Work Text:
It was summer, more specifically August .
Nagi liked summer. It wasn’t super cold so he wouldn’t shiver as he played a game bundled up in a ball in his chair at his computer.
Though it was hot. Nothing opening the window can’t fix.
Well…maybe not. It felt like Nagi was in a blast furnace.
“Aaaaah!” Nagi groaned, “I’m going to die!” He complained to no one at all. Nagi lived by himself, he spent most days by himself. Unless his friends went to his apartment and dragged him out.
Like this day.
…
..
.
“Nagi!” A voice shouted, as a hand banged against his front door, “Nagi!!” The voice shouted once more, the banging never lightening up.
“We know you’re home!” Another voice chimed in.
Nagi sighed, and he crawled out of bed, shutting his phone off in the process.
He walked through the hall made his way to the front door and greeted the nuisances.
“What?”
“Hurry up and get ready Nagi!” Bachira cheered, he pushed Nagi into his house, the others following behind, “We’re going to the Festival!” He buzzed.
“That sounds like a pain, Bachira.” Nagi groaned, he’d much rather lie in bed and continue to play games. Nagi noticed a familiar head of black hair and long eyelashes, “They got you too, Rin? There really is no hope.” He asked, mumbling the second sentence.
Bachira and Chigiri laughed, “It’ll be fun!”
Chigiri rummaged through Nagi’s closet while Bachira played with his hair.
“Is this really necessary..?”
“Yes!” Isagi shouted as he walked over to help Chigiri.
Rin took a seat next to Nagi, “How’d they get you?”
“Threatened me.” Rin answered bluntly, “They threatened to tell Sae I was being “emo” again. I would rather die than get scolded over that again.”
Rin could only shiver as he remembered what happened last time they told Sae. Sae was like a second— third ? parent.
“Plus, I get away from Shidou so I guess it’s not that bad.”
“ Rin thinking positively? Never thought the day would come.” Bachira commented with a giggle.
“Shut it.”
Bachira only laughed more at his response.
“Here.” Chigiri placed a yukata that Nagi hasn’t worn in over a year—or two, down on the bed, “Change into that and we can leave… and stop messing with his hair Bachira!”
“Wait!! I’m doing something.”
Bachira placed a bee clip in Nagi’s hair, pushing some of his bangs out of his face.
“How many of those do you have?” Isagi asked, semi-shocked, now that Nagi paid attention most of them had the same clip in their own hair.
“A lot.” Bachira giggled in response.
These events are the reason that Nagi was dragged out of his house, in a car, and with a very dangerous driver. Nagi was swaying left and right at every harsh turn bumping into both Chigiri and Isagi.
“Who let him drive?” Rin asked harshly, as they finally parked, in a random parking lot near where the festival was taking place.
“It is his car…” Isagi mumbled.
Bachira happily hopped out of the driver's seat, “Do you not like my driving, Rin-chan? Rude, I was your uber here.”
“You almost killed us.”
“Almost!”
Bachira laughed as he walked ahead of the group, practically jumping with each step and they inched closer and closer.
“This is going to be so fun!” Disagree.
This entire— thing— was already a hassle and they haven’t even properly arrived yet. If Nagi was quiet enough maybe he could sneak back home. But that was too far away, and walking all the way there would be a hassle, “My legs would get tired.” Nagi thought to himself.
The group had finally properly arrived.
“The food smells so good!” Bachira commented, “Oo! Oo! The decorations are so pretty too!”
“They are…it’ll look prettier when the sun sets though…”
“True!” Isagi agreed.
It was loud, noisy, only because there were so many people. As Nagi said at least a hundred times before, he’d much rather be playing games right now in the comfort of his bed.
“Ooh! Rin-chan! Look over there!” Bachira pointed to a plush of a black cat, with bright teal eyes, “That cat looks like you.”
“It does not.”
“Yes it does.”
“Does not.”
“Does.”
Rin could only sigh, giving up on the argument. It was impossible to argue with Bachira over anything.
“That one looks like Nagi.” Chigiri said he was pointing to a different cat next to the Rin cat . This cat had white fur, and its eyes were shut as if it were sleeping.
“It does!”
“Let’s go try that!” Bachira pointed in some direction, definitely towards food. I doubt he’d want to eat something that wasn’t food. Actually maybe he would. It was Bachira after all.
The other four followed Bachira as he dragged them around the festival.
Nagi found himself absorbed in everything that wasn’t the group. He was looking around, eyes latching onto anything that was somewhat flashy.
