It’s been a few years since she’d last seen her, but the blonde currently yelling at Guren was just as feisty as before. Not that Shinoa could blame her, being assigned to a newbie squad was basically a demotion. Especially the squad led by the disgraced Hiiragi. Not a great career move.
She smiled to herself, taking in each new squadmate in turn. Yoichi was his bubbly self, greeting Yuu enthusiastically. Kimizuki and Yuichiro traded caustic greetings as was expected. They’re great friends.
The sound of her name caught her attention, insults flying off Mitsuba’s tongue with ease.
Yuu turned to her with a frown, unimpressed.
“There you are, Shinoa Hiiragi!” Mitsuba shouted.
She smiled and agreed, waving to the other girl. This was, indeed, where she was.
“Don’t antagonize her, Shinoa. She’s part of your team now.” Guren admonished. He was quick to catch on, as always. The man had a sense of humor the size of an ant.
“Nothing to worry about, Lt. Colonel! Ignoring talentless losers is the mature thing to do,” she reassured him with a smile. It was hard not to laugh at the look on his face.
“I'll crush you!” The blonde screamed.
A rush of demonic energy filled the air and then Shinoa really did laugh. Scythe summoned in her hand, she swung up, catching the enormous axe against the blade.
The girls locked eyes and Shinoa lost herself in the violet. Her heart started racing. Oh. That was all she could think, because the blush covering Mitsuba’s face and the fury in her eyes was the most beautiful thing she’d ever seen.
Suddenly she understood what was wrong with her, why she had never fallen in love like her sister always insisted that she would. Why she hadn’t developed any of those schoolyard crushes like her classmates before the apocalypse. Shinoa Hiiragi, ultimate disgrace to her family, was a lesbian.
A clang of metal and her scythe was wrenched from her grasp. She gasped, fingers smarting, gaze ripped from Mistuba’s as she shifted to glare at Guren. He ignored her of course, stepping forward to grab both girls by the throat. Yelling about insubordination and, as always, (he was really developing a complex) how he was their superior officer and will punish them, yada-yada.
Mitsuba apologized immediately like the good little girl she had always been.
Shinoa just smirked and said, “oh dear.”

It’s hard to bottle up emotions once you realize you have them, but Shinoa does her best. It’s easy to pretend to be the facetious thing she’s always been. She clings to Mitsuba, her warm embraces and sexual jests to make when she can hide behind her sly smile.
When Mitsuba blushes and stutters at Yuu is when things get a bit hard. That’s the same blush Shinoa is rewarded with when she teases the blonde.
Ah, young love!
It’s always been Shinoa who loses in the face of it. Her sister and now her first crush. She’d hate it if she could, spit and scream and wail at the unfairness. But in the end, everyone always leaves her and it’s exhausting to feel such things. To feel at all.
Gradually it becomes easy.
Mitsuba and Yuu are her friends.
Her teasing is just between female friends, her heart is closed off because her love loves another. She wants to see them both happy, and if that’s with each other all the better. Less moving parts to keep track of. Yuu hung the moon in Mitsuba’s sky and if Yuu seemed oblivious it was no matter. Boys were dense on matters of the heart, take Yoichi and Kimizuki for example, both circling each other without realizing it themselves. Yuu was just exceptionally dense. He’d notice eventually if those quick glances he shoots toward the blonde’s chest were any indication.
They settle in a routine, a squad in truth if an inexperienced one. Soon enough they are pulled off the field and added to the protection detail of Shinjuku. Intel says there are plans for a vampire attack and this is her squad's first real assignment.
Things go well enough, until the appearance of several noble vampires. The Moon Demon Company was screwed, Yuu was forced from the battle by a vampire that had apparently previously been a member of Yuu’s family, and suddenly everyone has fangs in their neck.
After that things got a little weird, even for a Hiiragi.
Yuu’s transformation into a seraphic nightmare is a mild surprise, she knew that the ones Guren hand selected had the genetics for it, but she’d missed the detail that they were actually part of the experiment.
She knows so little about the horrors that Guren and her sister were dabbling into.
To have one facing her down with murderous intent while wearing the face of a friend is a new experience.
Fear begins to unfurl in her gut, an icy prickle in her veins as her heart picks up slightly.
That’s when another crazy thing happens.
The vampire, Yuu’s family? He throws himself onto Yuu’s sword, taking the hit for her.
Shinoa stares up at the blond, eyes impossibly wide.
And then, suddenly it’s not easy anymore.
A tall, slender figure stands before her, arms spread wide. A sword pierced through him, staining the back of his shirt crimson. Those gorgeous blond locks are pristine, pure in this world of blood and Shinoa finds herself falling all over again.
She’s not a lesbian, she’s just really into blondes who like Yuu-chan and possibly hate her.
