Chapter Text
Wednesday glided silently down the hall. Her boots were clutched tightly in her left hand as she shuffled along, her socks sliding against the wooden floor. She allowed a small upturn at the corner of her mouth. She did so enjoy sneaking. This brought back pleasant memories of stalking her family members as a child, the similarly smooth floors of the Addams Family Manor allowing her to skate along without the sound of footsteps being heard.
Inching up to the door, she carefully placed an ear against it and listened carefully for any hint of noise coming from within.
Silence.
Excellent.
That meant that Enid was most likely asleep.
She entered quietly, ears remaining alert for the smallest of sounds in case she needed to back out quickly. Thankfully she’d had the forethought to ask Thing to oil the door hinges to avoid any squeaks.
The room was dim, but the soft glow of the lamp on her writing desk allowed enough light for her to see. She glanced over to Enid’s bed fully expecting to see the werewolf curled up in her many vomit inducing blankets. It was empty.
Where the hell is Enid?
She frowned and took a step closer, hoping she’d somehow missed her roommate buried amongst the plushies. No. Enid was definitely not there.
A pang of concern went through her as she quickly scanned the room. It was late. And it was cold outside. Enid detested the cold. Normally, she kept track of her roommate at all times but given she was currently trying to avoid said roommate she’d let herself become a bit lax in her monitoring.
So where was she?
They weren’t allowed to visit the dorms of other students past 10pm. Enid always followed the rules. She said she got to see her friends all day and… Wednesday felt her throat tighten as she swallowed guiltily… and she’d said that this was their ‘roommate bonding time’. That she’d never want to miss that.
Wednesday could barely breathe. Had she driven Enid away by avoiding her? Surely not. Enid was so damn persistent, she wouldn’t have just up and left, right?
She turned to Thing “It’s not a full moon right?” Frowning again as he tapped out a negative.
She could feel the sharp tendrils of panic crawling up her throat. What if something happened? She’d never forgive herself if something happened to Enid. Oh god, was it the stalker? What if she had been ambus…
“Wednesday.”
Wednesday spun around so fast that her braids snapped against her back like whips. She managed to keep a mostly deadpan look on her face but she was sure her widened eyes gave away her surprise. The overwhelming mix of shock and relief was making her heart jump and dance around her chest just like Pugsley when she threw him into poison ivy that one time.
How had… how on earth had Enid caught her by surprise? How did she not hear anything?
She carefully reined in her shock and tried desperately to calm her racing heart. Enid could’t hear it, right?
“Enid.” She greeted evenly.
Enid was leaning up against the door with an annoyed expression.
Wednesday’s eyes narrowed. Enid was blocking the door. Crap. A quick escape was not an option.
“You’re avoiding me.”
“Enid, I…”
“Every night you sneak in after I’m asleep, you get up early and disappear before I’m awake and every time I see you in the corridors you seem to magically disappear in the other direction. I thought we were friends Wednesday!”
The outburst finished with a high pitched whine accompanied by a petulant stomp of her foot. The sudden movement causing her blue and pink tipped blonde locks to swing violently. Enid huffed angrily as she crossed her arms tight across her chest and fixed icy blue eyes into a glare directed at Wednesday.
Oh, may the devil take her soul now. Angry Enid was so adorable.
“It’s complicated….”
“It always is with you isn’t it? I’ve been waiting silently for hours because I knew if you heard me awake you’d scurry off again!”
“I do not scurry.” Wednesday replied looking offended at the very thought.
She took deep breathe. She had to distract Enid, get her back to her cheery self and hopefully she’d forget all about this…
“I must say, you were very impressive Enid. It is very rare for someone to catch me unawares. I did not hear you at all.”
Yes, butter her up. She was clearly angry. Compliments should help.
Enid was still glaring but allowed herself a small smirk. “Yes, you weren’t very quiet actually. I could hear you all the way down the hall. What were you doing? Sliding your feet? Why didn’t you just lift them and walk like a normal person? I probably would have thought it was just the dorm mom passing by. Instead you sounded like an incredibly suspicious person trying to sneak in.”
“I thought I was being silent!” Wednesday hissed “It’s not my fault you have werewolf ears.”
Enid glared at her in silence for a few more moments. Wednesday stared impassively back, her sharp eyes noting every minuscule change in Enid’s expression. She saw the moment those icy blue eyes started to grow glassy, the smallest of quivers starting in her bottom lip…
No. Oh no. Don’t let her cry, don’t cry, don’t cry….
Too late.
Tears welled up in the wolf’s eyes and started to spill over. “Do you not want to be friends anymore?” She said in a small voice.
She looked heartbroken. Wednesday’s stomach churned unpleasantly.