It began to rain. Great. Of course it did and none of them were in real rain attire.
He heard the sound of running footsteps against the dirt that was now turning to mud. As he turned his head to the source and he was utterly blown away.
A boy ran past, around his age, his hair was purple, tied into a top knot. That’s not what blew Nagi away. It was his beautiful face. Nagi was completely infatuated by this boy. His features are perfect, all of it, to his shining purple eyes, his nose, chiseled jawline, and those luscious pink lips.
If God had favorites he was definitely one of them .
In that moment everything stopped, from the voices around him. Nagi’s entire attention was turned to this alluring person.
Nagi swore the rain clouds ran away in that moment, and the blinding summer sky began to shine down upon them once again.
Nagi needed to know who he was.
“Isagi…” He nudged the shorters shoulder, “Isagi.” He said once more, grabbing his attention.
“What?”
“Look.” Nagi pointed to the purple-haired boy, “Who is that?”
“Why would I know, Nagi?” Isagi asked unamused. Okay , maybe Nagi’s question was stupid, but he needed to know! “What prompted this question anyways?”
Nagi didn’t answer.
“Oh my, does Nagi here have a crush .”
“Shut up, I don’t like him, I haven’t even met him.”
“But you think he’s cute, huh?”
“Maybe.”
“Haha! Knew it!” Isagi teased, “Here…”
Isagi walked a little further ahead, away from the group, Nagi trailing a little further behind. What was he doing? Isagi stopped in his tracks as he grew closer to where the purple-haired boy had stopped running, he was panting, out of breath, and looking around for something.
Isagi took a breath and then opened his mouth.
Nagi really wished he hadn’t.
“Hey you!” Isagi shouted, Nagi felt himself melt into a puddle in that moment, he prayed that the pretty boy didn’t notice.
The boy turned his head and then he quickly looked away. Nagi tried to cover Isagi’s hand with his mouth, but it was too late, “Yeah you! With the purple hair!”
The purple haired boy turned his head once more at the sound of Isagi’s shout. He pointed to himself and mouthed inaudibly, me?
Isagi nodded quickly and jogged over to the boy, “My friend thinks you’re cute! He was wondering if you’d want to spend the rest of the festival with him?” He turned his head around and pointed to Nagi who was a blushing mess.
Nagi was going to kill Isagi. Why would he do this?!
The boy was silent for a few seconds as he processed the situation, “Sure!” He smiled, and fuck , Nagi might’ve just died. This boy really was the most beautiful person Nagi’s ever seen.
Nevermind, I need to thank Isagi for this later.
..
That event led Nagi to his current situation.
The two walked next to each other awkwardly, shoulder to shoulder. It was much different without Nagi’s wingman around.
“I—“ They said at the same time.
“Sorry, sorry, you go first.” The purple haired boy apologized.
“I’m sorry too…you should go first though.”
He smiled once more, and Nagi swore he felt his heart explode, “Well…if you insist. I’m Mikage Reo, but you can call me Reo!”
“Mikage..?” Oh shit, this guy was the heir to that huge Mikage company…
“Haha! Yeah…it’s not a big deal though.”
Not a big deal? You’re an heir to a 705.8 billion yen corporation. What do you mean, “not a big deal.”
Nagi wanted to say that, but he was too shocked to do so. The guy Isagi helped set him up with was practically famous.
“Don’t be nervous just because I’m a Mikage… please.” He asked, mumbling the please.
“Sorry… Reo .” He loved the way his first name sounded on his tongue, “Oh! And I’m Nagi Seishiro.” He scrambled to say.
“It’s nice to meet you, Nagi .”
“Is it fine for you to be here with me? You kind of… abandoned all your friends.”
”Huh. Yeah. It’s fine, they would’ve wanted me here instead anyways.”
The two walked around, in an uncomfortable silence, neither knowing what to say.
“Is what he said true—your friend?” Reo asked, breaking the silence between the two.
“Huh?”
Nagi swore he got dumb around Reo, he’d forget anything and everything but Reo.
“About you thinking I’m cute..? ” He asked, obviously flustered by the statement.
“Oh!” Nagi remembered, and mentally yelled at himself for forgetting, “Yeah. You’re super attractive y’know.”
Where did he get this newfound confidence from?
I mean he had the chance, might as well take it, he was just saying what was on his mind.
“You’re pretty attractive yourself.”
Now it was Nagi’s turn to be flustered. He never expected Reo to compliment him back.
“We should get in the shade though. The rain is starting to come down pretty hard.”
