Deku was a living, breathing bundle of fear and excitement. Years had passed since his debut, but despite his experience as a pro-hero, his nervous nature was now ingrained in his innermost being.
It was not her first interview, either as a hero or of this kind. Vanessa knew this well. It was also not the first time that she had covered those freckles with foundation.
However, Deku was not his usual. He was not sunny, awkward and smiling, but surrounded by an almost dull aura. He kept biting his upper lip and looking compulsively left and right, rocking in his chair.
The girl frowned worriedly.
Vanessa had transferred from Otheon five years earlier for work. She was at the top of her class, and she had always been a die-hard hero fan, so when her professor approached her and offered her a job where she would work closely with heroes, she jumped at the chance.
She had a quirk that allowed her to tell the exact color of a person's armor by looking them straight in the eye for exactly five seconds. She would work as an assistant stylist for a well-known hero agency in Japan. Upon her arrival, she was assigned to Deku. Deku was a young hero on the rise.
Kind, radiant, and loved by the public as much as he was criticized for his choice of outfits.
It was a difficult challenge for Vanessa to maintain the boy's style (consisting of stupidly ridiculous t-shirts and hero merchandise-of which Vanessa was quite jealous) without distorting anything and respecting the public image the agency had chosen for Deku.
Deku's popularity grew as time went on, and so did his rank. Within a few years, he had reached ninth place on the JP Hero billboard chart.
During these years, the two warmed up to each other, getting to know each other little by little until they became real friends. Vanessa was aware that she was not Uravity or Ingenium, but she liked to think that she was close enough to the hero to be able to tell when something was wrong.
To have a few minutes alone with the hero, she had sent the make-up artist on a break. That was their routine; Deku would have time to confide in her without being judged.
"What's wrong, Midoriya?" She said, standing directly in front of his face and looking into his eyes.
He didn't answer. The girl slapped his forehead with the back of her rouge brush. The hero flinched in his chair: "Augh, what's wrong with you?" he said. "Why did you hit me?"
"I asked for it first," the woman sighed. She was sitting on the wooden dressing table.
"But didn't I hit you?" Vanessa stared at him for a few moments. Then she saw his confused puppy eyes. She sighed again and crossed her arms.
"I asked you what's wrong, genius," Deku looked at her and smiled weakly. "And stop touching your forehead, I didn't hit you that hard. You are making all the hard work I did go away."
"Sorry."
"Don't be, just tell me what's wrong," Vanessa took his hand and pulled it away from her face to shake it briefly.
"I'm worried," he confided as he slumped into his chair. "About?"
"This interview."
"Why should you be? You're going to do an interview with All Might, and I've seen you two together; I can say that I'm a strong supporter of DadMight." Vanessa laughed, clenching her fist to her chest in solidarity with her fandom.
Midoriya replied with a slightly wider smile.
"But that isn't what's on your mind..." The two looked at each other briefly.
He looked away, down at his hands clasped in his lap, and nodded.
"I'm worried about what people will think when they see us together for the first time. The confrontation will be inevitable." His shoulders stiffened. His eyes glazed over. "Because Izuku and Toshinori are fine, even superfine. I love Toshinori, I really do. I love him and I see in him the father figure that I never had, and he loves me as if I were his son, and I am sure of that," he said.
"But between Deku and All Might?" he asked rhetorically, throwing his head on the back of the chair. "Between Deku and All Might, there is a gulf, and I will never be half the greatness that All Might was.
Vanessa looked at him a little closer with a hesitant look on her face. She had noticed that the dark circles under his eyes were a little deeper these days, and that the wrinkles at the corners of his eyes were a little more pronounced as well.
"When I talk about it with others... " he sighed, "Uraraka, Iida or Todoroki, they tell me that I'm stupid to think of such things and that I'm too caught up in my fanboy mentality to notice that I'm a good hero, too. That's not what I meant! I know I am a good hero. I don't want to be arrogant, but God, I've worked so hard to be here and I'm aware that I'm giving it my all, my plus ultra. And I give it every day and I have

