Being On Watch

Summary:

Rodney and Severus sat together in the firelight, as they had the second watch.

Notes:

For No True Pair on Dreamwidth Day 3 - Rodney McKay & Severus Snape by firelight

I'm tagging this as part of my "Finding a New Home" series because it kinda fits there. But you only need to know that Harry and Severus fled England, and Ministry, and ended up in Atlantis.

Work Text:

Rodney and Severus sat together in the firelight, as they had the second watch. They were on P29-147, also known as 'Maxe' where they hoped to find an Ancient outpost. At least the Ancient database on Atlantis indicated there should be one. The planet had a twenty-eight-ish hour day, so they estimated night to be about ten hours. Give or take.

So far, they had no luck at all finding anything resembling an outpost, although they knew it might be hidden and could not be found from the air. They had spent the day flying in spiraling circles with the Gate as the center. Nothing pinged. They also found no people.

"Those are good eating," Ronon pointed out a herd of four-legged animals on a plain.

"Good to know," John replied. "We can send a team back to get one for testing out." They had learned, the hard way, that just because Pegasus natives could eat something not to assume that it was safe for people from Earth.

John had decided they could spend the night and use the Jumper as a lean-to as they camped out. The weather in this location was clear, and being able to open the Jumper let them spread out more than sleeping in the Jumper itself would allow. They were on the other side of the ocean from the Gate, and there was a range of mountains that Rodney wanted to check before giving up their search.

"Want to roast a marshmallow?" Rodney asked, holding out a bag. "Or just eat one? Or two?"

Severus shook his head. "Too sweet for my taste and I do not see the appeal. Although I am surprised you have any left after Harry dug into them earlier."

"I brought a second bag," Rodney admitted. "Teyla loves marshmallows, too, and I figured if I wanted to have any, I'd need to have more than the one bag."

"Ah!" Severus nodded. "Good planning."

"Chocolate bar?" Rodney offered. "It's the good stuff, not the cheap bars I left for the others. I know you won't just inhale it without tasting. If we had anything that resembled graham crackers, we could make 'smores, but that's not going to happen. At least not today."

"I will, thank you," Severus replied, taking the bar from Rodney. He delicately unwrapped the bar and took a bite of the end before re-wrapping the bar to save the rest for later. "This is good."

Rodney nodded. "Glad you like it. I have more coming on the next Daedalus run."

Severus stood up and threw a log on the fire from the stack they had gathered during daylight. "I feel the need to move about and I will walk the perimeter." Which mostly meant walking around the outside of Jumper. They had kept their camp small and easy to guard. Even without finding native people they took every precaution, this was Pegasus, after all.

----

John and Rodney had dithered about turning the cloak and shield on but Rodney pointed out that there was nothing larger than a squirrel on the Life Signs Detector for a significant area around them. John had sighed and given in. But he had also given Rodney the remote that would turn on the cloak and shield as John and Ronon had gotten Rodney and Severus up for their turn at watch.

"Pass this on to Harry and Teyla when you get them up," John had said firmly.

----

Rodney nodded. "I'll do the next round. Got your communicator?"

"I do," Severus replied. "It won't take long and I will be careful."