Wednesday swallowed nervously as she felt guilt coursing through her veins at Enid’s sad expression. She felt like she’d kicked a puppy. Actually, Enid was a wolf… so she had literally kicked a puppy. She had emotionally kicked a fucking puppy. Even the most depraved of Addamses wouldn’t stoop so low as to kick a puppy.
“Enid, I… I’m sorry if you are upset. I just do not think it is a good idea for me to be near you. You… you make me sick.”
Uh oh.
Wednesday took a nervous step back when she saw Enid’s eyes flash golden and heard a low growl come from deep in her throat.
Probably should have phrased that differently.
“Excuse me? I make you sick? I didn’t realise I disgusted you so much Wednesday.” Enid snarled at her.
Oh curses. She’d just escalated to throwing a grenade at a puppy.
“Enid, I didn’t mean it like that…”
“Then what did you mean Wednesday? Because I think you said it pretty clearly.”
Wednesday could not tear her eyes away from Enid. She’d never seen her look so… unhinged. She was trembling with barely contained rage, low growls rumbling out at she pinned Wednesday with brilliant golden eyes, waiting for a response. Wednesday half expected her to transform. Those sharp claws were extended and just begging to sink into some unsuspecting prey.
Wednesday shivered at the thought. Enid was truely magnificent.
Hidden under all that raw power and fury, it was the sound of a miserable little sniffle that did her in. Wednesday’s heart clenched, and not in the pleasant way that she’d come to associate with Enid lately. The guilt she felt at upsetting Enid was horrendous. She could not, would not, put Enid through this emotional rollercoaster. Clearly she was going to have to explain her… embarrassing dilemma in detail.
She took a few steps towards Enid before hesitantly reaching out her hand and awkwardly patting her on the shoulder. Her eyes widened when she realised what she was doing and she quickly whipped her arm away in horror. She chanced a quick glance at Enid to see her eyes fading back to ocean blue as she looked at Wednesday with a bemused expression.
“I did not mean it the way it sounded Enid. You are… important to me. I also consider us to be ‘besties’ as you so ineloquently put it. That is why it pains me greatly that I must avoid you. You see, I am experiencing terrible symptoms when in your presence. I strongly suspect some sort of curse or perhaps an unfortunate allergy to werewolves. Although, I have yet to find any other cases where a human was unable to tolerate the presence of a werewolf so perhaps it will require further…”
“Wednesday!” Enid interrupted her with an exasperated sign. “You seriously think you are allergic to me? What symptoms do you have?”
Wednesday frowned “well, allergy is just one possibility. There is also a chance of a curse. When you hug me it seems to trigger a fever spike, I get warm all over and my insides seem to be churning. My hands sweat, my heart pounds, I feel shaky and I loose all concentration. Lately, I get the same symptoms even by just being in close proximity to you. When you ask me to do something I find myself… compelled to comply. Even when I detest what the request may be. That definitely implies so sort of curse although I do not believe you would curse me. I hope you can see now why I need to put some distance between us.”
She glanced up at Enid and was surprised to see an unreadable expression on her face. She no longer looked sad, or angry…. in fact Wednesday was unable to decipher what Enid was thinking at all. What a terrifying thought.
Enid let out a deep breathe as she rubbed her fingers against her temples. “So… let me get this straight. You’ve been avoiding me because I make you feel… uh… warm and shaky. And you feel… compelled to cater to my requests.”
“Yes, at a rudimentary level, that is correct. I also find myself consumed by thoughts of you even when you are not present. You can understand how puzzling this is.”
Enid eyed Wednesday carefully. “Wednesday, you know what you’re describing is… I mean it sounds like…”
She trailed off as Wednesday tilted her head and looked at her curiously, confusion evident on her face.
“You are familiar with such symptoms?”
Enid eyes softened considerably as she looked at her. “Wednesday. I’m 99% sure I know what you are experiencing. It’s not an, uh, uncommon… sickness.”
Wednesday’s eyes lit up. “Really? You’ve heard of this before? How did I not find anything in my research? Is it related to werewolves specifically? Fascinating. Is there a cure?”
Enid stared at her, lost for words. “I, uh, there’s sort of a cure I guess…”
“What is it? Do you have it? Can you give it to me?” Wednesday demanded.
She paused in confusion to see Enid was blushing furiously.
Oh dear. Was it contagious? Did Enid have it too?
“What?”
Wednesday stared at Enid feeling an increasing sense of apprehension. Enid was looking at her with a look she had never seen before. Her blue eyes were darker than normal and the look she was giving Wednesday contained a previously unseen softness that made the bats in Wednesday’s stomach flutter extra hard.
She’s never looked at me like this before. She must think I’m going to die.