"All Might has simply been a better hero than I am or will ever be. I'm 23 years old, and while he's saved so many people and fought so many bad guys at my age, I spent more than a year as Hawk's sidekick. I didn't become independent until I was 21, and I have constant problems with the HPSC," he continued, emphatically counting all his failures on his fingers as a few tears rolled down his cheeks.
"I couldn't save those civilians on the beach in Shichirigahama last summer, that little girl during the attack in Osaka, the two elderly couples during the attack on the nursing home in Nara, and do you remember that family during the earthquake in Tokyo last month? I took them straight to the emergency room, but the mother didn't make it. Now those two children are orphans. And there are so many other famil-"
Two arms wrapped around him in a warm embrace, stopping his panting. "I'm torn between hitting you or hugging you." Vanessa threw herself on top of the hero with all of her body.
"I'm stopping you right here, right now, because I am aware that if I were to ask you the names of these people, you would have no hesitation in answering me," he continued, not breaking the embrace.
"And I'm not saying it's wrong, maybe a little bit, but listen carefully, okay?" Midoriya returned the embrace, diving into the woman's curly hair. Silently, he nodded and wiped away his tears. He hated crying, hated that his emotions made tears run down his face. Crying made him look stupid. Damn, he was a hero.
"I remember all the accidents, all your fights, and I remember all the times you failed to save someone. I can tell. Always. Because I have to cover your dark circles with a little more concealer, I have to pay attention to your eyes because they are always too dry and red, and I don't want you to turn into a panda because you don't pay attention and forget that you had mascara on," Midoriya smiled and pulled up his nose.
Vanessa hugged him a little bit tighter and whispered the next few words to him.
"You're Deku, you're one of the youngest heroes to defeat an SSS-level villain at age 16, but you wanted to start small, as Hawk's sidekick, because you didn't feel ready to open an agency and you still wanted to learn. It took you longer to become independent because not everyone had the same sensibility as you and there were many agencies that failed within two months of opening. They had to make sure that your agency didn't end up the same way - as if it was even possible to think of such a thing." The last sentence was said with a certain disdain. Her eyes were turned to the sky.
"You have constant conflicts with the HPSC because you have two completely different ways of seeing things and people, so they are constantly trying to mess up your plans."
"Shichirigahama, I will always remember it as one of the most heartbreaking incidents of your career because I didn't know if you would come out alive. It was seven minutes underwater. You held out against Omniaque for seven minutes so that all the civilians could leave the beach and get to safety. Although you are not a hero with an aquatic quirk, you saved more than two hundred people."
"The attacks in Osaka and Nara were unpredictable, real accidents. The little girl and the elderly couples died instantly before the heroes even noticed the presence of a villain. In the Osaka attack, you were carrying an entire building on your shoulders. You didn't even have your own equipment. You were wearing that stupid T-shirt that said "pants" that I tried so hard to throw away. Damn, it didn't even rip." She laughed, clearing the emotion from her throat, "While you were breaking your bones, they managed to get seven thousand people to safety and evacuate," she went on, "seven thousand people, most of them unharmed."
"And in Tokyo, the whole family was alive and breathing when you rushed them to the hospital. The mother had a complication during surgery. The kids were scared, but physically, they were fine."
Vanessa pulled away from Midoriya's arms, "I remember all your battles," she took his face and gently brought it to hers to look into his eyes.
"You are an outstanding hero, Izuku" A serious expression made the moment a little more serious. "The only difference between you and All Might is that he was the first. He dreamed of being someone the world had never seen. A symbol, a pillar. An Atlas carrying the weight of the world on his shoulders, alone," the woman dabbed at a stray tear with her thumb and smiled softly. Then, she shifted her gaze to a few strands of hair.
"But you're not him, you know, you have other heroes with you, just as good and just as competent, who risked their lives for civilians and who were inspired by All Might just like you," she reassured him. "You're doing just as good as All Might did in his time. The only difference is that All Might never had anyone to compare himself to. You did," Vanessa shrugged in a gesture that trivialized her thoughts.
"Deku is more than a hero, Deku is hope, he is certainly a symbol, a pillar and a guide, but he is simply so in a different way than All Might. You are here and your mere presence will draw others back because your presence invites people to fight, not to give up and to hope that everything will turn out for the best." Izuku looked at Vanessa in amazement, her eyes shining with sweetness and admiration. "Deku saves, but he helps to save oneself, to fight for oneself, because Deku is not unreachable, not like All Might was."
"Deku is emotion. You feel it, it is a warm feeling at the top of your heart. It is the will to live, it is the belief in the other, in second chances, in the impossible. You feel it, it is a blind faith, in you, but also in ourselves". The girl looked back at the hero. He had an indecipherable expression on his face.
She cleared her throat, breaking the moment and realizing the words she had spoken. Rising sharply from the hero's legs, she said, followed by a light laugh, "Just trust me, okay? I'm as much a hero nerd as you are, you know that. I've done my analysis."
After a few moments of embarrassment, Vanessa turned away to approach the dressing room door.
"I'll call Sato-kun to finish the make-up."
As if coming out of a sudden stupor, Midoriya grabbed her arm and stopped her. "I really don't know what to say," he babbled, "I guess I should thank you."
"No need, you are my favorite hero. Maybe it's because I don't tell you enough that you're having these doubts."
Vanessa smiled and gently tapped his forehead with her fingers. Midoriya would have liked to tell her that this was the first time she had ever heard her say something like that, but he refrained, noticing the blush on her cheeks.
"Do you really think so?" he asked instead, in a quiet, almost shy tone, "Am I as you described?"
The stylist's gaze softened, "Of course, Izuku. You are an extraordinary hero and person, never doubt yourself even if others do it for you."
"Now, you're late, start getting dressed, like really fast, like your and my life depends on it, because they are."

