I Don't Want To Be P17

Summary:

Lance is struggling with his anger after he qualifies P17 in Qatar and it doesn't help when Fernando manages to get onto the second row of the grid.

Notes:

Hello all! Here is a Lance/Fernando story featuring Mick and George. This is based on qualifying from Qatar and the moment that Lance pushes his performance coach is mentioned too. In this story, Lance qualifies P17 in Qatar and is annoyed when Fernando manages to get P4 and the two of them have a moment in the paddock. Mick and George witness the argument and talk to Fernando after Lance storms off. I know I've written a few stories based on Qatar 2023 but I can't help it.

Work Text:

Lance was absolutely furious when he returned to the garage having qualified P17 for Sunday's race. It didn't matter that he would be able to qualify in the sprint race and potentially get points during the sprint race. He was annoyed with the result. Once he was back in the garage, he flew his steering wheel out of the car. He did care where it landed. After he jumped out of the car, his coach appeared in front of him. The Canadian didn't want to speak to anyone so he shoved him in the chest and stormed off. He was glad that no one followed him.

Eventually, the Canadian went to the media pen with his press officer after he had finally left his driver's room. He had tried to lock himself in his room before he gave in and reluctantly headed to the media pen. He knew that he would end up being dragged there by his dad anyway.

Lance made it clear to the journalists in the media pen that he wasn't happy and he didn't want to be there. He didn't really care if he got a telling off from his press officer later. He just didn't care.

The Canadian returned to the motorhome and kept an eye on Fernando's qualifying session. He wasn't entirely happy that the Spaniard had managed to qualify P4 when he was stuck in 17th place.

Lance left the motorhome whilst Fernando was in the media pen. The Canadian didn't really want to be around the team since Fernando had gotten such a good result. He hadn't meant to be spotted by Fernando as he was pacing around the paddock.

“Lance!”

Fernando barely paid any attention to the fact that Lance was glaring at him.

“Hey, what are you doing here?” Asked Fernando.

“I didn't want to be in the motorhome, not after qualifying.”

Fernando sighed.

“I heard what happened with Henry.”

Lance snorted.

“The whole paddock knows what happened with Henry.”

“That wasn't fair on him, Lance.”

“Are you saying I deserved a bad result?”

“No, I never said anything like that.”

“You're thinking it and everyone else is.”

“Lance, I'm sorry about your qualifying session but it's not right to have a go at other people and go pushing folk around because you aren't happy.”

“I've not had a go at anyone.”

“It's happened in the past.”

Lance scoffed.

“You know what, I don't need to listen to this. I'll see you in debrief, Fernando.”

Before the Spaniard could argue, Lance stormed off. Fernando sighed.

“Fernando, are you okay?”

The Spaniard turned and he realised that he had an audience of Mick and George looking back at him with concern.

“How much of that did you see?” Asked Fernando.

“All of it.” Replied George.

Mick nodded and Fernando ran a hand over his face.

“Are you okay, Fernando?” Asked Mick.

“I will be.”

“He has to be careful, Fernando, he shouldn't be treating his coach like that.” Said George.

“I know but he's angry about his qualifying session and I know that he probably isn't happy that I managed to qualify P4 and he can't get out of Q1.” Said Fernando.

“That's not your fault.” Said Mick.

“I know but we've argued about it before.”

“Aleix told me that he was quite snarky in the media pen.” Said George.

Fernando sighed.

“So I heard.”

The Spaniard turned and looked in the direction that Lance had disappeared in not too long ago.

“I need to go, I'll see you guys later.”

Both Mick and George watched on as Fernando headed to his motorhome. Mick glanced up at George.

“Do you think they'll be alright?” Asked Mick.

“I hope so, Mick, I really hope so.”
