A Little Similar

Summary:

(No prior knowledge of the series required)

Amity and Vee talk while eating lunch, before going shopping together.

Notes:

This series is a collection of oneshots. Each can be read alone, with no knowledge of earlier stories needed.
However these stories do technically take place chronologically, so could be read in that order.

Work Text:

"Can you pass the jam?" Amity asks, eyes not moving from the sandwich she's buttering.
"Sure." Vee responds softly, "Here."
"Thanks." Amity says flatly, she finishes making her sandwich and walk out of the kitchen.

Vee grabs the glass she had been filling with water and walks out of the kitchen, making her way into the living room. She grabs the remote for the television from where it laid on the arm rest of the couch. Turning the TV on as she flopped on the couch, hand gripping tight on the cup.

Sitting, she flips through the channels, tongue sticking out of her mouth slightly. She settles on some old TV drama, one that is almost certainly a rerun.
She leans back, placing the remote on the couch next to her. With the cup of water in one hand she pulls a pack of Hexes Hold'em, flipping a card out of the deck and absorbing its magic.

"What does that taste like?" A voice comes from behind the couch suddenly, "I mean ignore me. It doesn't matter."
Vee turns to see Amity stood behind her, holding a plate with a half-eaten sandwich on it.
"It's kind of hard to explain." Vee starts, "It doesn't exactly have a taste, the magic itself is flavourless. It's more like a feeling."
"Oh."
"The cards make me feel tingly."

Amity walks around the couch and awkwardly sits in the opposite end to Vee.
"So." Amity says weakly, "It doesn't taste like food, from the Demon Realm or otherwise?"
"Yep."
"Huh, I had this weird idea that they would taste somewhat like apple blood."
Vee chuckles lightly, "I wouldn't exactly know, but I don’t think so."

Amity turns to Vee opening her mouth. "You've never had apple blood?" She asks.
Vee looks at her hands, wringing them. "Well between being brought to life by Belos and then fleeing imprisonment by running to the Human Realm, I didn't exactly have time."
"Well.." Amity says, "When we get to home I could get you some. And maybe some other foods."
"Really?"
"It wouldn’t be hard." Amity voices gets quieter as she speaks, "Just don’t eat it if Edric and Emira made it. It didn’t end well for me last time."

The volume of the rerun increases and Vee scrambles for the remote, giving Amity an awkward smile when she does.
"Actually," Amity says voice cutting above the TV, "I was wondering if you could show me around? The town I mean, I know my way around the house."

"Umm, sure." Vee responds, "But why haven't you gotten Luz to do it? She knows the town better than me. And she knows you."

"Well," Amity starts, face going red, "I was kind of hoping I could get her a gift. Since she's been so stressed."

"Oh." Vee exclaims, "I can do that. And I know of a nice gift store in town."

Laughter echoes from the TV, both girls turn to each other confused. Nothing seems to have happened on the TV, just humans laughing for no reason.

"So, umm. Would you like to go then?" Vee says, "It's only noon now, we could go today?"

"Sure."

Amity jumps of the couch and almost runs out of the room, leaving Vee sat there with her eyebrows raised. Vee turns to the half a sandwich sitting on the arm of the couch next to where Amity was.
"Are you going to finish your sandwich?" Vee calls, turning her head to look out of the room.
"I will!" Amity shouts from out of the room.

Amity runs back into, small purple bag slung over her shoulder. She throws herself onto the couch, arms failing frantically as she loses her balance. Falling onto the carpet.

"Skilful." Vee exclaims.
Amity jumps up off the floor, face bright red and grabs the sandwich, wolfing it down in what looks like one bite.

Vee places the Hexes Hold'em cards back in her pocket, and moves into the kitchen. She leaves her cup upside down on the sink and walks towards the front door.
"Ears!" She calls, "And then we should be good to go."

Amity tucks her ears behind her hair and walks to the door, curtsying as Vee holds it open dramatically for her.

