The Void Blinks Back

Summary:

Tim gets stuck in shift often so he has plans for all kinds of situations. Jason really wants to know why the Drakes left a kitten all alone and where his replacement is.

YOTP 2023 September,
Prompts: Hurt/Comfort, Shifter AU,

Notes:

The dynamics between Tim and Jason's shifter forms are vaguely inspired by the comic 'Pixie & Brutus'. Tim is also based of my sibling's cat who would 'murder' anything for fun. Very sweet, but vicious.

Chapter Text

Tim often got stuck in his shift, so the fact that he currently weighed 3 pounds, looked as if void was sentient, liquid, and wanted to kill you, was not surprising. In fact, because of how often he got stuck in his shift, Tim had developed… Plans for certain possible scenarios.

His parents suddenly came home? Hide in one of the never used guest rooms and wait for them to leave so he doesn't get put in The Cage.

He needed to save Batman from a rogue or his own stupidity? Well, it sucked that they would then know what his shift was, but Tim had been training to fight in his shift. He was a very effective fighter despite his small stature.

Stuck outside the house? There is a small window that Tim has made certain he can open in shift and can’t be locked.

Or, like the current situation, an intruder gets into the manor?

Become the darkness.

Strike fear into the hearts of his enemies.

Consume theIR SOULS!

Months of planning, weeks of recon, and days of research, that’s how long it took Jason to finally be able to break into Drake Manor and have fun with the new Robin. Training with the league had taught him many skills, including that things hurt worse when you thought you were safe.

However, none of his training was used as he crept into the empty manor. Despite being in Gotham, the house didn’t even have an alarm system. Rich pricks.

Jason searched the house carefully, looking for any sign of his replacement. His footsteps were louder than expected in the dark halls. Jason paused a moment before shifting. Sensitive paw pads hit the polished wood floors, and Jason shook his mottled red, brown, and white coat out.

Not nearly as cool as a wolf, but an Alaskan malamute was nothing to sneeze at. It had certainly saved his life during the winter on the streets.

Now armed with a better nose and the element of surprise, Jason continued his hunt into a sitting room. He nosed the door open and surveyed the room before walking farther in.

Tim drew up where he sat on the shelf, preparing himself for the battle ahead.

His victim was almost in place.

Soon… The mortal’s soUL WOULD BE HIS!

Something yowled and landed on Jason’s back. He turned.

And turned.

And kept turning in a circle trying to see what was on his back.

A small black splotch of fuzz had attached itself to Jason’s rump. This was unprecedented as he knew that the Drakes did not own a cat. He flopped against the floor to try and remove the small kitten but it just launched itself at Jason’s head. Rearing back, Jason tried to bat at the kitten to protect his eyes from the small claws. No matter how far he retreated, the cat chased him. Vying for his blood.

However, the tiny murderous kitten’s plans were disrupted by Jason’s thick fur. The small claws could not get through it. He sat there for a moment, cat on his head, contemplating if he could just wait until the thing ran out of energy.

Just as Jason layed down to wait, the small kitten released its grip on his head. Jason waited to see what it would do next.

He regretted that decision the moment a foul smelling liquid soaked into his fur.

The- It PISSED ON HIM!

Jason shook his head, throwing the cat off, and whined. Satan incarnate simply cleaned its paw and made to saunter out of the room.

Tim normally wouldn’t, but the act of claiming the dog shifter added insult to injury and ensured that they would be less likely to continue trying to steal.

Now, time for food. Tim deserved it before he continued writing his history paper.

Jason stayed there for a moment, covered in urine.

Finally, he shifted back into human form, cringing at the feeling of the cat pee running down the back of his head. Slowly, he made his way to one of many bathrooms to shower. Vigilante persona be damned, cat piss stank.

Now smelling like stale lavender shampoo and wearing dusty clothing from Jack Drake’s closet, Jason slowly searched out the small kitten. His revenge plans for Robin forgotten in favor of finding out why the Drakes - who hadn't been in Gotham for three months - left a small kitten alone in their house.

Jason hated many things, child abusers, rapists, and important to current events, animal abusers.

Tim yawned, he was finally done with his history paper. Hard work in cat form. His history paper covered the history of shifters and the prejudices that they have faced through time. Tim included genetics and ways for society to better itself about how shifters are treated. He was proud of himself.

Now, Tim had a different problem to solve. He had finished his schoolwork, and had no cases to work on. What was he going to do for the next nineteen hours until his shift form used up his excess mana and he was able to shift back to human form? He had to stay awake so his mana couldn’t replenish, but he was bored.

A hand grabbed him and suddenly Tim was being held.

Oh, that robber from earlier hadn't left yet.

Oops.

I do have more written, but I need to write more for another chapter. So more will be coming! No idea how much more though...
