Work Text:

The Pigeon sat down on a siding by himself, he couldn't let go of the fact that he wasn't able to drive the bus or get permission for it (he didn't want to get into trouble). He was angry at the world for saying “No!” to him after asking for the opportunity to drive the bus, and even thought he never got the chance to do anything. As The Pigeon was processing his thoughts, a certain someone walked up to him. “Hey, Mr. Pigeon.” He called. The Pigeon looked up to looked up to see who it was. It was The Bus Driver, who look concerned. Remembering how The Bus Driver didn't want him to drive the bus, the Pigeon looked away from him. “Go away!” He growled. The Bus Driver didn't go away, “Look, I understand you're upset about the fact you never got the chance to drive the bus, or have permission for it.” “Yeah, so?!” The Pigeon added. “But, do you know why I can't let you drive the bus?” The Bus Driver asked. “No!” The Pigeon yelled, “No one told me any reason WHY I shouldn't drive the bus! All they said was, 'No!', 'NO!' and 'NOO!'. Tell me, WHY can't I drive the bus? WHY shouldn't I drive the bus? TELL ME, WHY?!”

The Pigeon then looked down at the ground, with a tear of disappointment in his eye. “Mr. Pigeon, the reason I didn't let you drive the bus is because you're just not ready for it. There's a lot of responsibilities and tasks that come with driving the bus, like dealing with traffic, passengers, and even breakdowns. It can be fun at first, but it will become very stressful. Even I get stressed when driving the bus sometimes.” The Bus Driver explained, “But I should've told you sooner. I didn't mean for you to get upset.” The Pigeon thought about it for a moment and it started to make sense to him. Driving the Bus looked easy at first, but after learning from what The Bus Driver had said, it was anything but. “You know...” The Pigeon responded, “Maybe you're right. I shouldn't drive the bus, at least not yet.” The Bus Driver smiled, “That's good to hear. Maybe one of the days, I'll take you to work and show you what driving the bus is all about! You might learn something new!” The Pigeon nodded, “Yeah! Let's do it now!” The Bus Driver laughed, “Maybe not now! I can't drive the bus when not at work!” The Pigeon was shocked by hearing that, “Wait! You also get told 'No!' when asked to drive the bus?” “Yeah.” The Bus Driver confirmed, “I also get told that, everyone does.” The Pigeon had to take in about what he had heard, “My... I don't believe it...” “I know, but you'll believe it eventually!” The Bus Driver joked, “Anyway! I'm going home now, I might see you tomorrow! Oh, almost forgot! Before I go, I must tell you this: Don't try and drive the bus!”

As The Bus Driver headed home, The Pigeon reflected about all of this. When he was told not to drive the bus, The Pigeon would previously go crazy about it. But now, he understood why, and even thought that being told “No!” was completely justified. Well, almost. “At least they could've told me why...” The Pigeon thought to himself, before heading his own way home.
