Chapter Text
Grian was bored. He sat on the edge of an island in the downside up, staring off into the void. Exactly a year ago he was taken by the watchers and turned into one of them.
He didn’t mind that much, he got some funky new wings, 2 more pairs than what he had originally had as an avian, and they were purple now. He had also been given magic, but he had pretty much mastered it to be really powerful now and there wasn’t anything much else to do here except watch.
He missed EVO, he missed pulling pranks and building cool structures. He wasn’t exactly lonely, as Pearl and Taurtis were watchers now too, but there was only so many times you spar with Pearl before it got boring.
He remembered an message he had gotten while in EVO, an invite to join another server, Hermitcraft. He had heard of Hermitcraft before, a server of elite redstoners and builders, so he was surprised when he got a message from the server’s admin Xisumavoid asking him if he’d like to join.
A friend of his, known as Mumbo Jumbo, who hadn’t been on EVO had already been there for several seasons now, and they would be starting a new season today.
“What are you thinking about, G?” While Grian was lost in thought he hadn’t noticed Pearl landing behind him. He screamed, startled, nearly falling off the island, fluttering his wings to stand up and face his friend.
“Pearl! You can’t just sneak up on me like that!”
“Sorry, I didn’t realize you’d get so spooked.”
He sighed, brushing off his cloak. “I’ve just been thinking about EVO.”
Pearl frowned at the mention of EVO. “You know we can’t go back, Grian, everyone’s moved on to different servers now, it’s empty.”
“I wanna build, I wanna pull pranks, it’s boring up here!” He kicked a piece of endstone in his anger and watched it roll off the island. “I just wanna be a player again.”
“Do you have anywhere in mind?” Grian summoned his communicator and showed Pearl his invite from Xisuma. “Oh, Hermitcraft. Thats a pretty reputable server, well done, G.”
“They’d be starting season six today.” He sighed and pocketed his communicator. “But it’s not like it matters, it’s not like I can join them now.”
“Why not?” Grian did not like the look on Pearl’s face as she said that, it was the same look he would have when pulling a prank, but he ignored it and answered her question.
“Because I’m here and they’re down there, and now I’m a watcher.”
“That doesn’t mean you can’t join them.”
Grian was about to ask what Pearl meant by that before she flew at him full speed and rammed him off the edge of the island. “PeaRL!!”
“Safe travels, G! Have fun with the Hermits!”
By the time Grian was out of normal sight of the island Pearl realized the one problem with what she had just done. “Now who’s gonna be my sparring buddy?” She thought for a moment before flying back to the watchers castle. “Taurtis! I hope you’ve been practicing!”
———
So there Grian was, falling from the sky, wings cut short by the greed of the watchers-
Wait, his wings were still there. He glanced over his shoulder, but instead of seeing the three pairs of purple-eyed monstrosities of the watchers, he was back to having a singular pair of red, yellow, and blue avian wings.
Maybe he could stop himself from falling.
He flapped them uselessly, doing nothing to slow his descent.
Was this the end? Was this how he would go out after all he’s been through?
Luckily, he landed in the ocean, but there was something different about it.
———
Xisuma counted everyone as they came out of the portal to season 6. The spawn was on a small island off of the main island they planned to settle on. Even through his helmet he could smell the salty sea air of the 1.13 update.
Everyone was there, at least everyone coming from the previous season.
But they were supposed to have a new hermit this season, a small avian builder named Grian, and Xisuma was worried he hadn’t heard from the guy in a while, and hoped he was alright and was find a way to the server on his own.
Xisuma gathered the hermits around spawn and began to explain the rules for the season. “Before you go off into your groups and look for resources, there is one more announcement I would like to make. We were supposed to have a new hermit this season-.” Before he could continue his words were cut off by a loud splash.
Xisuma was surprised to see the aforementioned avian climbing out of the ocean onto the spawn island.
“Since when is there fish?!” Grian exclaimed, clearly out of the loop on this newest update.
Instead of answering his question Xisuma just sighed and introduced the small avian to the hermits, as he had already been doing.
“I’d like to welcome out newest hermit for this season, Grian!!”
