Work Text:
"Zane, try it again" the female nindroid repeated, trying to get the Hydro-Bounty back into operation again.
"Rerouting power, now" Zane did, but instead of getting something good, the lights blacked out, automatically activating the hazard lights.
"oh no-" Pixal gasped, Hoping from before it wouldn't happen, but it did.
"I was afraid of that.." Zane had hoped for the same thing, but they kept insisting and this had to happen anytime soon.
"Well.. that didn't work" Jay popped up behind their backs, already just expecting that "what now?"
"We just used the last of our power, it wasn't enough.." Pixal informed, defeated.
"We're taking on water, the sub's flooding!" Lloyd warned "there's gotta be something else that we can try.."
Jay took the opportunity for all the three of them being busy, finding another method, or at least stubbornly trying until something, miraculously, would start again.
"While you guys are thinking, I'll go.. um- go down, and get the oxygen tanks"
And he got down, lucky wanted, he had enough time from them to figure it out, swim in the aisle of the ship, and lock himself inside the cabin, locking the handle, and pulling out the battery.
Having never done something like this directly by passing his lightning, through a battery, with his gloves and only hands, he had second thoughts, knowing himself that it was dangerous what he was about to do. Especially when electricity was in direct contact with water.
but it was for Nya. Jay could not allow himself to let go of time, wait for the divine hope that the battery would settle on its own, and leave her and his mother-in-law to a hypothetical fate, of which he did not even know what it could entail. Therefore, in preference to stay with his arms crossed, swing loopledly left and right in a chair, increasing more anxiety and spending too much non-permissive time.
after several denials at him for his idea on recharge it with his power, supported by Nya herself in not letting him do it, for Jay, those no, had suddenly become yes.
no one would stand in his way if it came to saving Nya from anything. He knew very well of her abilities, but he also knew the evil that could be out there, while mother and daughter were captured by the hands of this unexpected event.
They should have come back much, much sooner, but no link came back, the signals had been lost, and he could not wait any longer.
He began to feel an annoying, but also painful, itchy at his palms, feeling his fingers connecting with the battery. The water around him became warmer and warmer, gradually becoming boiling, feeling the heat directly under his skin. But he could not specify whether it was because of the electricity he could no longer stop if he wanted to, or because of the water bubbling up.
The lightning, to be transmitted more fluidly to their magnet, which is the battery, pass through his flesh, boiling the blood in his body, and making him grit his teeth, being the only thing he could do, and that he barely could feel them sore.
He felt himself giving way, as if all his vital energies were hitting with every way, inside the essential electricity for the ship.
But he knew it wasn't the same enough, it still took something more, or the battery would run out again in less than a few minutes, wasting all his effort. Therefore, that necessary limit set by himself, for his own risk and for others, Jay dump it as if it no longer existed. He applied all his strength and potential, putting more force in his arms and feets, feeling them like melting, like a hot glue.
tingling throughout his body, barely feeling an impulsive movement coming from his limbs. A blue-bright light reflected on the protective glasses in his helmet, not recognizing that it was coming out from his, now wide open, eyes, given the overload of his power. He had never gone so far with them, and it was not a feeling to be repeated. Sure, not having to control himself so as not to evaporate someone from the too many watts he let out was quite satisfying, but for the pain, it wasn't worth it.
in the middle consciousness of the moment, now trying to keep attached as much as possible to the battery, he heard very little beats in the door, soundproofed by his helmet, together with the little of the sea inside and the statics that became Jay's fixed thought, starting to believing that he was imagining them.
But his power, although it would probably go on forever, could no longer work, the battery could have gone into overload and stopped working directly, but he mainly, was the one who could not do it anymore. But Jay stayed there, continuing, continuing and continuing, until his body felt like it was burning. Until, not much fortunately, everything came off.
the lightnings stopped from flowing painfully out of his burned hands, the battery was having a chance to burst, but there was a bang anyway, throwing Jay back, slamming his back into the armored door.
The ship had departed. He had succeeded.
"Guys! we're back! " A voice behind the trio called them, making them turn around, and showing out their grieving faces.
their expressions, even if for a few moments, changed anyway because they were grateful that both Nya and Maya were fine, safe and sound, but everything that seemed to be going well, was not, and Nya noticed.
"what's going on here? I saw that you managed to reactivate the battery" she said, then noticing that someone was missing from the list "where's Jay?" a short smile on her face, expecting her boyfriend's cheerful reaction that she was back and alive, slowly fading, realizing something from their sorry faces.
"What does that mean?" her eyebrows twitched on top of her eyes and down, hoping it wasn't what she was thinking. Her mother at her side, wanting maya herself to know that she had misunderstood, but imagining it was not so, comforting her daughter by placing her hand on her shoulder.
But Nya didn't want to come to that conclusion, it wasn't fair and she didn't believe it. It was too early for him to fade.
"Why did you let him go to recharge that damn battery, when I specified to not let him!?" she did not dare to look up from the ground.
"Nya, we were still telling him not to, and also looking for other ways to fix the battery without his powers, but he caught us distracted and.." Lloyd explained, with the nindroids next to him that they could confirm.
"you know how is Jay is, he's stubborn in these type of dangers and no option will ever be better than the one he has in mind!" Nya was furious, but she couldn't tell if she was toward them, or toward Jay himself. She knew that he would continue with his idea, and that somehow he would succeed. And the fact that he always sacrificed himself for her, was a gesture that had no words to describe how beautiful was, but also made her breath rage.
warmth in her cheeks, as her breathing becomes more heavy, feeling her element boiling between her fists. Nya had no idea what she was supposed to do, but she didn't have the courage to open that door.
she waited, imagining the door opening by itself, finding Jay after it and showing his bright smile and shining eyes, remembering that he was not dead, and more alive than ever. until... that imagination had become too realistic.
A sound of metal slamming into the door made her eyes widen, when the door seemed to really open, she couldn't believe her eyes.
a groggry and slightly injured Jay in front of the door, trying to stand, letting himself be held by the door for a single second of rest, taking real air and not through an oxygen tanks.
Despite the fact that his whole body seemed burned from head to toe, seeing the faces of the guys, relieved him a little from the pain, warming him with, the more than happy, compliments from them. When then Jay noticed the two new presences looking back at him, the weight of his whole body seemed to have returned to water again.
he kept his eyes on Nya, while she seemed hesitant about what to do and how to act. Her gaze twitched all over his eyes, but when the real realization hit her full in the stomach, it create an itch of anxiety, mixed with overexcitement on her chest.
Her feet went on by themselves, slowly, and then advanced the steps more and more, coming to wrap his neck in full in her arms and hold him to her as she had never done.
Later she would be furious with Jay, And she also knew that he was aware of it. especially at how he had almost caused her to have half heart attack, but right away, she focused on his labored breathing, how he let her arms hold him to keep his balance, and simply how much she was about to miss their physical contact.
A special physical contact that Nya had not been able to perceive from anyone else but him. To be honest, she had to cut off the warm sea that could come out of her eyes, putting her face between the cavity of his neck and shoulder.
everything had gone good after all, and Jay would still accompany Nya, in his and right way, among her future choices.