Vee and Amity walk down the street in silence. Vee with her phone in hand, as she messages Camila to let her know where they are.

"Have you got any ideas for what you want to get her?" Vee asks as she pockets her phone.
"I have ideas, but they would be Boiling Isle ideas. I don’t know what is here." Amity responds disheartened.
"Well, I guess that’s why we go shopping." Vee exclaims.

"I still can't understand this whole car thing." Amity says, "Why use metal machines fuelled by explosions when you could use a palsiman." Amity coughs, "And it's much better for the environment."
"I guess you have to make do when you don’t have any magic." Vee responds, "Though all this smoke can't be good for the air."

"Do you know of any places that sell books." Amity asks, "I know she's really into Azura but maybe I'll find something else."
"I think the gift store has books, I haven't been inside in a while though." Vee's face turns slightly red as she talks.

"Any particular reason?" Amity says while smirking, "A certain someone works there perhaps?"
"They don't work there." Vee responds quickly.
Amity raises her eyebrow.
"They don’t!" Vee squawks, "They just tend to go there often."
"And you know that because?" Amity teases.
"Fine!" Vee huffs, "Maybe I pass by often and maybe sometimes they walk out when they see me and we talk. It's nothing though, they just like to talk about their favourite comic."

"I'll take your word for it." Amity murmurs.

"And well look at that." Vee exclaims awkwardly, "We're here."
Amity moves into the shop quickly, Vee trailing awkwardly behind her.

"I see why you like this place." Amity exclaims as she darts around between the small but tightly packed aisles. "I'm so going to find Luz something here."

"Vee!" As voice calls from behind Vee, "How are you?"
Vee's face goes red and she turns slowly. "Masha. Hi, hi."
Masha laughs, their fingers gripping the comic they were holding tighter.
"Ah, I mean I'm good, just chilling you know. Doing normal human things." Vee rambles, "And how are you?"
"I'm doing well." Masha responds, "Actually I was just going to walk to the bus, it would be great to walk with you. If you’re going that way of course."

"Oh, well, I would like to. But I'm here to help a friend, so I should probably stay." Vee says.
"I'm going to be a while, you might as well go!" Amity calls from behind a shelf, "There's so many things to look at, no wonder Luz loves this stuff."
"I guess I'll come then." Vee says, "And you could always tell me about that comic."

Vee and Masha exit the store, Masha waving to the register on the way out.
"Well this series centres around a hero who has to hide who they truly are, while still fighting for good." Masha starts, "And I've just got to the part we they have to traverse a cave filled with lava. All while trying to keep their secret."

"Sounds interesting." Vee responds, "Though the most important question of all. Do they have cool outfits?"
"They do." Masha exclaims, pulling open their comic book and flipping to the first pages, "At first I thought this cape was too much, it even drags along the ground. But then the cape was revealed to be a magic projection. That was hiding more potions!"

"I can get behind that." Vee exclaims, "I would love a magic cloak, and some potions."
"I knew you would." Masha laughs, "You do seem to have all the vibes of someone magic."

"Haha, ha," Vee chuckles awkwardly, "I don’t think I'm good enough for that though."
"Sure you are. And you've even got the smile to back it up." Masha says, "Well this is my stop. Thanks for the company."
"Of course." Vee responds, eyes focusing on the ground as she smiles.
"And I think you need to get back to your friend, seeing as she is running to catch us." Masha smiles, "Bye Vee."
"Bye Masha."

Masha steps onto the bus and Vee can only stare as it whisks them away. She still staring at where the bus was when Amity arrives, puffing and out of breath.
"I found the best gift." She pants, "I just forgot to bring some snails. Do you have some?"

Vee chuckles, "I have some money. Let's get you that gift."

Notes:

I feel like that might be a bit out of character.
The way I characterised Vee was not the way she was presented in Thanks To Them, I did try to lean into that as much as I could though.

Thanks for reading!
