Work Text:
Scott was never one to follow rules the way you were supposed to follow them. He always pushed them to their limits. Those of his parents and his teachers. Actions have consequences but there were never any for him. It would have been better if there were because you learn something in one of two ways. You learn something from a young age because someone explained it to you, or you were punished. The other way to learn is the hard way. You challenge the wrong person to a fight and get beaten black and blue. But he never really broke the rules, he just pushed them to their limit. His teachers would always tell him that at some point there would be consequences. He never believed them. He was smart, he knew how to get away with things. Adults would often say that he would not survive in the cruel reality.
They were wrong. Over a thousand of years later he was doing really well. You couldn’t say that for any of them though. He was the only immortal amongst them. The only other immortal he knew from that time is his older brother Xornoth. And since there were never any consequences for planning the way he wanted, he just continued.
You’d think that if some of the most dangerous creatures in the universe trapped you and your friends in a death game, you would know to play after their rules. Build alliances, build traps, and kill if your red. Only that Scott got married instead. Who in their right mind would get married in a death game. Scott. Scott would and did. But that game was more of an experiment for the players. They didn’t know what to do and what the best way to play was. In the next game he would play like the watchers want them to, right?
Its Scott. Of course he wouldn’t. One of the first things he did was build a cottage. To be fair, a base is needed and they moved underground at some point. When he got the boogeyman curse for the first time, he went a tactical way. He didn’t just attack a group of people. He waited until he found someone who was alone. While Impulse escaped him at first with his enchanted golden apple, Scott found him and pushed Impulse down a hole he himself build. Later in the season he got boogeyman again. Since he was on yellow and would likely die anyways, he decided not to boogey kill. They were not happy about that. With the boogeyman curses comes a lot of bloodlust. He should not have had a choice. And to the absolute mockery of the watchers, Scott won that game. They knew he remembers past seasons. As a punishment, they Soulbound him to Pearl in double life. Having to be with someone you were once close with, but they don’t remember any of it is basically torture. But since Pearl went to the Nether at the start with Martyn, Scott and Cleo decided to be soulmates instead. And with how fate wanted it, Pearl and Scott were the last people alive. The watchers wanted the last Soulbounds alive to fight till they both die. But Scott didn’t plan on winning again. In his mind, Pearl deserved it more and he already won once. So, he lit TNT on himself and blew himself up, killing Pearl and crowning her the winner.
What he did was technically not against the rules, but he didn’t play the way the Watchers wanted him to. And they were angry.
The fourth game started and the boogeycurse came back. Scott was the first. He refused to kill last time and now they wanted to force him this way, knowing that he would not risk loosing so much time immediately. But did they really think he would do it the way they wanted him to do it? They should know him by this point. He got his boogey kill in only a few minutes, removing anyone’s fear and mistrust created by the knowledge of the boogeyman that could kill them anytime. So, the Watchers were rerolled boogey and made sure that Scott didn’t get it again. They hated him. If they made him boogey again, they would basically just give him more time. They didn’t want him to win again. But they were glad about Scott having extra time. He wasn’t going to die. He always avoided death. But the extra time would put a target on his back when everyone started turning yellow.
They were right. Scott got hunted down by the yellows. Yet he still managed to get killed by his allies, Cleo and Martyn. Scott wanted it that way. He offered Cleo to kill him for the time and told Martyn to kill him when everyone was chasing him. He was down to yellow and the game continued.
It happened again. He was one of the last yellow and got hunted down by the reds. He gave time to Cleo, Jimmy and Scar. This time he actually started killing a lot when he got to red. He had so much time. To much time. He couldn’t win again. His last win was already a mockery. The Watchers just can’t allow that. Everyone has died bar three. Martyn, Impulse and Scott. They stand close together. Everyone against everyone. Like the ending of last life. Scott would probably win this fight too. He can’t win again. The whisper in his ear. They tell him to take the time. They tell him to betray them. They can see that it’s working. He is listening. He is a listener. The bloodlust becomes stronger. They feed it. He is going mad. He needs the time. They feed his hunger for time. He attacks. He kills Scott first. A betrayal is sure to hurt. He kills Impulse next. He is the new winner. The listener won and the one defying the rules got betrayed.
“My own mean gill, and I wouldn’t have had it any other way.”
A betrayal is sure to hurt. But of course, not for him. He is glad. He got what he wanted. He wanted that betrayal. He wanted his ally to win. He didn’t want to win. He wanted that betrayal and they gave it to him. They hate him. They want him to suffer. They killed Jimmy first every time to try and hurt Scott. It worked in 3rd but then never again. They tried to force him to team up with pearl, who he shared so many memories with while she couldn’t remember. But he just refused to team with her.
That is another thing he always has done and will always do. He refused. He refused to die. He refused to follow rules. He refused to let anyone control him.
People say that wisdom comes with age. He profs them right. He is far older than anyone could imagine. Far older than most gods. Far older than the Watchers. He is smarter than the Watchers.
They say you learn with time, yet it’s been over a thousand years, and he still defies and breaks rules without any consequences. I mean… what consequences could be there for an immortal.