Nagi had completely forgotten about the rain. He swore it had stopped raining the minute Reo ran past him.
The two made it to a park only a short distance away from where the festival was actually taking place. They took shelter under a tree— well it didn’t shelter the rain very well as it came down even harder.
Reo sighed, “I knew I should’ve checked the weather.” He laughed. Nagi may have died for a third—fourth—he had lost count. Reo was going to kill him. Nagi would do anything to hear that laugh again.
“Nagi!” Reo shouted, he grabbed Nagi’s hands, and pulled him out from under the tree, “Come dance with me!”
“Reo! What’re we doing? What about getting wet?”
“Dance! We’re bound to end up soaked, so dance!”
Reo held Nagi’s hand’s in his own as he spun the two around in messy circles, almost slipping a few times on the wet grass below them.
For the first time that night, in a while actually, the corners of his mouth lifted up into a soft smile.
“You should do that more..” Reo said shyly, when Nagi tilted his head in confusion Reo continued speaking, “ Smiling . It looks good on you.”
Nagi hadn’t even realized the action until Reo pointed it out.
“Maybe…only around you though.”
“Am I special ?”
“Oh definitely.”
In that instance, he knew it— no —Nagi knew the moment he saw Reo. When Reo ran past him in a hurry. That no one would ever come close. There would be no one like him.
Reo continued to spin them around until both were extremely dizzy, he still held Nagi’s hands in his own as the two continued to dance. It looked more like the two moving around strangely.
“I like you.” Nagi blurted out, maybe it wasn’t good to say everything on his mind.
Nagi never believed in love at first sight. Well.
If he was being honest, he had never even felt these type of emotions towards a person before. Not until—until Reo ran past him. That moment playing over and over again in his brain.
Reo’s expression changed, his eyes widened, and he looked at Nagi dumbfounded, Nagi could also feel a shake in the hands that held his own.
“But you just met me…” Reo said, “…well I do like you too, Nagi. Don’t rush things though!”
Reo was right. They had just met, but now it was confirmed Nagi had a chance!
Reo laughed, “Don’t look at me like that! You didn’t say anything bad!”
In all honesty, Nagi hadn’t even processed the facial expressions he was making, all of his attention diverted to Reo.
“Sorry…my bad, Reo.”
“Don’t apologize.” Reo pulled Nagi’s hands towards him, pulling them closer than before, he tore their hands apart, and flicked Nagi on the forehead, “You apologize too often.”
“Sorry—no! Sorry—I my bad…” Nagi couldn’t help himself, he was so nervous, he wanted to be just as perfect as Reo was.
All of these were emotions he never felt all that often. Reo made him a different person, not that he was complaining though.
Reo giggled, “It’s fine, loosen up.” He said sticking out his tongue. He turned his head away before grabbing Nagi’s hand once more, “I can give you a ride home.”
“No.” Nagi answered, Reo looked over at him confused, “I want to spend more time with you.”
“Was that too straightforward?”
“No. I do too, but it's raining badly. You’ll see me again, I promise.”
…
..
.
Nagi recounted what happened after Isagi left to Isagi. Reo hadn’t lied either, when Nagi woke up the next morning, he found a phone number written on paper on his nightstand. He didn’t remember going inside—even arriving home…must’ve fallen asleep.
Did Reo carry him? He was asleep during that? Nagi just had the worst luck.
“Have you texted him yet?” Isagi asked, it was the next morning for context. Isagi had come to check on Nagi after not finding him at the festival last night when they were heading home.
“No. I don’t know what to say.”
He had already added the number to his contacts, but he had yet to text him.
“Say like… good morning! How’d you sleep!”
“That sounds dumb.”
“It’s a start!”
“Fine.”
He clicked on the contact, Reo <3, and started a conversation.
Nagi :x
good morning reo
Nagi :x
how’d you sleep?
Nagi waited impatiently, he spent every second anticipating a response, he already wanted to see Reo again, hold his hand, and hear the beautiful laugh.
“Why do you look like that?” Isagi asked, Nagi gave him a confused look, “That face. Ew.”
“Hah?”
“Maybe you being in love is bad, I’ve never seen you show so many facial expressions, and this one is particularly ugly.” He said in a teasing tone.
Nagi scoffed and went back to staring at his phone. Soon enough it lit up followed by the sound of a ding.
Reo <3
I slept great hbu?
Nagi felt his fingers type quicker than they ever have before, when it came to Reo things weren’t a hassle nor a pain.
Nagi :x
i did too
Nagi :x
when can i see you again?