All Might pauses on the next words, as if the memory gave him chills: "It was really uncomfortable at first, but then I got used to it. Wasn't that amazing to be free?" Deku next to him resists only for a second, then collapses and laughs. After a few seconds, breathing almost with difficulty, he reaches for air with his hand. All Might shifts his gaze slightly embarrassed between Deku and the unframed interviewer. However, he has a small smile on his face. "I think there is an explicit picture of me fixing myself somewhere on the internet."
A voice interrupts him, "We found it just to show you today."
All Might looks around in alarm, his eyes scanning the room. He fidgets in his chair. "No, we don't have it, just kidding," the voice says. All Might falls back in his chair, relieved.
Deku keeps laughing, and even starts coughing for air. Then he stands up and walks away. All Might looks at him smiling: "He's laughing so hard just because he saw that picture," he says grumpily: "Can he have some water? When he's in that mood, it's hard to even talk to him, we have time, right?" A voice reassures him with a laugh, "All the time we need"].

The long-awaited interview with hero Deku and retired hero All Might. Uncomfortable questions, hot truths, and who knows is there an air of secrecy? 😱😱🤯
[The video begins with a frontal shot of Deku and All Might sitting in chairs. They appear to be talking to each other. Some technicians are setting up microphones and adjusting the lights. It is obvious that the heroes think that they are not being filmed. "Did you eat today, Izuku?" asks All Might, looking sideways at the makeup artist. "Yes, I ate," replies the other, slumping into his chair. The sound engineer adjusts the microphone behind his back. "Your mother called earlier, why don't you ever answer her? You always worry your mother."
"I didn't hear the phone, I'll do it later, don't worry," Deku rolls his eyes. "Izuku" All Might's tone becomes stern. "What?"
"Did you roll your eyes?"
"No?" Deku looks at All Might with a weak, fake smile. "Izuku," the former hero picks him up. "AAA I said, don't worry."
"Izuku," the tone of his voice became more firm. "ARHH," the young hero sighed deeply.
Direct cut. A new recording begins. Deku can be seen in the distance talking on his phone. Maybe with his mother. All Might sighs and sinks back into his chair, "Ah, back in my day....
Another cut.
The HeroHome theme song begins. Another frontal shot of the heroes. "Hello everyone, I am Hero Deku," the young man begins, raising his hand. "And I am All Might," the other one smiles. "We are here today to answer some of your questions. We look forward to it!" explodes Deku. All Might looks at him and nods into the camera. "I haven't done this in so long."]

I can't do anything, I can't look at her, I had promised All Might, so I grab the keys and leave the car. It was weird and I was scared, so I started to run, but a few meters ahead I met All Might. He was laughing. I wanted to kill him or myself. I still didn't know what to do. I was just glad it was fake].

[Deku pulls a note out of the tin can. He reads it, "Are you the illegitimate son of All Might's secret love?" Deku laughs heartily. He folds the note in half and looks out of the frame, "Was Shoto here?" All Might laughs. "No, I am not All Might's biological son, but I have long considered him my father." Deku looks at the former hero, walks over with his chair and rests his head on his shoulder. All Might smiles and kisses his head, stroking Deku's curls. A faint "I love you" is heard in response.
