Raine grasped for words and Eda waited for a response.
Finally, Eda broke their stalemate, "I- it's okay if you don't I ju-"
Eda was cut off, however, by Raine impulsively smashing their lips against hers.
After a moment of shock, Eda closed her eyes and the two melted into a more comfortable position, faces still interlocked. The two stood there like that for what felt like an eternity (but was probably only two minutes), until they eventually separated. Their arms were still wrapped around each other. They stared into each other's eyes for awhile, soaking in all the feelings that had sprung up in that eternity/two minutes of contact. This was by far the best silence either had experienced all night.
Eda was the first to break it, however. "That was," - She paused, searching for a word that could possibly describe the moment the two had just shared - "Woah."
That made Raine giggle a little, which in turn made Eda giggle. Soon, the two were cackling as they leaned into each other. Neither were quite sure why, but it felt good, so they kept going.
After calming down a little, the two stood upright once more. Eda still had a hand on Raine's shoulder, Raine clutching her extended arm with their other hand.
After a moment, Eda cleared her throat and said, "I should, uh, probably get going huh? Since we've got school tomorrow and…stuff."
Raine chuckled awkwardly and said, "Yeah- yeah that's probably a good idea."
The two, not quite ready to let go of eachother, hugged one last time before Eda turned around and started walking back to her car. Raine turned the other way and continued walking to their house.
"Oh!" Eda exclaimed, stopping in her tracks, "One more thing!"
Raine turned around to see Eda sprinting at them for the second time that night, closing their eyes and bracing themself for impact. Eda, however, slowed down when she was a foot away from Raine, walked up to them, and simply planted a gentle kiss on their cheek.
As Raine opened their eyes again, they saw Eda running off to her car.
"See ya tomorrow, Raine!" She called out, smiling brightly.
Raine's face split into a grin as they called back, "Yeah, see ya!"
Raine continued smiling as they continued walking towards their house, turning once they reached the doorstep to watch Eda's retreating car.
