Long walks

Summary:

Reagan accompanies Brett on a jog in the park.

She's doing her best.

Work Text:

"Come on Reagan, you can do it!" cheered Brett as he stopped jogging to stay and wait for Reagan who was already falling behind.

"W-water... Give me water," the brunette was begging in between exhaustion and sighing breaths. She was regretting going for a jog with Brett at that moment but thought maybe it would be a good idea to get out of her office and lab routine. The fresh air wasn't bad but it was getting too sunny. If she hadn't applied sunscreen before she went out she would have been pinking up by now. Besides, she never thought she'd wear that sporty outfit that was on discount that Brett had suggested she buy just in case.

"Look, even Laika enjoys this walk," Brett mentioned, pointing to the dog that was accompanying them, wagging her tail.

"Just give me the water bottle," she asked again regaining her composure.

"Oh right, here," he held out the bottle.

She took it and quickly opened it and took a big gulp. The liquid cooled her throat and she could feel hydrated at last.

"How many miles do you think we ran?" asked Brett, he already knew how many thanks to his watch but wanted to know if Reagan maybe had an estimate.

"I don't know, maybe five?" she replied wiping the remnants of water that had dripped down her chin with her wrist and closing the bottle.

"No. My apple watch counts almost an mile, " he said pointing to his wrist and showing Reagan the number so she could see for herself.

"Still feels like five or more," Reagan commented.

Brett pulled a small towel out of one of his pockets and reached over to wipe the sweat from her forehead. "It's because you're not used to it, but I'm so glad you were encouraged to join me today."

Reagan smiled slightly.

"I think Laika is thirsty," she commented seeing the dog as tired as she was.

Brett pulled out the portable water bottle and bent down for the dog to drink. "Do you mind if we run a few more yards or take a break?"

Reagan thought about his question. She didn't know if they had been enough for Brett but someone like her wouldn't be able to keep up with him, still, he was understandable and would hold back to run alongside her but sometimes Brett would get excited and leave her behind.

"Only if you want to. I think it would be better to take a break, though," she suggested.

"You're right. It would be nice to rest for a while," he was sweaty and longing for a bath at the moment, considering going to the pool on one of those days when they had another day off. He was thinking of other plans to share with Reagan until he heard the sound of a familiar bell. It was the ice cream cart.

"Do you want ice cream?" he asked excitedly.

"Please," she replied.

"Wait for me on this bench. What flavor do you want?"

"Cookies and cream sounds good to me," Reagan said.

"Perfect! I won't be long," and he trotted away from her to the sidewalk. The park was his favorite place to jog.

Reagan slumped down on the nearest bench and sighed. With all that exercise she was going to sleep through the night due to exhaustion. She stroked Laika's head and waited for about 5 minutes. Soon she saw Brett approaching her with two ice creams in his hands.

Brett passes her the one with the flavor she chose and when she tastes it she feels like in heaven, perfect for that hot day. Soon she feels Brett sit down next to her with his strawberry ice cream.

"We should do this again," Brett suggested as he licks his ice cream.

"Let me think about it, Brett, but I'll consider it," the brunette told him. She was always trying new things with him, she wasn't complaining.

They finished their ice cream and continued walking along the park, contemplating the autumn colors and the wind blowing softly in their ears regaining energy to go home.
