Tim is just about to go see where Lucy is so they can make their dinner reservation when he sees her talking to Nyla. They are sitting at Nyla’s next turned away from him. He tilts his head and walks closer but stops short again when he hears Lucy’s voice.
“I’m thinking of walking away.” She says her voice a little shaky. “I don’t want this to ruin the best thing to ever happen to me.”
Tim’s heart drops as he listens to Nyla reply. “It’s hard Lucy. I know to give up something you love.”
“Yeah.” Lucy replies. “I just—”
Tim turns around and walks back to his office a million thought going through his mind. Walking away, giving up something you love.
Lucy wasn’t thinking of walking away from him was she. They were in a beautiful place, they had moved in with each other, they were in love. She had just made detective and they were happy.
But she was also pursuing undercover work and as hard as that was for him he was proud of her. She loved it and it made her happy, maybe he thought with a start. She loved it more than she loved him.
Maybe she thought if she continued it he would leave her but that thought never crossed his mind. Not even once, Lucy was different than Isabel. She always had been and he trusted her fully and completely to pull out of an operation if he ever sounded the alarm.
But maybe she was having second thoughts. Maybe she thought she was letting him down, holding him back.
There’s a knock on the door and it opens revealing Lucy in her date night clothes. She smiles at him, the necklace he had given her shining on her neck.
“Hi baby.” She says softly stepping into the office. “Are you ready to go?” Tim nods but avoids her eyes as he stands up.
“Yeah. Just give me a minute.” He tells her. She nods and he smiles at her as he walks past her squeezing her arm.
He goes to change his mind still whirling with Lucy and Nyla’s conversation. He wasn’t going to let this ruin their evening. He couldn’t let it.

Tim is quiet at dinner and shies away from her touch. He knows it’s only a matter of time before she asks what’s wrong. He watches her eat the bread in front of her and she’s beautiful. She always is. But underneath the lowlight of the restaurants lights she’s glowing.
He thinks of the ring in his sock drawer, he wants her forever. But maybe she doesn’t…
“Tim.” Lucy’s quiet voice interrupts his thoughts and he turns to her and sees that her face is full of concern.
“Yeah?”
“What’s wrong?” She asks reaching out to touch his hand. He doesn’t yank away, her touch grounds him. “You have been quiet all night.” Tim blinks wondering if he should even bring it up, if he should put a damper on their night. But he just has to know if he’s about to lose the one person who loves him unconditionally. The woman who understands him and can calm him down with a touch.
“Are you going to leave me?” He blurts out and she reels back a little bit staring at him as if she’s waiting for him to continue. Tim doesn’t speak though he just holds her gaze, determined to figure this out.
“What are you talking about?” Lucy finally says and she laces her fingers through his so he doesn’t pull away. “Why would would I leave you?”
Tim looks at her and then the ceiling. “I heard you talking to Nyla. You said you were going to walk away and—”
Lucy makes a soft sound and scoots closer to him. She puts her other hand on his leg and n brings the one that is laced with hers up to her mouth and kisses it gently before lowering it back to the table, her feels her finger doing small circles on his palm.
“From UC work.” She says. “I’m thinking of walking away from UC work Tim. I was getting Nyla’s advice on it.”
Tim stared at her a little shocked. But she loved UC work, how could she just give it up?
“But you love UC work.” He says quietly. Lucy nods and lets go of his hand to cup his face.
“I do. But the thing is, there’s something that is far more important. There is someone that matters more than that. Someone I love more than a job.”
Tim doesn’t say anything so Lucy continues. “You matter more Tim. Our relationship matters more. And yes I love UC work but I love you more and if I lost you…”
“I wouldn’t just walk away either Luce.” Tim says quietly. “I can’t lose you either. But I don’t want to be the reason you stop..”
“Tim.” Lucy says firmly. “I want a family, and a marriage. I want all of that with you, and I’m not giving it up because of you babe. My heart just isn’t in it anymore, every time I have to leave you. Every time I have to leave everything I know and I love. It’s hard, changing from one person to another. Its terrifying worrying someone will recognize me. I know I can be a detective and do other stuff to make the world a better and safer place.”
“I know.” Says Tim and he reaches out to pull her closer. It’s the first time all night he has made the gesture to touch her. “This is what you want? You won’t regret it?”
Lucy shakes her head. “You make me far happier than UC work. I love you Tim and I want a life with you. I can be a detective and come home to you. I just don’t want to do something that doesn’t make me feel happy anymore.”
Tim leans forward to kiss her, it’s soft and gentle but he thinks she gets the point. “I love you so much Lucy.”
Lucy smiles into the kiss running her fingers and playing with the hair on the back of his hair. “I love you too. I’m sorry you misunderstood what we were talking about. I was planning on talking to you soon.”
Tim smiles and pulls her close. “It’s okay. I shouldn’t have been listening but—” He trails off. He knows she gets it.
“So are you ready to have a great date night?” She asks him. He laughs and places a kiss on top of her head.
“Always.” He says and she snuggles closer to him. They probably will need to talk more but for right now this is all he needs.