Reo <3
So soon?
Reo <3
Only joking
Reo <3
Today if you’re free
Nagi :x
i am
Nagi :x
what would you like to do?
Nagi was completely ignoring Isagi, drowning out the sound of his voice, and every movement he made.
Reo <3
Want to get food? We could get to know each other better <3
That heart might’ve killed Nagi, well not a heart, more specifically an angle bracket and the number three.
Nagi :x
yes. i’d love that
Reo <3
I can pick you up if you’d like, 17:30 work?
Nagi :x
yeah
“Wow!” Isagi said, dragging out the word, “Got yourself a date!”
A date, huh, I do.
“Mhm..”
Nagi couldn’t wait.
He wished Isagi wasn’t there when the plans were made because now he’s sitting on his bed like yesterday, Chigiri rummaging through his closet, and Isagi helping Chigiri pick an outfit.
“Do I really have to get all dressed up..?”
“He’s a Mikage, doofus.”
“Don’t call me that. It’s mean princess.” Nagi commented, he laid down on his back as his friends tried to find the best outfit.
“This works…?” Isagi asked Chigiri, unsure, “There isn’t much to choose from.”
“Yeah… I guess.”
“Why do you guys sound so unsure?”
Chigiri rolled his eyes walking over to Nagi, putting the articles of clothings against his chest, “Your wardrobe sucks. You have like three options.”
Nagi groaned in complaint, and he grabbed the clothes from Chigiri.
“Lookin’ good.” Isagi whistled.
“Better than usual.” Chigiri commented, “When is he supposed to get here?”
“Five-thirty, so in like an hour.”
Chigiri and Isagi made their way towards the door, giving Nagi the extra time to mentally prepare for the date, “I wish you luck!”
Nagi nodded and shut the door behind them.
It wasn’t much longer until Nagi heard his phone dinging and displaying a message from Reo reading, I’m here!
Nagi made his way outside, a long limo, the same one Nagi rode home in last night was waiting outside.
“Hi, Nagi.” Reo greeted him as he took a seat in the car, “Told you, you’d see me again.” He stuck his tongue out at Nagi.
“You did, Reo, hi.”
The two were driven not too far away, to an expensive looking restaurant, did Nagi have enough money to eat here?
They were sat at a two person table, sitting across from one another, and Nagi could only admire Reo’s features instead of reading the menu.
“You can order anything you want. I’ll pay.” Reo said blunty.
“You sure..?”
“Mhm!”
The two ordered appetizers, drinks, and their food, and then began the conversation about each other.
“So what do you do, school…work?”
“I’m in University, business and stuff, my parents said I’d make a lot of money.” Nagi answered, “I want to retire early, and live the rest of my life doing nothing.”
Reo nodded his head along with each word Nagi said. He took a sip of his drink which sat in front of him. He opened his mouth once more and began to speak, “If you don’t mind me asking, why?”
“Everythings a pain…” Not you though.
Reo nodded once more, “I have to take over the company.”
“Why do you sound so upset?”
“The company is boring, I’m bored.” Reo answered, “I wasn’t yesterday though…” He moved his hand over so the tips of his fingers were touching Nagi’s own.
“My life has been full of boredom until I met you. The dance in the rain, the ride home together, everything. Even now I feel the same excitement—thrill.”
Reo interlaced their pointer fingers, and then looked up from the table to Nagi’s deep brown eyes.
Nagi didn’t know what to say, he stared at Reo in awe.
“You don’t have to respond if it was too much…”
Nagi shook his head quickly, “It wasn’t.” He shut his mouth once more still processing the words that left Reo’s mouth, “I—sorry, ‘m not good with words.” Nagi mumbled.
Reo laughed, “You scared me. I thought I said something wrong.”
“Sorry…”
“Don’t apologize so much. You don’t do anything wrong.” He flicked Nagi’s hand with his finger, “I told you that yesterday too.”
Nagi nodded, he ate his food with his free hand, and drank his drink as he listened to Reo talk. Reo should’ve been a narrator, or one of those people who read books. His voice kept Nagi’s attention. He was captivated by every word Reo had to say.
“So…”
“So…”
“Do you want to come back to my place?” Nagi asked, when he saw Reo’s face grow red, “Not like that…”
Reo smiled, “I know…and yes. I’d like to.”
“You’re so trusting. You just met me yesterday and you already want to come to my house. What if I was a dangerous person?”
“I can tell you’re not. You’re a great person, Nagi.”
