Work Text:
"I'm back babe!" you called out as you close the front door and throw your keys in the bowl beside it. It was Sunday afternoon and you'd just come back from running some errands. Your girlfriend Miranda had stayed at home as she was waiting for a work call, a little unusual for a weekend but Miranda's career as a police officer never seemed to take a day off. She'd been working a lot lately so even to have her home right now was a blessing.
She didn't respond when you called out to her but you could see her. She was pacing around the back garden smoking a cigarette, something she only did when she was really stressed. You went outside but startled her when you said her name again, clearly she had been lost in a world of her own.
"I take it the work call didn't go well then?" you presumed, taking the cigarette from her and having a cheeky puff on it yourself. She shook her head in response and her eyes suddenly filled up with tears.
"Robin can be so bloody horrible sometimes!" she said as she burst out crying. You immediately stubbed out the cigarette and threw your arms around her.
"Oh baby it's okay".
You rubbed her back and let her cry into your shoulder as she held onto you tightly. When she broke away you let her rant for fifteen minutes straight, she was angry and upset so she obviously needed to get it all off her chest (even if you didn't quite know what or who she was talking about).
"I'm sorry love, I'm just so-"
You cut her off and held her face, "don't be sorry. Just let it all out".
In a pathetic attempt to let out some more anger she growled in frustration and kicked over a garden gnome.
"Hey! Don't kick Gerald! He's my favourite!"
Miranda giggled through her tears and your insides warmed at seeing her cute little smile again.
"I think I know what will cheer you up" you said as a plan started to formulate in your head.
"What?" Miranda asked curiously as she wiped her face.
"Go upstairs and don't come back down until I tell you to" you instructed.
"Okay" she trudged inside and you quickly followed.
"I mean it Miranda, no peeking!"
"Ok ok I promise!"
As soon as Miranda disappeared upstairs you put your plans into action. The first thing you did was hang the double hammock across your porch overlooking the back garden. Usually this was a two person job but after a few failed attempts and frustrated growls you managed to do it solo.
You collected some cushions and a crochet blanket to make the hammock more comfortable and warm.
The sun was starting to set so you turned on the fairy lights illuminating the space with a cosy golden glow against the dusky sky. It was perfect.
You went into the kitchen and gathered some snacks, mostly Miranda's favourites to cheer her up.
You dragged a small table over to the hammock and cookies, crisps, sweets and drinks spilled from your arms.
The final piece of the puzzle was your laptop, luckily it was fully charged so the two of you could watch a movie. You placed it on the table and stood back to admire your efforts.
"She'll love this" you thought then went upstairs to fetch Miranda.
You found your girlfriend sitting on the bed with her legs crossed, twiddling her thumbs. Her face lit up as soon as you entered the room.
"If you'd like to accompany me downstairs madam, I have a surprise for you" you said in an overly-formal tone.
Miranda excitedly scrambled off the bed and took the hand you had extended to her.
You led her downstairs and out onto the porch. On the way you heard her gasp with delight at the romantic scene you had laid out for her.
"Oh y/n, this is beautiful!" she exclaimed.
"I thought we could snuggle up on the hammock and watch a movie together under the stars" you said.
"Oh that sounds lovely!" she said, "um...you may have to give me a hand getting up on the hammock. I don't want to fall out like last time".
You sniggered recalling the incident where Miranda hopped onto the hammock but rolled straight off it and landed on her face.
"It wasn't funny!" she protested but you could tell she was dying to laugh too.
"It was from where I was standing!"
She playfully smacked your arm and started giggling.
You helped your tall girlfriend onto the hammock and, thankfully, this time she managed to stay on. You climbed on too and cuddled up, leaning back on the pillows and pulling up the crochet blanket. She let out a hum of content as she wrapped her arm around your front and nuzzled into your neck.
"What snack would you like?" you asked her.
"Hmm this one" she said lightly and nibbled your earlobe.
"Stop it you, plenty of time for that later" you said giggling.
"Fiiiiine. I'll have some Jelly Babies please".
You passed her the yellow bag filled with her favourite sweets, you went for the tube of ready salted Pringles and popped the lid.
"Are you going to be crunching all the way through the film?" Miranda joked.
You took out a single crisp and looked at her directly, crunching it as loud as you possibly could. Miranda rolled her eyes and laughed at your teasing.
After browsing the menus of the different streaming services you had you both chosen to watch Stardust. It wasn't a great film in your opinion but it was one of Miranda's favourites so you were more than happy to see it again if it made her smile.
As you both watched she quoted some of her favourite lines, laughed and gasped at all the usual parts and gushed over Michelle Pfeiffer (you gathered she had a bit of a crush on her).
Towards the end of the film you noticed Miranda was very quiet. You looked over and saw that she was fast asleep. You turned off your laptop and gently placed it on the table. You put down your tube and carefully took the bag of Jelly Babies from her.
You brushed away some stray pieces of hair from her face then watched her sleep for a few minutes, snoring softly. The muscles in her face were now completely relaxed, highlighting her delicate features.
Despite the stress and pressure she was constantly under from her job she was still so passionate about it and genuinely cared about helping people and seeking justice. You were so damn proud of her.
You leaned in and kissed her cheek, whispering "I love you Miri" before snuggling into her and letting sleep take you too.