Reo paid the bill and the two were back in the car driving back to Reo’s apartment, but this time Reo was staying rather than going home.
Nagi took off his shoes by the door, Reo doing the same, and the two made their way further in the house.
“It’s kind of small..”
“It’s perfect. Very home-like.”
“Is that a bad thing?”
Reo smiled and shook his head, ‘ no.’
Nagi swore his heart exploded everytime Reo smiled. He had never felt emotions like these before. Yet, he never wanted them to stop.
“Come sit.” Nagi said, he patted the seat on the gray couch next to him. Reo listened and he walked over to the couch taking the seat next to Nagi. The two close, but only holding hands. They hadn’t shown any other affection than that since that night.
Except for Nagi being carried, but he wasn’t sure that actually happened.
“Thank your friend for me, will you? The black haired one.”
“Huh? Why?”
Reo flicked his forehead, “For introducing you to me. Like I said at the restaurant, I’m really glad I met you. I’ve never met anyone like you.”
“What do you mean?”
Reo turned his head away, “Don’t make me explain …it’s embarrassing. You’re just different. You make me feel so many feelings.”
Nagi felt himself smile again as Reo turned his head back over. Reo grabbed his phone from his pocket quickly, unlaced their fingers, and quickly took a picture.
“What’re you doing, Reo?”
Nagi put his hands in front of his face as Reo pushed the camera closer and closer to his face, “Taking a picture. Let me see you smile!”
“Embarrassing…” Nagi mumbled, he faced his body away from Reo.
“Please.” I can’t say no to you.
“Fine.”
Nagi turned back around and faced Reo, a soft smile that was barely there present on his face . Reo quickly snapped a picture, the sound of the camera click echoing through the room.
“What are you going to do with the picture?”
”Wallpaper.”
Nagi grew embarrassed, “Seriously?” Reo nodded, Nagi needed to get a picture of Reo for his own wallpaper later.
Reo was beaming, a wide smile, displaying his teeth. Nagi’s features softened as he saw this expression on Reo’s face.
“I wish I met you sooner…”
He did not intend to say that aloud.
Reo’s eyes grew wide, and he became flustered, “Don’t—Don’t say stuff like that out of nowhere!” Reo stuttered out, “I agree though..”
Nagi held Reo’s hand tightly as he faced him, “I know you said not to rush things…” Reo’s face only became a deeper shade of red as those words left, “…but would it be too soon to say you’re the most important person in the world—in my life.”
Reo used his free hand to cover his face. Nagi never fook his eyes off of Reo, Reo was so breathtaking.
“Yes…no…why?”
“I’m just saying what’s on my mind.” Nagi answered, “The moment I saw you running at the festival…you had me completely smitten , Reo. I knew at that moment that there was going to be nobody like you. I still believe that. Every moment with you is different than with anyone else…”
“Stop.” Reo held his hand out and covered Nagi’s mouth, “You’re going to make my heart explode if you keep saying stuff like that.”
“But it’s true.” Nagi said, the words slightly muffled by Reo’s hand.
Reo couldn’t even look Nagi in the eyes anymore, “ Do you even know how you’re making me feel?”
He removed his hand from Nagi’s mouth, and met his eyes once more, “Probably the same way you make me feel, yeah?” His tone of voice was deep and passionate. He was yearning for Reo, he needed to touch him, hug him, he needed Reo.
Reo nodded slowly, and slowly inched closer towards Nagi.
“What happened to taking things slow?” Nagi asked, with a slight tease in his voice.
“Forget that.”
Nagi closed the gap between the two, their lips locking, the kiss was filled with need and desire. Nagi had to do this since the moment he saw him.
Reo wrapped his arms around Nagi’s neck, caging him in and pulling him closer. Nagi did the same, except wrapping his arms around Reo’s waist.
The kiss ended only a few seconds later, Nagi swore he was going to die, for real this time.
Nagi hasn’t felt so happy in his life.
He pulled Reo into a hug. He held him tight, never wanting to let go. Nagi knew it—he was right—Reo was different, and he was the best person Nagi has ever met.
“So, is it too soon to say that you’re the most important person in my life?”
Reo shook his head, a bubbly laugh leaving his lips, as he relaxed into the hug.
“I like you so much, Reo.”
“I do too, Nagi.”
“I'm so happy.”
“Me too…”
That summer Nagi meant the most important person in the world.
“You’ve stolen my heart, Reo.”
Reo giggled, “You’re not getting back.”
Nagi swore he would never find someone else like him.
“I like you sosososo much, Reo.”
